I suggest advising that owner, that there is no warranty on the repairs to the block that has the bliming great big hole in the side of the bore. This should also be noted on the invoice.

When we built the brake valves for the F-18 Hornet we would put the spool sets and sleeves in a 2 stage freezer (-120° F) and they would slip right into the main body with just hand pressure. (Using gloves of course) On our farm we used Dry Ice to cool the cylinder liners on the overhauls we did on our tractor engines.

Gees, that porous block worries me. I am not sure I'd want to rely on that liner to prevent a water leak. I'd scrap the bloc. I hope it doesn't come back to bite you. Great advice to young men there Lee!

My thoughts were the same.

How do you think a wet liner works? It’s only got O Rings around it keeping the Water out of the Sump.
@terencehawkes3933Күн бұрын
@@paulnolan1352 No O''rings on that one. It's supposed to be a dry liner. The fact that the cast iron is already perforated means that block is weak as hell. Water will work its way down past the liner into the sump. I wouldn't risk doing that.
@paulnolan1352Күн бұрын
@@terencehawkes3933 you have misunderstood my response. If a Wet liner can stay dry with only O rings stopping water ingress then I’m sure a liner pressed into a parent bore at 2.5tonnes force with a 3 thou interference fit and 620 loctite isn’t going to leak.
@paulnolan1352Күн бұрын
@@terencehawkes3933 Nothing wrong with the block, the perforated cast is the unstressed thin cast of the water jacket. The strength of the block is in the cast webs which are stressed grey cast iron.

I knew what I wanted to be at 16, an engineer! And guess what? I became a mechanical engineer, fitter/turner. My days were full of building machines, turning, milling, grinding. Now at 73 I miss it all.

You know what about jobs. It doesn't matter if its the best paid job in the world, if you don't enjoy or love what you do. It's no fun and a drag.
@ambydaly5713Күн бұрын
Why don’t you make a standard practice of checking all bored blocks with NDT tester kit? That way you will ensure that all your work is free from porousity?

Lee, Couldn't you use the extra 3" you're cutting off as a piston installation tool ? Load a piston with the rings pre set for gap and alignment in that cutoff segment with the piston jutting out a bit for finding allignment in installed sleeve section ?

I did my apprenticeship with BOAC starting at 16 as an aircraft electrician retired 45 years later from British Airways as a licenced aircraft engineer (avionics). I was not the only one to retire without moving jobs the airline changed it's name we carried on just the same. The pension was the thing we stayed for.

I would have thought you would have needed to fitted new rings with you reboring cylinders or fitting new liners. 🤔
@deanharriss202920 сағат бұрын
I’m not convinced that liner will seal that. Especially with thermal expansion, also will that corrosion not just get worse?

Would using liquid nitrogen to fit the liners help or hurt the quality of the end product? Especially where there is a porous cylinder.
@stujones997619 сағат бұрын
Liquid Nitrogen shrinking the liner they must be fitted clean and dry. If you apply any sealant or oil it will grab the sleeve before they are home

I had no idea of what I wanted to be when I was a young g kid, but by the time I was in my late teens I wanted to be a racing driver as I found that I had a natural talent for it, whatever car I was in. Not trying to blow my own trumpet or anything, it’s just how it was. Anyway, the thing with motorsport, it’s an expensive game to get into, money being something I had no access to, and you need to know the right people too. If only my parents could afford to get me into carts when I was young, maybe things could have been different. 😐

hi ,when cummins fit liners to the bigger engines they fit a 50 to 100 thou shim between the top of the liner and the block (suspect to allow for heat expansion in use) , you could have cooled the liner in the freezer ( it would have fell in to the hole)???? very entertaining
