The question of the shword's weight has come up a few times since I made the video, and I weighed it today: 28.9 lbs. or 13.11 kg. That might sound lighter than you would otherwise expect. But if you know what it's like to swing a 2 lb. sword, imagine swinging 14 at once. In fact, it's more like swinging a stick that has a bag on the end with 14 swords in it. It gets tiring very quickly. Should I do a follow-up Shword made out of a molded, carbon fiber with razor sharp, thin blades and a metal pointy tip?

Next time you build one, I recommend looking for paulownia wood. This wood is nearly as light as balsa wood, but it's far sturdier. It's even used to build surfboards and small boats.
@foldionepapyrus34413 жыл бұрын
Yeah, some better material choices to help lighten and balance it would really help. Also got to decide which way to bias the design towards a more usable weapon or high protection as a shield - arrows will penetrate a great thickness of wood partway so you are never getting a practical shield section that won't get penetrated at all (even real thick small shields don't do that perfectly) - so perhaps thin down those sections more than a normal shield, its still going to rob the arrows of significant energy keeping you 'safe' while making the weapon elements more functional. Or even just have a few thin metal ribs spanning the hollow between the blades for rigidity and skin with a thin leather - will almost certainly not stop arrows much at all, but it looks like it might - which means they may choose not to waste arrows on you while you are prepared, and will still make a effective shield against melee weapons, while being far better balanced, with more sensible mass so a better weapon too..
@clothar233 жыл бұрын
@@foldionepapyrus3441 To be fair a more modern understanding of material science means we don't need to sacrifice all that much defensiveness to facilitate offensive abilities. Especially since more exotic woods would offer equal or better defenses at equal or lesser thinness and thus lower weight. And lightweight metallic reinforcements and raw hide covering would help.
@foldionepapyrus34413 жыл бұрын
@@clothar23 Yeah with modern material science the whole thing could be made light and tough enough quite easily. But sticking in the realms of pre-industrial fantasy it needs either magic to make up for the lack of material science or to accept some fairly considerable trade off in one role or other. The best possible good for both roles I can think of in an Iron age type setting would be to make the whole thing out of good steel, but very thin with contour and ribs to stiffen it - in effect the same as plate armour just a different shape to fill the role of Shword. Pre Iron age I'm thinking you might be best just building it as a wooden shield but making the rim in the same way many ancient cultures embedded flint/obsidian in wood to make mace, axe and sword, even if you have copper/bronze age tech (though if you have that tech the blade sections can of course be set into a metal rim, and perhaps are metal themselves)...
@clothar233 жыл бұрын
@@foldionepapyrus3441 Why would you make the shield portion entirely out of steel ? When Brazilian Ironwood or American Live Oak would offer adequate protection at a far reduced weight. Especially when reinforced with a metallic rim that can also become extensions of the blade itself. A modern understanding of material science doesn't always mean nanotube carbon fiber ya know.
@foldionepapyrus34413 жыл бұрын
@@clothar23 The entire thing in steel was with Iron age tech, not modern. And from what we have seen with Tod an freind's longbow (or lockdown longbow) testing relatively thin sheet steel of good quality will just shatter arrows taking no harm (though poor steel it seems is almost useless). No wood offers that level of protection, the joins between materials with iron age tech particularly are going to either make the weapon nearly impossible to repair which limits its usefulness significantly or prone to falling apart when hitting things with it, both rather undesirable. So as I believe the thin sheet steel approach will not be too heavy to fight effectively with, and may not even be heavier than wood - all down to the thickness of wood you end up using..

Technically, yes, but also no. Including a point would be a little hazardous for the weight. That reason is it's one of the densest metals on earth, equal sized steel blades would weigh about half what those tungsten blades do. Edit: don't know if it would be practical even with lighter steel blades, but it would definitely be more wieldly.

First time to this channel, I've watched this twice through now and can't decide if it's satire or not. Also can't figure out why this swordshield was made so rediculousely heavy. I feel like a highly functional sword shield could be made weighing around 7 or 8 pounds with the center of mass being very close to the center (or halfway along it's total length). I believe there is some potential to this idea, though if given an option to have a swordshield or a separate sword and shield, I would take the sperate sword and shield combo every time. Maybe a combined strapped shield punch dagger would be even more useful, could even try dual wielding them if they're small enough. Anyway, highly entertaining!

For the front handle, you should extend it to the hilt, and use a sliding mechanism like a greased copper tube around it to increase the ease of swinging it and the amount of force its capable of producing. For a relatively cheap counter weight for the pommel, you can use fishing lead wrapped in leather. Fishing lead weights are really cheap, and would provide ample counter weight.

Something like this: (search google on that 'cause my comment got deleted multiple times from inserting links LOL) Also, I like to say, I think this weapon should be more about the stabbing actions/techniques instead of the swinging/striking stuffs. A stabbing & parrying motions are simply way way more easier to manage than swinging a heavy long weapon that very hard to control on momentum.

The more I look at weapons like this, I think the best version of it (without super strength) would be to take the shape you have there, cut down the grip to be only a one-handed grip, put a vertical grip on the back side of it right above the hilt (so like a "T" grip in total), and then hack off the tip of it so that the "blade" is only about 2.5-3ft from the end of the hilt, only about as big as the "center" portion of your version. It would be a bit more like a fantasy battle-axe than like a "sword," and relatively blunt at the tip, so not a "stabbing" weapon, but I think it could be a very effective slashing weapon and also a reasonably effective buckler. It would be intended to be swung by holding the sword hilt in one hand, and the vertical mid-grip in the other, swinging it a bit like a chainsaw.
