Thank you Jonny and Simon! Any side by side videos instantly grab my attention. Particularly if it's a hammer gun. Always wonderful to see.

My goodness! I have the exact same gun. Mine has Damascus barrels that have been re-proofed for nitro 2 3/4" from black powder. These guns were made for them by The Midland Gun Co. who called this model 'The Sudden Death'. They always had fancy model titles. Good clay gun and I use mine and used to use it as a duck gun when I could use lead.
@jamesemson1529 Жыл бұрын
For duck hunting bismuth is very close to lead and old barrel safe. I use it in my dad's old (1965) superposed. We are only allowed 7 ducks a day so it's not very expensive
@michaelbaines1525 Жыл бұрын
I still use it from time to time and have used Tungsten Matrix to best effect. I bought a quantity some years ago before the huge price increase. Bismuth Alphamax cartridges too.

Beautiful shotgun.. I currently have three sxs hammer guns and love shooting them. One is a Purdey bar in wood one is a W. Richards and lastly a Francotte.

Should a beginner get or start with a side x side?
@ronaldpoppe37749 ай бұрын
@@stocks4bt if you are planning on shooting competition skeet or sporting clays I would recommend starting with an O/U. If you just shoot the ocational clays and like to hunt the SXS is a good traditional way to go. They are light weight and fast handling.

Very nice looking gun. Well done to Simon for winning the open! Good informative video as usual and much appreciated. I have an old Spanish (1967) SxS and love to shoot clays with it. I must say the hammer guns have a style of their own that can't be denied. Looking forward to another great vid. Cheers guys!

Magnificent no doubt. Johnny, and this Chanel is why I bought my Beretta 486. Also what made me start fowling again since I was a kid! Went on my 1st Pheasant, chuckar and Quail hunt last Season with two friends, and what a blast that was! Took your British advice in my loads too, they were using high brass 35 grams of #5, while I used a low brass 30 gram load of # 6's. ( I basically always prefer 6's) I had a half choke in the right barrel, and a 3/4 in the left.... what a memory that was, and some great pictures for the wall! Can't wait for this season! Thanks guys!!! -Va

I have been trying for years to get my Skeet shooting club to have a side x side shoot. I also shoot better with a SxS than an O/U (eyes) and will shoot all matches this coming season with my 1870 WR using 2-1/2" paper shells and 24 G loads of #8. Both barrels are cylinder bored BTW.

I have several sxs, apart from the pre wingnut AYA No2 my favorite is a E M Reilly 16g hammer gun. I think it was made about 1922 in Birmingham. Had been in the same family since new and well looked after. On a good day I can give my friends a hard time on the clay ground, them with their more modern guns. But I like its light weight and can stagger about for hours with it. Cost me £200 but replaced the firing pins as they were mushroomed, but was worth it. Loves Hull pro 16's 25gr. Love your videos!

Great video. That's a lovely gun,not to mention an exceptionally good buy! My Father still has his side by side hammer gun, and I shoot it regularly. It has had many thousands of rounds through it,many of them heavy loads. Does anyone remember the old Hymax and Alphamax cartridges? Thankfully, it is still as tight and crisp as it was in the 1960's and shoots like nothing else I've tried. I plan on taking it for some driven days this season. Best wishes to all involved with the channel, you are doing a fantastic job!

I had some three inch Alphamax from my father, No 1 shot. Shot a whitefronted goose on the Dyfi Estuary in 1971. I still have them. Dad bought them in 1947. great memory. We also had Hymax cartridges for foreshore shooting.

@jimandmarypowell9783 Thank you for your reply! We are also in Wales,near Brecon. My Father is originally from Ystradgynlais,and he used to regularly shoot foxes on the hills above Craig y Nos castle,and also on the Cnewr estate. His great friend was a shepherd there, and they enjoyed many,many days of hunting over the years. Very best wishes to you and your Family. Philip.

Love sxs shotguns. The mainstay of my collection.. Ive just bought a Husqvarna model 610 sxs... You should find 1 and try shooting one.. Lovely guns...i also have an army & navy sidelock ( P Webley & Sons London ) hammerless sidelock damascus non ejector. 2nd grade 27.5 " barrels..one cylinder choke one modified...straight grip and very tight...light...and bores are beautiful...shoot it often and with pyrodex loads and fiber wads its so fun!! I have also shot low prewsure smokeless loads on it..performed great for a gun made in 1893!

Interesting that a large open comp can be won by a man with an antique. Could be a theme for an open shoot, all guns to have come from the Holts bargain bucket buy it now sale for a nominal cost. Would be interesting to see old tat recycled for competition use.

Hammer guns are old relicks. 80's and 90's guns are the most cheap and reliable, period.

The Brits continued to make hammer guns longer than one would have expected because of George V's penchant for them and the resulting societal pressure on the wealthy gentry.
