Good to hear new strategy! Dont be shy about charging upfront ! It’s “normal” to cover materials and stick to it. So only your time cost at risk

Colors look good Lee. Parts costs up front. It is bad enough if you end up out of pocket on labour and machining, but getting stuck for parts you pay for makes the hurt much worse.

The Audi's were always interesting! Back in the late '80s I worked for a German company (here in the US), and they had a chance to import some "Gray Market" (or as you spell it "Grey") Audi's. Most of them got the 5000s (or 2000s I forget which). The ones that, as it turned out, had the "unintended acceleration" issue. I was interested in the Coupe GT, but having to buy it outright was out of the question, and financing would be "problematic". I wound up with my 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE (rare 5-speed car, Getrag gearbox, loaded to the gills).

Ed Bradley’s 17 minute “investigative report” aired on November 23, 1986. Between interviews of the teary-eyed “victims” (drivers) of unintended acceleration swearing their feet were on the brake pedal, CBS showed a clip of a driverless Audi lurching forward on its own. Viewers didn’t get to see the canister of compressed air on the passenger-side floor with a hose running to a hole drilled in the transmission. An “expert” had rigged the Rube Goldberg device to shift the big Audi into drive and, like any automatic-equipped car, move forward (unless the brakes are depressed). The clip was blatantly deceptive AND totally irrelevant. Nobody claimed driverless Audis were taking off and killing kids and grannies. Mom was always at the wheel, pushing the 5000’s “brake” pedal with all her might. In 1989, after three years of studying the blatantly obvious, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued their report on Audi’s “sudden unintended acceleration problem.” NHTA’s findings fully exonerated Audi and some other implicated foreign makes”. The report concluded that the Audi’s pedal placement was different enough from American cars’ normal set-up (closer to each other) to cause some drivers to mistakenly press the gas instead of the brake. 60 Minutes did not retract their piece; they called the NHTSA report “an opinion.” (Update: Audi (and many others manufacturers) quickly added an automatic transmission interlock, making it impossible to shift into drive or reverse without a foot on the (real) brake.) A flood of lawsuits was already washing over Audi, not to mention a tsunami of bad publicity. Audi took a questionable stance: they didn’t flat out blame the drivers for the problem, even after the NHTSA report came out. Hey, the customer’s always right, and we sure wouldn’t want to make our American customers look stupid. Anything but that. Although Audi mostly side-steps the issue of pedal misapplication, at the end they make it quite clear that this is what caused the perceived UA events. Of course, this lesson in Physics 101 repeated itself 25 years later, when it was Toyota’s turn to suck it up and try to not make its drivers look stupid. But we’ll save that one for another unintended day. One thing is clear: the word “unintended” is the perfect one to use for these events: “I didn’t intend to be pressing the gas pedal with all my might”

5 cylinder engines. I had a Volvo C70 convertible with a 2.3 T5 engine (Engine code B5234T9). Fantastic sounding engine, especially in low roof car parks with the top down. Put out 236bhp stock. Not the best track day car, bit floppy being a convertible, but still a hoot. Maxed it out at 143mph (limited, due to the risk of ripping the roof off, so I was told). Would I have another? Possibly, when I’ve got bored of the Audi A8L Quattro with its stage 1 tuned 4.2L Bi Turbo TDI (another practically useless track car, but it will be a giggle). Fitted with hand controls as I don’t have working legs, it’s not about giving up, it’s adapting to compensate. Keep up the good work, I don’t really care how often and the content. It’s all engineering, and it makes me happy. I think you’ve struck a happy medium now, you look a lot better for taking the pressure off, by having to much rigidity on how many videos you produce. Yes it’s your shop front almost, but don’t put yourself back in the shadow of the big black dog that is indicative of so many mental health issues. (Being an incomplete paraplegic with secondary progressive MS is no tea party, but I have a wonderful housemate called Angie who can put the pieces back together)

You could switch from a using a paper job card, and instead start to use an app. Then you can enter your timesheets twice a day, directly into the accounting system. This saves time and keeps the time actually spent on each project up to date. You can then use this to do progress payment invoices weekly, that are due for immediate payment. If the punter does not pay immediately, you stop work on that engine.

It is widely acknowledged that the best sounding engine of all time up to the present day is the Alfa Romeo V6 Busso 12V engine. One of the problems with charging interim accounts is how you determine title. It doesn't matter too much if the job reaches completion but if it doesn't then the value of the work to that stage has a good chance of being in dispute as the customer/contractor have different views of that value. To overcome that a schedule of payments needs to be established at the outset along with a schedule of the work to be achieved. Also, is it intended to only continue the work once the interim invoice has been paid? That could mean a stop/start arrangement that may irritate customers. Any parts for the job that have not been installed but paid for need to be specifically identified and separated. This is vitally important specifically if there is a dispute or Barum Engines cease trading.

Best sounding engine: This would have to be the Ford Performance V10 secret development engine, that was fitted to the Enduro Racing Trophy Truck. It had a "bag of snakes" 10 into one exhaust, and it sounded like an F1 engine. You could hear it approach you across the desert from 10 mile away.

Hey Lee, no offense but it is called "Ur-Quattro"not "U"-"R", lol. From wiki: The original Quattro model is also commonly referred to as the Ur-Quattro - the "Ur-" (German for "primordial", "original", or "first of its kind") is an augmentative prefix. Or like in "Uroma" = "Great Grandma" 😂

I remember a story my grandad used to tell me (he's been dead for 30 years so forgive me if I got the details wrong and these events happen before I was born 40 years ago). He used to have a Escort van (I think it was a mk1). My Great aunt and uncle had a caravan and my nan and grandad were thinking of getting one to as they did not only. For holidays but also for the steam rallies. So he borrowed my Great aunt and uncles caravan to see if the van was strong enough. (I think it was a 1200cc). He said the only time he got up to 30mph was going down hill with a tail wind haha.

Without even watching your vid (no worries; I will!!) an immediate answer to your title!!!! BEST SOUNDING ENGINE EVER MADE IS THE SCANIA V8 WITH VALVE IN THE EXHAUST!!! 16 Ltr with huge turbo, 580 HP and torque like nothing else…. On a wet road at full throttle in 5th gear the rear wheels will spin from 40 to 60 km/h….. even with an empty trailer on the fifth wheel…. The sound gives me Gooseskin every time I get to drive this truck….. it is a dark rumble at lower (500-750rpm) combined with a Turbowhistle that reacts to what I do with the throttle… as rpm increases the sound becomes increasingly louder and sharper sounding like BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG from about 1200 rpm…. No Ferrari or race engine or motorbike I know of is a match… well to me anyway!! And one flips the switch; the air operated valve in the exhaust is shut and everything is back to normal….
