I'm glad Lonnie brought it up. Back then women's only security was being married. It wasn't always about love it was about security. Plus it was more pleasure for the man, how the women felt did not matter it was all about making him feel good. Women who were single were shamed for it aswell. Just sad sad. Now women can choose what they want to deal with and not. I dont really think marriages will ever be as high as they use to be going forward cause now it's about being in a marriage that's based on truth, faithfulness, and actual love for eachother.

Yes! Premarital counseling and marriage counseling are NOT a bad thing at all, I do think they are stigmatized as if people shouldn’t need a third party to help. Seeing a different perspective can be so helpful. Years of marriage counseling still cannot “fix” each other’s issues if both sides are not willing to work through it together though.

Now ladies .... I love you all. And ... having both sets of grandparents who were married for 70 years each, real love does exist. My grandfather was completely heartbroken when the love of his life died after 70 years. He just gave up. He started having chest pains and we had to take him to the ER. He told the sweet little nurse, "My heart is broken." On the other side of my family, my grandma of 70 years buried my grandfather. She is completely lost with out him. She talks about him all the time and says she is so glad she had a long life with him. Real love does exist.
@kevinroyceho3 жыл бұрын
Of course real love exists. No one here is denying that... But you have to understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to actually be in a healthy relationship with safety, security, love and respect. And the fact of the matter is, so many human beings (mostly women) have had to endure abusive and traumatic relationships because they had no other choice. There’s nowhere else to go, no one else to support them and no other options for them. This is especially true for immigrant families. All this is another narrative that needs to be discussed and validated!

My grandparents were happily married for 65 years and they're always said their secret is that they were best friends and always acted as a team. For example, they ran a business together in the 50s as equal partners. At the time people would be say things about him 'letting' his wife be in charge of all the money, and he'd immediately admit to failing math and her being the brains of the marriage. I just wanted to mention this as the other side of things. Not every long marriage is an unwanted burden held on to for a lack of choice.

@tatianadaniel35694 жыл бұрын
@@melmel7011 I'm not quite able to follow what you're saying. The question was: Why aren't modern day marriages lasting as long as they did back in the day?Though abuse, religious misunderstandings/fears, and financial inadequacy were common factors for some women and men staying married longer back in the day, where is the discussion in which we acknowledge that our generation and the selfish culture we've embraced and romanticized not adhere to basic moral principles such as exercising the beauty of discipline, forgiveness, accountability, and care? The conversation the ladies had was not geared toward establishing well-rounded explanations as to why marriages are failing at an all-time high. As I said before, though Loni did mention that not all longstanding marriages were abusive, the conversation, itself, created this narrative that the majority of marriages lasted longer than today because the women suffered more. They didn't add balance to the fact that people (husband and wives) these days don't even honor their marriage vows because at the root of every decision they make is selfishness and pride which cannot produce a healthy and joyous marriage.

My parents were together 29 years and married for 28 but i know that my mom was not happy for a lot of those years because she didn't feel loved in a way she felt like she deserved. It got to the point where she would meet up once a month with one of her girlfriend's husband cause she felt closer to him and could talk to him about stuff but not my dad. Then the girlfriend's husband passed away but she would still go to that same place once a month after he was gone and would talk with other friends about him. It actually started to become a rumor that my mom and this other man were having an affair even though nothing physical ever happened. I remember asking her once if she wasn't happy why she didn't try to leave my dad and her answer was that she didn't have any money and she didn't have a place to go which to this day i think about that moment a lot. When my mom was about to pass away she was able to let my dad know that she loved him and those would be the last words she would speak in this world cause she left not long after that moment

I love this conversation. I am just 23 and starting to realize the reality of this. You have to put up with some crap I order to stay together & my grandma always tells me “no hay dos glorias juntas” meaning “you can’t have everything in life” people admire marriages that have last 30+ years but like Adrian says it’s true. That’s the reality of things.. you have to balance the scale .... It’s all about constant forgiveness & sacrifice. That or probably stay alone forever. It’s hard to find someone that does not have deep baggage (alcoholism, drugs, sex addiction, porn addiction, verbal/physical abusive, extreme temper, extreme mental illness, can’t hold a job, marriage rape, shutting down and now communicating, workaholics, gamblers, money abuse, extreme jealousy, lazy husbands/no true coparenting, bad mother in law issues, pathological liars), constant social media indefinitely/emotional cheating) I could go in and on ...

They described my aunt’s marriage. They been married since forever. She has/had no job, lack of education, no car, barely knows English, etc. She relies on her husband for everything! She had to put up with his multiple love affairs. Yes, it’s a long marriage til death do them part but it doesn’t mean it is a great one!

Let me save you some time,the top 3 reasons are: 1. 3rd party influence- do not go to anybody about your problems unless they share a marriage certificate with you. 2. Options- I would make some of you blush at how desperate men who are married/single throw themselves at me all the time(I’m married) on social media. Goes for both sexes. 3. Glamourization of Marriage- it is a marathon not a race , there are certain days we’re you’re not feeling it and you have to continue .

Pretty obvious with marriage these days vs. the past: today we *choose* to marry for love vs. in the past we married for function...it's changes in societal expectations (including religion), function/benefit of marriage, and women's rights (ie. legal rights) to work and, furthermore, to choose to divorce. A more realistic view of this topic would be to compare women filing vs. men filing for divorce then vs. now.

My great-grandmother is from Indonesia, was married and had 2 kids. Her husband and daughter died in an accident because of the heavy rain. She went to the Netherlands by boat with her son (at that time Indonesia was a colony from the Netherlands). She got married to someone who lived in the Netherlands while she was on the boat (i.e. never seen this man before, no picture nothing, only a name). Unfortunately women weren't allowed to work or at least didn't make enough to support a family, so she had no choice but to marry someone she didn't know. When she and her son arrived in the Netherlands they found out he was horrible, abusive, a narcissist, anything bad you name it (there was a reason he wasn't yet married....). After knowing what she's been through and my grandfather (her son) has been through I made a promise to myself to NEVER settle for anything I don't deserve. We're blessed to live in a time where we can choose who we marry, we can choose we don't even want to get married. I'm so happy I'm a young adult in the 21st century.

A friend of mine got divorced and no one knew why. And they have twins together, so he wanted me there to be at the custody battle hearing. She wanted a divorce from him because SHE DIDN'T WANT TO RAISE THEIR KIDS TOGETHER. Their marriage failed, from her standpoint, because of the children. I was so disgusted with the fact she blamed her children because she got a divorce. Needless to say, he got full custody.

It's both what Adrienne and Garcelle said. That's why I never praise and "Look up"to ANY ONES" marriage because you dont know what's going on behind closed doors. Theres only one way to look at marriage and it's the Biblical way. If we don't go into it like that, already people are doomed.God doesnt like Divorce, so make sure WE all make great choices the 1st time. Marriage is nooo joke. 😬
@lucky4evr14 жыл бұрын
God doesn't like divorce??? Lol..ok. I'm pretty sure you're wrong!
@@dashelledisna6239 I don't care what that says. I care about the people who had near death experiences and lives to tell their stories. Here's one for you..a woman said "GOD" asked why should I send you back.. oh you have children?? So!.. What about your horrible husband? Long story short.. She came back.. Divorced her husband, opened her own shop and is striving to this day. So I'm sorry I don't believe "God" dislikes divorce 🤷

@@lucky4evr1 If you don’t care about the source then don’t come for me under my comment beloved. God hates divorce like I said. And read my comment, I said that’s why we need to make sure we make a good decision the 1st time. Read all the chapters that I mentioned.There are ways to get out of marriage , but ideally God didn’t make marriage so people can just divorce. Thank you!
