What about a FIFA Intercontinental Cup (An Europa League imitation)? This would give chances of glory to the smaller nations and would be great for countries that have one or two players who are world class but don't make it to World Cups like Egypt. It would also reveal whether FIFA just want more money or actually want to give smaller nations chances.

@micayahritchie71583 жыл бұрын
I completely understand your perspective but developed European countries always get the best players with dual nationalities because many times playing for the place they actually feel more a part of makes no economic sense and provides no opportunity to actually make the tournament. If the Irish complain so much about the English poaching Irish talent imagine me as a Jamaican when sterling plays for England despite constantly being in and around Jamaicans and when Leon Bailey didn't declare for us at first because he was seeing if he was eligible for English citizenship. This is just the reality that with low funding compared to the European giants and a migrating population pool. Already small already poor countries simply can't compete when most of the revenue in football as a whole goes to Europe and the scarcity of the tournament means that people don't want to play for a country with low probability of ever making it and are far more willing to back themselves to get into a squad that will make it.
@micayahritchie71583 жыл бұрын
I don't think the tournament should be expanded that's just greed. That's solely to get more games and it does drop the quality of the competition but. If it happened every 2 years it would drop the prestige so much. Arsene is right about the rest needed, there should be a mandatory summer break, mandatory winter break and X weeks devoted to international competition. If they want more revenue they should run one-off invitational tournaments with varying formats. A FIFA [Insert City Here] Trophy would still sell, still boost local tourism and the rotation of teams could see fresh match ups.
@philth893 жыл бұрын
The only way this can make any sense to me, and that's being generous, is if all continental national tournaments (euros, Asian cup etc) are scrapped all together in addition to friendlies. The game would get better in CONCACAF and maybe with double the chances of getting to the world cup Jamaicans in England would actually want to play for Jamaica rather than wait until they're 32 and have given up hope of playing for England because 1 there would be more money in it for them and 2 there would be more chances to actually qualify and make a name for themselves. I would prefer one of fifa’s ideas of whacking the confederations cup and doing a proper club World Cup (not too many teams maybe just the winners of each continental like CL and Europa league winners would go) in that free summer which can be compelling and have the full squads (brings in more money for fifa and keeps the World Cup as is), players need breaks Alexis Sanchez basically had no break for several straight years and not so shockingly his form dropped off a cliff, gotta give them at least one free summer and you don’t want to draw attention away from the Women’s World Cup who might also then want more too then what do you do? Also Conmebol qualifying takes forever due to playing everyone twice so I just don’t see this working without giant shifts that result in some mess that will have players burning out
@Iennda3 жыл бұрын
I am hundred percent behind the argument that it would make the World Cup less interesting and appealing. So in the long run, it might end up costing FIFA money, because less people would watch it. Yes, it is unfortunate that some players might have their best years in between World Cups and will never win this trophy - but if they do, they will definitely consider it way more valuable, if there is only one every four years.

@Kimera7943 жыл бұрын
There's one thing this video doesn't mention about this proposition, which is... corruption. The FIFA handouts are rarely reinvested in football, the confederations supporting Wenger's plan are marred with shedloads of corruption (more than UEFA by far, if you were wondering) and the FAs strongly supporting this plan are just doing business/politics with Infantino. After all, the guy has become so powerful to become the first FIFA president to attend a G20. You would need him on your side in case you get caught in corruption/criminal stuff. Especially if you are an influential FA in your respective confederation (hence why one would hear about stuff happening in Haiti, Chad and Pakistan... but not about stuff related to France's FA, for example).

Scrapping friendlies, having an actual real international schedule, providing funding for the development of the sport globally, having enforced rest periods for players and many other aspects of this would probably be the most beneficial changes to the sport in decades yet I'm supposed to care about some abstract notion of "prestige". Yeah no thanks, Wenger is a visionary and I say this as a Spurs fan
@sarahjessicafarter73833 жыл бұрын
Enforced rest periods for players - is that part of Wenger's proposals? Then the extra funding for less wealthy global regions point is possibly a bit too hopeful. Saudi Arabia proposed this biennial world cup not Indonesia or Bangladesh. FIFA's other proposals such as an expanded club world cup seem to have been more about further milking Asian TV markets than raising money for, eg. the Senegalese FA. I'm far more cynical of this supposed "global development" narrative, personally. I see it more as a global neoliberal elite looking to further enrich themselves (here I mean the corporate interests partnered with FIFA rather than FIFA itself). A problem this video didn't go into much is that a biennial world cup would abolish the Euros and Copa America. These tournaments matter to European and South American fans. That CAF and the AFC have failed to engender comparable enthusiasm for their continental tournaments is their fault.
@konradvonschnitzeldorf65063 жыл бұрын
All this "developing football" money is just going to private pockets like all these years before. That's why FIFA can make the World Cup bigger and bigger, because the presidents of small little nations get a fat bag for siding with blatter and infantino and whatever they are called.

For instance, could have leagues and continental cups one year, international club leagues and World Cup the following year; so that there would be one club championship and one national team championship each year. For international club competitions every other year, every team could be placed with same place teams from the league standings of each nation the year before. In this players, club teams would play league games one year and international club leagues the following year, instead of playing both the same year; while there would be a major tournament for national teams every year, World Cup one year with Continental Cup the following year, to keep the top quality in soccer competition every year. Player load for club games would be more manageable; with audiences being treated to major national team tournament every year

There is a trend in football for players to need to play more and more games. We see this trend with the new Champions League format as well as these World Cup plans. Players that play in European club level competitions usually are also national players. So they get a break once every two years in the off season when there isn't an international tournemant. Fifa argues they could mitigate this by elimenating international friendlies and the Nations League but UEFA would almost certainly host the European Cup biannually as well in response. So instead of a bi annual break national players would have no off season break at all. One last point. UEFA are not the good guys in this. A large part of why this isn't feasable is because they keep increasing the number of games to generate more money disregarding the players health. In an isloated environment where club level football wasn't an issue I would be for this change. It gives players more opportunities for international success and makes it more likely for a national team to actually win twice in a row because those same players will still be in good shape two years later.

I agree with almost all points. Great football nations being more likely to win a world cup twice in a row isn't desirable.

If I was in charge I would get rid of the nations league and do the world cup every 3 years throughout the season instead of friendlies and keep everything else the same.

Joe... I want to hate you for the Scotland comments, but honestly, Euro 2021 was the first tournament I've seen Scotland at in my life, and it was so bad I think I'd be ok if we never made another.

What kind of monster leaves whisky for Santa? The man drinks brandy!

I think the right and best answer is that we should not go along with this and it’ll be better for 90% of those involved

Its gonna be both WC and Euros in a 3 year cycle, and then the 3rd year is a gap year. They may have planned it like that in the first place, and are just using 'this every 2 years'- as a way to sell it.
