He witnesses what appears to be a murder, but it wasn't. It was a scam to steal rare coins from a dealer. No one died. In the course of Monk's investigation of the "murder", people die. His obsession with the "familiar" woman caused people to die. The reason for his obsession with the woman is a touching moment, but they needed a better plot device to get his insomnia to do some good instead of cause murders.

@JF-um3wz Жыл бұрын
I keep coming back to this clip, it’s so good. Monk goes above and beyond to prove not just his memory, but his strong reasoning skills, all by revealing an affair. Of course, he never makes a threat; it’s strictly professional and in no way malicious. He’s not implying he’ll go tell his wife; he’s just using the best possible thing in that moment to prove his validity to appeal to the judge’s core duty: to rule favorably with the truth. And Monk shows his respect by still saying his title. The judge, of course, recognizes what Monk is doing, and doesn’t feel slighted. He’s impressed, but composed. Nobody in that room really has any stakes in revealing his relationship, after all. So instead of getting mad, he does his job properly. Even if he did worry he’d be exposed, purposefully ruling against Monk would just lengthen the issue, and make his exposure a certainty instead of a possibility. We know the judge for such a short amount of time, and yet, he’s characterized beautifully for an amazing payoff. Bravo!
