Many don't you understand how good Oscar Schmidt was. He would have scorched the NBA in any era. Forget about his defense. His offense more than made up any flaws he had. He scored 46 against USA in Indianapolis. In Europe he was a legend. My take is he easily would have averaged 27 to 30.

He said he had to be careful not to defend hard on defence because he had to not foul out and to play all the minutes for his team.

In an alternate universe, we talk about how Oscar Schmitt was a revolutionary scorer, and have low-quality video of Dirk Nowitzki torching the German basketball league with his volume scoring, stretching the floor with his 3's as a big, all while being nearly incapable of staying in front of ball-handlers.

Oscar was the Romário of basketball when it came to skill and scoring. Just give him the ball and it's over. But they also won't do anything else nearly as good. They both also had really long careers and lead the score on goals/points plus they also shunned major leagues and preferred to play whatever made them most comfortable, critics be damned.

I guess a good glimpse on how fluid and well suceed his game woud be in the NBA was his performance in Atlanta, against the dream-team, and before that, beating David Robinson's olympic US team. This particular game was the main reason to the US petitioning for allowing pros there. Acctualy Schmidt was the top male scorer on both years and the ALL time history of the Olimpics. Believe me He would be retired as one of the NBA all time scorers. His first year ratings would allow him to contract a top team such as Jabbar and Jhonson's Lakers, gaining some more titles from Boston Celtics. His defense would be naturaly developed in the fierce enviroment of the 80's league, based almost entirely on post game and infiltration. It would be easer for him to attack It cause the threes where out of sitght of all american coaches at that time. It would take a couple of years for them to understand the importance of definely adapting their defences. You must also consider the spanish league where Schmit has played was never an easy task. And He did It, there and also in Italy. Your hypotesis of lower rates in the NBA is wrong. He was very much interested in playing for the Nets but at that time It would avoid him playing for his national team. Off course his patriotic ideal is not well compreended nowadays where money and fame -- at least for Brazilian players specially in soccer-- are all that matters. I had only dought about Curry's ratings in comparison but you have just answered It. Nobody untill now surpass Oscar Shmidt on shooting. The precision of such a tall guy would forced the ecxactly changes that happened just the last decades, with higher amount of threes been taking in count. I'm very sure Oscar Schmidt and the young prime Avdas Sabonis where the best "what If" alien players that would be as great insiste US. I'm Brazilian and played as an amateur for many years and Im deeply sorrow for his wrong choice. Our national team, ruled by political not thecnical criteria, was never more important than his personal carreer. He would be regonized as a national citzen anyway. This is so true that ALL the next brazilian teams, full of old tarts and wrong pics, avoinding youngster talents, lost just everything since then.

Perfeita análise ! Ele só não jogou na NBA, porque naquela época (1984) quem jogasse na NBA não poderia jogar também por sua Seleção Nacional.

Seen him playing on TV during the 80’s olympics, I never forgot that name. He would have definitely made the NBA on close games he would be the one taking the last WINNING shot. Regarding his defense if he played in the NBA. I think he would have elevated his defense and played a little harder on defense . But at that time in the NBA it was more physical players were getting busted up , black eyes stitched up faces. Oscar would have at best just been an average defender, just from his yrs at Brazil he was never physical would have been interesting to see how he would have played in the NBA but will never know.

Oscar did what Curry later did (at the shooter level) 30 years before, ahead of his time, incredible because in those years, although the triple was used, the way Oscar used it was out of that era. I think that also In those years where the players did not rotate as much as they do today and played many minutes (+35) it was common to think that the team's scorer should focus more on attacking than wearing out on defense. If we look at games (FIBA) from those years, generally the defenses were lighter, I believe in Oscar's word, something like "if the ball and the hoop are the same I won't have problems."

Given that he was the primary offensive option for his team-and often the only credible option-it's difficult to judge his defense. He couldn't risk fouling out, for one, and also needed to conserve his energy, something Lebron has shown during his career. That noted, his lateral movement looks slow on video, so I doubt he could ever be a better than passable defender.

Saying that he would be scoring in "the low 30s" is completely insane, there's no evidence to back that up. He wasn't better than Petrovik. Also pretty unprofessional to not even mention that the NBA 3 point line is further away from the basket.
