Losing connection to the Light doesn't mean Arthas basically lost power though. His Deathknight spells are literally twisted versions of his Paladin spells. His healing spell that healed the living and damaged undead turned into Death Coil which damages the living and heals undead, his Divine Shield replaced with Sacrifice, his Devotion Aura which increases defense replaced with Unholy Aura that gives attack speed, and his resurrection spell replaced with a raise undead spell. Even though he has no connection to the light he has a concept of the spells which allows him to recreate a shadow version of them. Variann however has no concept of any kind of magic. The Lich King needed his champion to be the most suitable Deathknight, which is a magic-melee hybrid class. Variann could not utilize magic well enough.

exactly! That's also the reason why pure spellcasters aren't fit to become DKs/Lich King, so Jaina and Kael'Thas are both out of the window. I personally think that Illidan would have made quite the powerful Lich King too. It'd be like with Arthas, but he'd also be flying and he might actually have a good chance of keeping his mind and suppress Ner'Zhul's mind.

Yep... the issue with Illidan is he is uncontrollable. Ner'Zhul needed his champion to be both a suitable Deathknight and to be controllable enough for him to stay in control when they merge so the champion becomes the Lich King's vessel. Also considering that Demon Hunters literally consume a demon soul and dominate it means trying to merge with a Demon Hunter is crippling at best, suicide at worst. Bolvar also screwed Ner'Zhul over hard by having a strong enough will to resist, not having Frostmourne for additional control, and his body is in a terrible condition constantly burning from the dragon fire. Also apparently the High Lord did take Ner'Zhul's soul out entirely when making the Frost artifact weapons.

That's why I see this possibility(Lich King Illidan) as more of a choice by Illidan rather than one by Ner'Zhul. Imagine Illidan confronting Arthas before he reached Icecrown rather than at Icecrown, then Illidan and his forces defeating Arthas. Then, Illidan taking Frostmourne and Ner'Zhul's armor. Regardless of how it might occur, I just think that Illidan taking Ner'Zhul's stuff and his powers for himself in order to fight the Legion would fit Illidan's character, and it would also give him control over the scourge. At that point, Illidan would likely make the scourge stop attacking Azeroth's people and instead have them go to Northren to them open a portal and bring them with him as his army.

The light doesn't necessarily fade if you do something evil. The light is called by faith and willpower not necessarily good intent. The reason the light abandoned Arthas is because he lost faith and was doubting himself, if he was completely certain that what he was doing was right and had complete faith in his mission then the light would have obeyed him.

technically Arthas lost to us cus of Plot Armor. he had to die for game continuity. Tirion barely defeated Arthas in LHC but miraculously he *survived* the Fury of Frostmourne that killed every1 on the Frozen Throne platform, and then miraculously he broke free from the ice and then again miraculously he broken Frostmourne in 2. This is what plot armor looks like. if things were to run normally Arthas would have killed all of us and have raised us as Undead.

He lost due to plot, he was basically the strongest mortal. I mean he was specifically chosen by ner'zhul for a reason. He saw more potential in him than any one on this list. We had to weaken him so much, not only that but when he threw out his heart to grow more in power, it was destroyed by us which significantly weakens him. Like by a shit ton. He threw it out bc it made him weak and in time he would grow in powrr much much faster l. However we didn't give him enough time for that to happen. Kind of wack that this random "light" killed him.

It were cool to see Illidan as Lich King, he could resist Ner zhul, he had nagas blood elves draenai, many artifact powers, his age and his willing to defeat the Legion, but i think if he would manage to destroy the Legion, the next big threat Old Gods would corrupted him and use him to anihilate Azeroth and bring back the Black Empire. You forget that it's a rather common trope/idea that the higher you are, the harder the fall. Which in our situation usually transitions into champions of the Light becoming much more powerful when they fall into darkness. The best example of such is D&D, a Paladin that falls and becomes a Blackguard (his Evil opposite) gains extra powers compared to any other class or even someone that starts as a Blackguard.

I really like to think on the idea that Arthas never has been an undead in the first place, at least i don't remember "instantly turn into a undead" in the Lich King contract, so he can be revived like Sylvanas into a undead, maybe with the help of his boy Kel'Thusad (I don't know wath happens with his ashe's urn anyway), Arthas can become once more the Lich King that I once respected.

"harm" is a strong term buddy. and honestly, that's more down to the axe of cenarius than it is to him. there are PLENTY of people in wow who could take on hordes of demons alone. and that's just the people who DON'T use magic. put khadgar or jaina or malfurion and watch those demons fucking melt as they rain fire and brimstone on them. for the physical warriors who could do it--basically most named characters. varian, if he was primed and didn't have to take down a fucking boss beforehand could easily end up on a pile of demons--also they didn't have the budget to animate him fighting for hours, plus gul-fucking-dan was there, garuntee you alexandros, tyrion, and darion could all do it--maybe renault too, muradin, grommash, garrosh, the list goes on. taking down a ton of trash and then scratching a god doesn't make you amazing in this type of world lol. plus broxigar is one of the most overrated, poorly written characters i've seen in a while.

Actually, Azshara got less powerful after becoming a naga, for the simple fact that she lost the Well of Eternity as a power source. She was basically bathing in the stuff until it was destroyed. Sure, she got N'Zoth as a new one, but having N'Zoth as your booster is nothing compared to having Azeroths essence as your booster. The idea that she got more powerful is such outdated lore, Azeroth wasnt even a titan in the lore back then.

A little history and major hint. The Son of a Wolf / Year of the Dog (Varian/Anduin and Others) and the Son of the Dragon / Year of the Dragon (Arthas/Bolvar/BolvarsSecretSon) were once brothers in arms that fought side by side with each other for a greater cause and a greater good. A pact was made when they were kids if one of them were to fall the other would take his place and secure and take care who was left of either side of the family. A simple straight forward family pact.

I think Arthas was the perfect choice to become the lich king, heres why; Why use a paladin to make a death knight? Well I, and I'm pretty sure everyone, consider Paladin and Death Knight to be different sides of the same coin. Theres plenty of real life instances of opposing professions requiring, or at least being able to make use of, the same skill set. If a doctor decided to start killing patients they are often effective at doing so. Companies used to hire hackers as cyber security because the skills of finding a weakness in a system can be used to isolate the problem and fix it instead of just to exploit it. The skills that a cop would use to find evidence would be nearly equally useful to them if they wanted to commit a crime and reduce the amount of evidence they leave. In real life many people leave their religion because something broke their faith in their god, or whatever the religion was about, and often become very critical against, and sometimes outright opposed to, the religion afterwards. The same could easily be argued for being a paladin of the holy light converting to a death knight, swapping out their paladin spells for their evil counterparts. And OH BOY as far as paladins go.... Arthas had exactly what you need cause it had to be someone that was susceptible to being manipulated. Uther was to old and wise but Arthas was 24 and had his youthful inexperience and pride. He was strong both physically and with the light, as a knight of the silver hand he was probably one of the most powerful paladins around. Add to this that he was also the heir to the throne. He had to try to balance being a prince and a paladin, what is best for the country is not always what is the most just thing (purging of Strathholme). His faith, skill both martial and holy, along with the weight of conflicting responsibilities that would occur with situation he was thrust into created perfect conditions for a catastrophic fall from grace. He bore a great amount of responsibility on his shoulders and after getting his selfish revenge he said fuck that shit. The higher you are the farther you can fall and Arthas had a long way down.

Frostmourne is not primarily a melee weapon tho. First of all, it gives a lot of magical powers to its user. Necromancery is a complex form of magic, and yet Arthas (simple warrior, since we don't count his paladin skills) could use it better than any necromancer alive (or not really alive, lol). Just with pure might of Frostmourne. Using it as a sword is surely efficient, but it's not how it even was meant to be used. Jaina, Kaelthas and Illidaddy are unmatchable geniuses, when it comes to magic. With things they would be able to do, even considering to use Frostmourne as a melee weapon would be a joke... Also, Icecrown Citadel would be harder than mythic Antorus.

Arthas lost the light in Stratholme because he lost faith in the light and himself. You basically only need faith in order for the light to answer your call, not a just cause. Look at the Scarlet Crusade as an example :)

I'd argue that the knowledge and experience in channeling the light would translate fairly well into controlling death magic, with them being (thematic) opposites. It's at least a fairly common trope that powerful Paladins become the strongest Blackguards.

You are forgetting one essential thing, wielding magic is not something anyone can do and comes naturally to anyone in Warcraft lore, some people like Varian have no inherent magical abilities, and therefore has no experience wielding it. Neither Light nor Dark(shadow). Arthas had a lot of experience wielding the Light and even though it is completely opposite forces of Magic/Creation, they are still more similar. Pretty much all of the most powerful Death Knights we see are also former Paladins, I think this is due to the fact that Light and Darkness are more similar in WoW lore than we think. If you think about it, there is probably a reason as to why it comes so natural for Priests to be able to use both Light and Shadow magic. I think a the one who would make the most powerful Lich King, would have been either Tirion Fording or Anduin Wrynn. Btw, one thing that confirms my theory in lore is that Arthas grew with the powers of Darkness exponentially quick, being able to command entire Armies of the undead within a few weeks, even an entire continent away form the Lich King, he also slew pretty much every major powerful Character in Northern Eastern Kingdom with Ease. Sylvanas, Antonidas, The entire leadership of the Silver Hand and King Sunstrider.

Taking blow after blow just from Frostmourne, just by keeping up her Frost Shield and Arthas did not hold back, he wanted to kill her even more than Sylvanas because I wanted Jaina at his side again. Had Jaina become the Lich Queen, then she would probably have been the most powerful Necromancer in Existence.

Its funny this is mentioned. We know most of WoW's class design started off with the ideas of the D&D classes (and by extension, chainmail for those who remember), but specifically when you make a Blackguard (more or less the wow equivalent of a death knight with a few extra things), paladins are stronger then non paladins and even get unique powers because of it. I seem to recall one such entry for that class saying something along the lines of "their dark gods relish in the sight of a once great hero falling, and reward them for it."... or something along those lines.

Филипп М , you are correct about that, but I was referring to knowledge rather than power. Both are/were orcish shamans, therefore both have a similar way of thinking and acting. Ner’zhul would benefit from assimilating someone with a different background. A fallen Human Prince-Paladin is a good addition due to different knowledge and skills, plus how the former goodness and loyalty Arthas had for Lordaeron, his friends and family, and so on, empowered him even more once those feelings were corrupted. Ner’zhul too became more powerful after his fall when his former goodness and nobility were twisted and he became the monstrous creature we all know and hate.

Lich Queen Jaina wouldn't _need_ melee skills when she encases the whole world in ice. Her already incredibly frost magic further magnified by FROSTmoune armies of the Alliance and Horde would freeze to death long before reaching Icecrown. She would unite the world in death not through plague or necrotic power, but through a cold, cold embrace of ice. You said multiple times how the base powers of a potential candidate could factor into the strength of a new Lich King, Jaina's would bring nothing but benefit and magnify each other's powers off the charts.

Plasma, Medivh and Antonidas? How so? Medivh would never ever fall for Sargeras’ or Ner’zhul’s influence a second time, specially with the resurrection thing and such. And Lord Antonidas has as much merit as Kel’thuzad had. They are extremely powerful, clever and cunning geniuses, but neither are the militaristic type that could lead a army to war. For as much experienced as they both were, and noting Lord Antonidas’ leadership during the Siege of Dalaran, they are more fit for a secondary position instead of being the “greater commander” as King Terenas, Uther or Jaina herself were more qualified to be.

Ner'Zhul seemingly intended to develop the DeathKnight further. The first generation was just mounted spellcasters. With Arthas he have combined the mounted spellcaster with the Alliance's extremely effective Paladins, making heavy knights armed with death magic. The third generation that we got in WotLK is the combination of the Shan'lain's vampire shenanigans, the second gen's blight and necromancy related stuff, and the liches' frost magic. Ner'Zhul needed a paladin specifically to he his champion. Also Kil'jaden would not have been as much of a FUCKING BEAST in combat as a character with experience of BOTH being a heavy knight and handling magical powers.

It's good to see/hear someone well informed about Arthas history; you mention some details that are quite hidden ;) - Varian could have been a better lich king " melee warrior" but I don't think he would suffice for the necromancy and dark magic... the opposite goes for Kael'thas, may be a very powerful sorcerer but lacking the physical abilities for close combat; in that fight with Arthas, Kael'thas had to back off when he was coming close.... Illidan however, it makes me think that he could have been as powerful (or even more) than Arthas. (a bit off-topic) Correct if I'm wrong - Ner'zhul never fully controlled Arthas; he took a big role driving him to madness but at the end it was Actually Arthas the one that banished him and took full mantle of the Lich King.

Strength in the Light was related to strength in "Unholy" necromatic power. Its one of the reasons why the original Deathknights from Warcraft 2 were made from Paladins. When Kael'thas went against Arthas over Jaina, he didn't have access to Fel Magic at that time. While Illidain may have had a couple centuries at best in combat experience, 11k of his life was spent imprisoned. As far as I know, there isn't much precedent for Deathknights being made from caster types, mainly fighters. The first generation Death Knights had the minds/souls of warlocks/necromancers but the bodies of Paladins, which kinda made them physically frail compared to the later generation DeathKnights but they were definitely more potent with their magical abilities. Edit: So Warcraft 2 DKs were made from fallen 'Knights', not specifically Paladins.

There are two who would make for the most absolutely devastating Lich King in terms of melee combat, thought it has no chance to actually come to pass: Broxigar or Varok Saurfang. Broxigar would probably mean the end of Azeroth entirely, seeing as how he managed to land a blow on Sargeras himself with just a wooden axe as a mortal (granted the wooden axe was powerful, but not nearly as powerful as Frostmourne). And Varok would be a big contender, with icy cleaves and being one of the best melee combatants still alive today. The drawbacks of them both would be having next to no magical ability, though perhaps the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne itself would be able to grant them some.

While Arthas would have had to give up his connection to the Light to gain another source of power, something missing here is that his fighting style would have been based upon reliance on non-physical attacks and abilities before becoming a Death Knight. So while a source of non-physical power would have been exchanged, his fighting capability as a Death Knight would be extremely high from very early on since he had already been fighting in a similar style for years. Someone like Varian would be amazing with melee, yes, but not very refined with adding magic into the mix (though he would have the potential after many years of practice)

If Jaina became the Lich Queen, even though she would lack severely in melee skills, she would be nigh-on impossible to kill (in my opinion!). Not only would her frost spells be amplified beyond measure, but she would be able to do some very interesting things. For example, she could hide behind an army of ghouls, skeletons, frost wyrms, abominations, gargoyles, crypt fiends and the like, as well as hiding behind an ocean (no pun intended) of water elementals and frost elementals. At the same time she would be able to keep a heavy blizzard/snowstorm going to make her enemies' field of vision damn near nonexistent. And on top of all that, while that was going on if somehow, someway, somebody managed to get through all her defenses and get to her, she wouldn't need melee necessarily. She could keep herself shielded probably 24/7 with her frost shield and maybe even a mana shield, depending on whether or not she'd kept that particular spell in her arsenal when she converted. She'd be able to frost nova anything that gets too close. She would be able to surround herself with frost orbs to protect her. And if shit really hits the fan she could encase herself in ice for protection until her minions and elementals arrive. I guess one could kill her if they drained all her mana and then got within melee distance, but assuming she is drawing power from her throne in ICC, then she will have damn near limitless mana supplies. Oh, and since she'd be wielding necromantic powers as well, any enemies she kills in close proximity to herself she could reanimate to come to her aid if need be. However, I guess she would have more trouble if another potent magic user went up against her, like Kael'thas, for instance. Just my thoughts on the matter. Let me know what you guys think :P

This remind me of a custom map in warcraft 3. There is a custom map in warcraft 3 call Azeroth wars cataclysm. A 12 players map with Azeroth as setting. One of the custom factions call remant scourge and there is an event where the remant scourge could invade Northend and if the player take out Bolvar. They could choose whatever hero to be the next lich king with each have different ability.

Arthas's connection to necromancy was super strong because he understood ritual magic. A regular warrior like varian would have to learn a lot to get near arthas lichking levels. Illidan would have become a monster lichking though.

Regarding Frostmourne being essential in becoming the Lich King, I have to disagree the current Lich King Bolvar Fordragon didn't really have access to Frostmourne, considering Frostmourne has been shattered, it seems the only object needed is the helm of domination. All things aside it's a very interesting concept. What makes the Lich King so fascinating is that its powers, skills, and by extension personality evolves depending on who takes up the mantle.

What about Gul'dan? Already considered loyal by the legion, and already an immensely powerful and experienced warlock. Like Jaina, I imagine his enhanced powers more than compensating for any dueling. The Lich King is more general than soldier, and would probably be better served playing to his strengths: nearly infinite waves of undead minions while he casts spells from afar. Gul'dan is also apparently a decent teacher (he taught Cho'gall magic in the warcraft 2 manual anyway), meaning he could probably do a decnet job (especially with Kel'Thuzad's expertise thrown in) of making Fel Liches that are powerful necromancers AND warlocks, to serve as dangerous and useful lieutenants (a minature version of himself basically)

I was waiting for you to mention Uther. Basically everything Arthas had on a larger scale. Also, the better choice would've been for Arthas to quarantine Startholme. If he and his men had taken up positions at the gate, nothing could've gotten out. The Light would've empowered Arthas and Uther to be able to withstand anything, while Jaina went to get help.

I was thinking about this today while doing the ravencrest scenario. If illidan was so ok with sacrificing his own moon guard, I thought what if he overpowered Arthas on top off icc. I think he would have taken the power in a heartbeat, but then we wouldn’t have the sad story we do, and Jaina wouldn’t be a badass on her new boat :)

In most RPG's The most powerfuull deathnights are ex-paladins. the reasoning behind this is that deathnight-dom* doesnt give you necromantic powers. it twists your own powers into death-thematic ones. being an ex-holy user is what made him such a powerfull deathnight. varian or any other warrior would be vastly inferior to Arthas. check out D&D srd blackguard class info: Fallen Paladins: Blackguards who have levels in the paladin class (that is to say, are now ex-paladins) gain extra abilities the more levels of paladin they have.
