Love how Finn brings players to the line, forces it by flat passes, you dont have a choice but to get over the gain line at pace. I haven't read all the comments and maybe someone touched upon this, but according to Jacques Nienaber (?) the Boks did indeed prepare for a Finn Russel scenario by asking Elton Jantjies to play his natural, seeing what's in front of him game during practises, exactly to test their D structures. Preparation, attention to detail Team Erasmus/Nienaber style.

Thats for sure some sort of preparation. But i think finn is on a higher level. No question they'd have been better with Russell or even Smith. Biggar and Farrell will at most give you a consistent 6 or 7. At the squad announcement they talked about wanting to play some rugby, move the ball, move the Boks and play out wide, hence why they picked the European Player of The year Sam Simmonds yet they played close quarter, 1 up rugby, playing off 9. If they are playing that they should had picked Billy V. Utter madness! They had no intention of playing, why didn't they take Ringrose or Slade if they wanted to play rugby? I genuinely think so. SA rush defence dominated mostly and Russell would have slowed them down and made them think. You don’t get that from Biggar, as good a player as he is - he is just a more structured 10. The gameplan was all wrong from the outset and I suspect was based around Biggar/Farrell at 10 in Gatlands mind from the get go. I felt we were only going to win if we played some fast/clever rugby - and there’s no one better than Russell at that. That kind of rugby is a risk. Russell is a risk taker. Gatland stuck to what he knows and paid for it, and not only that, he got the other backline selections wrong to match his gameplan.
@midnightmoses5803 жыл бұрын
The Lions might not have won if he'd played in all 3, I'm sure SA would have adapted their defence against him. It would have been entertaining to see how he adapted his game in response. So would he have made a difference for the whole series, absolutely. It not even a question. Everyone can see it now, but anyone with any knowledge of Finn Russell knew it beforehand. As good as Finn is, the problem was that the Boks dominated the forward battle. But for a forward pass and an offside in the first test, the Boks would have won 3-0. Too much has been made of the antics of Rassie but the Boks were just too good for this Lions team. By the third test it was practically England plus a few others and the England forwards were disappointing in the six nations and in their previous forward drubbing by SA. Itoje was good as ever but playing Lawes out of position was naive and Sinckler was average…maybe he had some biltong stuck in his throat after the previuos test match. As for the backs, Dan played well with the scraps he had to play with. It could be argued that, had the back three been better in the second test, it could have been better contested if the Lions had dealt with the high ball as they would have with Liam Williams at full back. Some great players didn’t get much test time if any, LTZ, Josh Adam’s, Josh Navidi to name but a few but the game plan for the lions was very conservative and in the backs Farrell was a big mistake. Sexton would’ve been a better option for the latter. But as much as the individuals picked, the game plan seemed to have no plan b. In some ways being let off the hook for not making possession count in the first test after the humiliation of losing to the A team led to a repeat performance in T2 &3. The Boks aren’t that daft. They are always prepared for the big games. Two good high points for me were the Cowan-Dickie and Ken Owens tries,. Not many teams breach the SA line in a brawn contest. Unfortunately, with all the flair in the squad on paper, very little was exhibited on the field of play. There was so little positive play from the Lions in the contact zone I almost expected to see Dean Richards appear from some of those mauls.

No, the BIL's really require NH referees that are selected to undeservedly gild NH rugby, by making clearly errant decisions at crucial moments of a test, or indeed series, to the benefit of the NH tourists. Sometimes this is not enough, as was witnessed by the drawn series that occurred in NZ, despite the clear departure from the laws as they are written, at those crucial moments but, with a continual stable of well heeled, understanding & compliant NH referees, this will eventually pay off in the long term and long suffering NH fans will devour this faecal ridden platter of false victory with cheers and applause, as though it were a feast fit for kings.

But the only game he started they didnt win, so what is the basis of saying if Russell started in all the games they would have won? They lost on Saturday.

Alot of woulder, coulder, shoulder..... You people lost!!! The game plan was dictated by the bokke situation, they have no seen each other in 2 years. Some have not even played for ages. If the boks had proper preparation we would have ripped you Lions a new 1.

What a useless question and a monumental waste of time. This is what separates the North hemisphere mindset from the southern. The North has been making excuses for its lack of performance for so long they like to play fantasy rugby. There must be an obvious reason as to why the Lions lost. Yes, your team was just not good enough. The end. Southern hemisphere nations don't tend to dwell. They don't ask what if. They move on quickly and improve.

Like the springboks did after the 1st test 🤣 No crying like a bunch of school girls and making videos about perceived injustices. Just staunchly and silently move on and improve like the springboks do.....

The best comment i read after the 1st test was from a saffa who in all seriousness was trying to convince people that there has been a conspiracy in motion since rugby was first played back in the 1800's, up til now so that England get most decisions in their favour, followed by new zealand and then i think it was ireland in 3rd and i cant remember after that. And the whole conspiracy was in place to try make sure that S.A didnt ever win anything. All that because his team managed to lose a game(and they were winning at half time) He clearly didnt watch a single minute of the crappy northern hemisphere six nations this year because england players were penalty machines this year-they literally couldnt stop themselves giving away pens

You're totally right, in fact, when DC left Racing they replaced him with Finn because he was "overrated". They're both world class 10s so it's not a surprise to compare them both. DC has won more than Finn. He also played in the best rugby team ever. Imagine if Finn played with that AB side? Wouldn't be called "overrated" I'm sure. Finn also destroyed DC in one of his last games for Glasgow against Racing in another of his "one good games". But you know this, you just choose to ignore it. If you think this is the one time Finn has played to this level then you're a moron, sorry. (I'll be ignoring your daft reply so have at it, idiot.

@@zerootie spot on. Finn outplayed DC both in Paris and Glasgow and was one of the reasons Racing chose him as DCs replacement.

@@Mohamedali-xw1ep there was one lazy article that compared him to DC but to find it, you would have needed to be searching Finn's name.
