Football always has been peoples game. One of the main reasons people enjoy it or wants to peruse a career in football is because of the accessibility. Now if my local club made it to the champions league knock out stages I would be delighted to travel else where in Europe to watch the match. Per say now the matches are held in the states or China from now on then it will become a competition that only becomes available to the wealthy. They have the World Cup and other international tournaments which they are on the process of working on which has that appeal already. I do understand it’s not just my local areas club as it has become more global and don’t want to take anything away from that but I feel like that abroad many of the supporters tend to support bigger clubs and have a lesser of appeal to other less known ones. So I would think it’s much easier for the competition to be held in Europe. Not to mention how problematic it would be from a footballers perspective. They already have cramped schedules and having to travel long distances just to play matches in the middle of the week doesn’t sound healthy.

It's important to remember that many US sports are franchise based, and as such their owners are more than happy to move location if they get a better offer from another city. In understanding this, it is easier to see why NFL/NBA can more easily play regular season games outside of the US. Football is not, at least in Europe, franchise based. Therefore leagues and clubs take on flavours and distinctiveness of their location. This will attract different international supporters to different clubs, and also makes it harder to travel with the sport. As an Australian that madly follows an Italian Serie A team, I am horrified at the thought of my team playing a regular season game outside of Italy/Europe. The atmosphere just would not be there.

Football clubs are representitives of their local community, not the globe, and while fans from Asia, the Middle East, North America etc. are very welcome to support european clubs they should be the last consideration on where these clubs play and have no right to see them live at all. European football has been built by local fans over the last 140+ years and is the most successful clubs wouldn't be around without their local communities so why should clubs like Arsenal put American, Chinese or Arabian intrests before local fans? If they want to watch these clubs they should either travell to the country of the team in question. The 2018 Copa Libertadores final was moved from Buenos Aries to Madrid and that was wrong, fans shouldn't have to pay thousands of pounds or euros travelling to watch their clubs play on another continent and if they want to open into new markets they should reform global competitions such as the Club World Cup, invest in grassroots football in these countries and develop their domestic leagues by affiliating with local clubs instead of relying continental competitions like the Champions League to boost revenue and attract new fans.

It means that Chinese fans wake up at 4am, Thai fans at 3am and Indonesian at a mix of the 2. Japanese fans wake up at 5am and Indian fans need to not sleep till 1.30 am. There is no one correct time to start matches, perhaps the clubs can decide that they want to maybe have a match which would be helpful to the Chinese audience, or one that is okay for Indian audience. Maybe that would be better than moving matches to China or India. The prices for the tickets will be jacked up and the only people who could attend would be middle aged execs and vip ticket holders from completions, not organic fans.

I live in a different country to to club I support (a Manchester United fan from Ireland), and honestly I don't want these types of changes. It seems almost disrespectful to the other contingents answers to the champions league. I love learning about Manchester, and making it feel like a second home.

He says Champions League needs to evolve, but why? It's the most famous club tournament, and is massively lucrative. Saying it needs to evolve is just greedy. You could say the Club World Cup or the European Supercup need to evolve, but definitely not the Champions League. That's just greed and other personal interests talking
@leemc5646 Жыл бұрын
They've already messed with it over the last 30 years, from it being the European cup to the rebranded Champions League from League winners only being entered to the top 3/4 teams in each league being entered. The money men will never stop they want more.
@futurehistory2110 Жыл бұрын
I hope they keep it as it is, especially the format. Also as a fan of the League of Ireland, while unlikely, it's nice to hang on to the dream that some day an Irish team will make it to the group stages and I'm sure there are many similar leagues across Europe where fans that want dream to hold on to - that maybe we'll see our team make it to the group stages at least once in our lifetime. But removing that entirely would be fairly bleak.

If big clubs start playing home games outside Europe then they should be taxed millions every time they do and that money should go to all the local businesses that have missed out on business because of the clubs financial greed. Football clubs are not just businesses, they are part of the community and a big part of local economic security. We need to be raising the standards of football clubs and competitions outside of Europe not using them as feeder clubs for European teams.
@Rybo4 Жыл бұрын
This is how money ruins football. The idea that clubs are franchises. It's fine for fans to be global, but clubs are about the community more than global fans. It isn't about growth and revenue. It's about identity.

The question is - why. The reason that the CL is so revered is because it is an elite European competition. The second that is diluted, it becomes something else. The comparison in this is "compare it to the NFL". The difference is, nobody else plays American football, it is a completely different culture, why all of a sudden does every consultant want to follow an American model when they already have the most popular global product the planet has ever seen?

I would love to see champions league outside of europe. but the fact that club play in their league, domestic cups, and european football means it just don't make sense for players to travel long distance. NFL and NBA season is not that long and jam packed. heck, NFL is less than 20 fixtures outside of playoff.

I can see it happening, even if I don't like it. IT's the European Cup, other confederation's cup competitions aren't played outside of their continent (the 2018 Copa Libertadoes final excluded, due to unforseen circumstances). That said, this is modern football, and money is always the big joker. Without question, there are countries willing to throw absolutely sinful amounts of money at UEFA to hold the CL final in their country. After Qatar 2022, it'd be naive, at best, to think that the people in power wouldn't follow the money and host the Champions League Final wherever they think they can make the most money.

Of course me being someone from Australia I’d love to watch my team in a UCL final. Especially considering coming to Europe and trying to watch a one off game proves to be very expensive without a membership. But it doesn’t seem right watching my team without the devoted supporters who are alwasy at the games The only way I can see this working is having it solely for one off games like a UCL final but they’d have to provide significant subsidies for local fans who deserve to be at those games just as much as fans from other countries do

So much of this video is hearing talk of markets and finances, rather than the sport itself. TIFO are right to point to these issues, but it's so telling. What is the point in being called, say, Manchester City if the games are played in Dubai? Certainly I could see the argument for a neutral venue for the final, but at any other time it seems absurd that we're discussing playing games away from where a team is based. We've already accepted that players, managers and staff can come from outside the local area because, in theory, that improves fan experiences by providing better football. But it's also driven up ticket prices in some cases, to the point where a season ticket is the largest single purchase many fans will make in a year. And now we're hearing senior execs saying it's "arrogant" for local fans to have priority over seeing their team play live? The amount of money flowing through the Champions League right now is massively damaging to the competitiveness of the top leagues and keeps certain clubs always above a certain level and, functionally, too big to ever drop while smaller clubs fail or get stuck in a huge financial hole when they fall out of the CL after a brief spell in it (Leeds, Leicester etc). This will only cause further issues for fans.

I never watch the italian or spanish cup finals that often anymore, simply due to the fact that the atmosphere is just not the same. I would much rather watch the dutch cup final played in the netherlands than watch a boring final played in another country. UEFA will soon enough realise this. Football is all about fans, atmosphere and identity. People recognise this. They can keep trying to squeeze the game for what its worth in money, but us the fans will always follow where passion is.
