@@Mythraen and obviously he puts on the ring and takes it off multiple times in the scene... Most likely reason is the original shot he took off his wedding ring (the actor was married when the episode was filmed and for at least 8 years after) but then forgot to remove it in pickup shots. However, it's possible they intended for him to be married and he never wears his real ring on the job but they forgot to issue him a prop ring for the pickup shots.

@@macmcleod1188 The fact that the judge does NOT get upset (le's be real - if he were having an extramarital affair, he WOULD be upset at being exposed) gives credibility both to the "judge is single" theory AND to the "actor was married and forgot to take off the ring for one of the takes" explanation. Also, the "invited Monk to the wedding" thing is now my headcanon.

@@burstcity3832 It is true, that only bad guys get boss music... HOWEVER, perspective is a very powerful thing. From the Judge's perspective, he is the protagonist, either doing a story quest, or having fun with a side quest or two, that he heard has interesting side bosses. During this side quest, he asks Monk a question that'll affect the decision he will make in regards to the quest at hand. This in turn, makes Monk the antagonist for this side quest as a result of this question. Thus Boss Music plays, as Monk wrecks him.

There is one episode that I have a problem with. Monk becomes obsessed with why a particular woman looks familiar to him. His obsession causes insomnia and he wanders the streets at night. He witnesses what appears to be a murder, but it wasn't. It was a scam to steal rare coins from a dealer. No one died. In the course of Monk's investigation of the "murder", people die. His obsession with the "familiar" woman caused people to die. The reason for his obsession with the woman is a touching moment, but they needed a better plot device to get his insomnia to do some good instead of cause murders.

@@Gwentheferret That is an interesting idea. The thought "will this man recognize the shirt my stenographer is wearing, is actually mine?" never crossed my mind at all, as being what went through the judge's head. I always thought it as "The question implies the shirt I am wearing, therefore don't need to specify I want him to describe the shirt I am wearing." Which is a very accurate thought, ask anyone other than Monk, and they would assume the shirt the judge is wearing, and thus ignore everyone else in the room. Honestly, I love this scene between Monk and the Judge, maybe one of my favs. The Judge asked a simple question to see proof of Monk's Abilities, one many could have answered (since it was only a plain white shirt with a collar), and Monk still crushed him. No triumph in his voice, no judgement, and still no holding back with his calm, but brutal honesty based on a whole bunch of facts. And even though it could have been humiliating for the Judge in front of all those witnesses, he didn't look embarassed. Maybe he was proud to have an affair with a cutie like the stenographer or maybe he knew, that he would have to face no consequences with a wife, since he wasn't wearing a wedding ring (and I am sure Monk would have pointed out if he had one hidden). He also was kind of a man of honor by not punishing Monk for his attempt of humiliation and he even decided in his favour.

Sorry, you are very un-Monk-like. 1) The judge is not wearing a plain white shirt though Monk's shirt is a plain white buttondown. The shirt is patterned with thin and wider blue striping and it has French cuffs (Note the cufflinks.) The judge IS wearing a wedding ring for almost the entire clip; it goes missing at the end. The latter is probably the director trolling us. You had the opportunity to watch that clip as many times as you wished and still got it wrong.
@chrisflanagan7564
@chrisflanagan7564 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasreynolds3111 the ring comes and goes, and is missing in some shots at the start of the clip as well as the end. When we first see him there is no ring, then we see over his shoulder and there is a ring, then it's gone again, then back, and so on. But, yeah, the judges shirt is not plain white. The judge's mistake was not just saying "The one I'm wearing would be fine" but there was also a chance that Monk could have been about to say some thing like "The shirt I saw you wearing two weeks ago when XYZ". He knew of Monk's legendary skills and was hoping to be amazed... he just didn't expect him to nail him to the wall like that. ;)

I keep coming back to this clip, it’s so good. Monk goes above and beyond to prove not just his memory, but his strong reasoning skills, all by revealing an affair. Of course, he never makes a threat; it’s strictly professional and in no way malicious. He’s not implying he’ll go tell his wife; he’s just using the best possible thing in that moment to prove his validity to appeal to the judge’s core duty: to rule favorably with the truth. And Monk shows his respect by still saying his title. The judge, of course, recognizes what Monk is doing, and doesn’t feel slighted. He’s impressed, but composed. Nobody in that room really has any stakes in revealing his relationship, after all. So instead of getting mad, he does his job properly. Even if he did worry he’d be exposed, purposefully ruling against Monk would just lengthen the issue, and make his exposure a certainty instead of a possibility. We know the judge for such a short amount of time, and yet, he’s characterized beautifully for an amazing payoff. Bravo!
