Have lived in the UAE 9 years. Hotels, Dubai SKi and Golfcourses are the biggest consumers. Sewage is just a small part of the needs. Massive desalination has been their method.

UAE also has some of the worlds top weather scientists working on cloud and storm manipulation. I think they're goal is by 2030 to be able to produce artificial rain clouds almost on demand and they seem to be on track. Vice has a great documentary about it.

Thank you for this great insight. I think it really trickled down at the end of the documentary to what makes sense in this region and what is done in favor of profit. Yet i wish the focus would lay even more on people like Will Bennet, since he seems to profoundly regard environmental aspects. I personally would have loved to learn about which kind of businesses he works with and have the native plants introduced more in detail. Let us learn more about what we can do for the environment and take people like him to be an example for others working in this region! thanks again.

When you read statistic of averange water consumption per person, in that number everything is calculated from road making to toilet paper making. We use water in every process and that number represent average consumption to live by standards of that specific place. For example when you eat 1 kg of beef you need to feed the cow for 3 years in that time it will eat 1,300 kilograms of grains and produce 200 kg of beef. Those grains require water to grow, the farm and slaughterhouse needs to be cleaned, the cow needs to drink - all of these adds up to 3,091,000 liters of water averange. That is 15,400 liters of water for ever 1 kg of beef you eat. Water that you drink and use for hygiene is the miniscule to other things that you use.

Take it from me as a citizen, a student in Pennsylvania in the past paying $120 a year! and now paying this amount every month here since desalination is used and costs a lot like California. It is impossible this region runs out of water, because they got oil that could cover them for the next 100 years, this will cover up desalination needs. California on the other hand is broke on oil (not owned by the gov, instead by ppl of land plots), that's why it is a serious problem over there. EDIT: the inventor of lithium batteries announced we are less than 10 years away from stronger lithium super batteries that would wipe our need for oil in many areas of life. But still, the GCC countries got enough oil left to cover the desalination plants for centuries. Second reason, the area is becoming greener these years, sudden snow, unusual rain level that causes floods out of nothing! Probably Europe will switch sides with the middle east and african desert areas in the next 100 years.

Water has been desalinated in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states for more than 50 years. How can this be related to Israel?

@@TawfiqElfakharani because israel has invented and innovated destilinaized processes, and is now a leading country in thouse fields,we dont have water problems anymore(and jordan and the Palestinian authorities are benefiting from this.

Can’t we just apply this rather novel way to solve the fresh water 💦 crisis? Sending millions of manned missions to Europa and Enceladus and such bodies in the solar system and harvest their water 💦 and then import it back to earth 🌍? There could be as much fresh water 💦 equal 🟰 to millions of ‘Lake Ontario’s.

Utter stupidity trying to make a desert into a golf course, in a few decades it is going to be a desert once again. This has been tried many times already and the result is always a desert that sucked millions of dollars that could have been spent much better...
