Forreal. I came to see this for the comedy (which I still enjoyed), so having this GENUINE emotional maturity come out of NOWHERE was a shock to the system in the best kinda way.
As a musician myself the transition in his confidence when he plays is perfect. It's so real and relatable. He starts stiff in his playing and his voice isn't relaxed. As he moves through the song his confidence builds, his singing loosens up and his playing relaxes. You start to hear little fills and then nearing the end his singing is beautiful and he's busting out riffs on the piano. Such a great scene!

I know this is just a movie, and this is simply a scene in the script, but watching Jennifer absorb the gravity of that song, the way the camera moves in, the way the muscles clinch in her neck, and she does this tense swallow and looks around fearing she is being judged at that moment is such a powerful scene, it’s quite captivating. If there was an Oscar category for "best scene in a movie," I think this would win hands down. The lighting is impeccable, the camera moves and editing sublime, and everything in the script has set us up for this surprise moment in which Maddie witnesses Percy's innocence, talent, and beauty; she is stripped emotionally naked, more naked than in the beach scene. He "kills her softly" with his song, while unaware of what he's actually doing to her. Her acting in this scene: seeing her machinations and their effects laid bare, and underneath it her true self, her appreciation of him, is almost breathtaking. And we, as the audience (most of us unfamiliar with Andrew Feldman's musical talents) are picking our collective jaws off the floor. Consider that somehow just prior, we were along for the ride when he clung for his life, naked, on the hood of her car as she evaded the police. Now, suddenly, he's in a tuxedo, turning a Hall & Oates pop-song into a vulnerable heart-piercing ballad. This is one of those "under the radar" movies that is, perhaps for this scene alone, unforgettable. Kudos and thank you to all who made it. The script doesn't let go, as she asks afterwards, "What are you?" It might be a silly and implausible movie, but everybody brought their "A" game, and it shows!

He is actually about to say something to his date but stops to turn and listen to Percy. I wonder how rehearsed that was and if they did multiple takes to get that guy's reaction right. Maybe he overdid it just a tad, because I probably shouldn't be paying that much attention to him and yet his reaction is very logical. This cover is just mind-blowing. I don't mean the performance, which contains so many flaws essential to the storytelling of the film, but musically unfortunate. But the lowered tempo and the arrangement for nothing more than a piano and voice reveal some genuinely damn good chords, color tones, and plain masterful songwriting. I cannot understand what could have possessed Hall & Oates to have recorded the awful rendering with which we are all so familiar, when there's a gem like this underneath it. I am so grateful to whomever saw the potential in this music and realized it for us to enjoy. My consistent feeling when listening to this is one of discovery - unearthing something that I was much too young to appreciate, but am fortunate enough to have a second shot at it.

Lots of comments about Jennifer Lawrence, but this scene hits because of Barth Feldman. That he can play imperfectly and even sing imperfectly (sometimes not synching the piano with the voice, the thinner more hesitant vocals at the beginning, and even hitting the wrong key with the last chord) had to be practiced many times. Add superb acting to the musical performance. How does he do all of that at the same time? This doesn't take away from JL and her performance, which are excellent too, but his is another level.

The fact the actor sings it and it's not someone else makes it so much better.

I actually started crying during this scene, I cant pinpoint it exactly, but something resonated with me deeply.

For a movie that otherwise doesn't do a lot of resonating, this scene does. It's how he (convincingly) starts out with some hesitancy, slowly builds confidence as he goes along, his facial expressions in the process, and then Jennifer's just absolutely stunned look that we see several different times, a look that seems to say so much without her having to say a word. And the way this kid sings it says SO much more than the original H&O version ever did, and from my understanding, he's the one who decided to play and sing it the way he did. Yeah, it hit me in much the same way.

Yes me too I don't know what it was. I was being strong and then I was like oh they're playing the whole song 🥹😭

One of the best renditions of the song I’ve heard. Has more drama in it and pathos than hall and Oates who I liked

This entire scene was made perfectly; the acting, performance and what not, just perfect.

Very good piano skills, a true Masterpiece, lovely song and voice. Reminds me of Beatrice, the Golden Witch. 😊

Even though she remains almost completely still, she conveys so much emotion, and it really propels this scene forward...

That's why she is paid so high... A director can't direct movement of eye and eye brow, lips... Those subtle expression was gifted by a great actor or actress... Here Jennifer proved that....

Genuinly good movie. with heart and this is one of the better scenes. Amd hearing the lyics of this classic in this slowed down version make you realize how genius the song is.

Saw this film long back, but this scene stuck with me like an itch and I keep coming back here to scratch it. Jennifer Lawrence might chew you up, but she definitely chewed up this scene. With mere twitches of her face and neck muscles, with her eyes, with her radiating vulnerability, she conveys so much. What a powerhouse of a talent she is. In a movie that barely takes itself seriously keeps things light and fun, this was surprisingly one of the most memorably scenes in films last year.

I haven't seen the movie and it somehow popped up in my FB feed. I watched it with nil context and was mesmerized by the mood and how well he played the song. I might have to watch the movie now.

I just watched the movie and it was quite different to what I expected. Slap stick comedy at times then some drama and a liberating ending. I quite liked it and liked the characters also. 9/10 for me as it made me feel good afterwards 😊

1:15 She’ll only come out at night The lean and hungry type Nothing is new I’ve seen her here before Watching and waiting She’s sitting with you but her eyes are on the door So many have paid to see What you think you’re getting for free The woman is wild she-cat tamed by the purrs of jaguar Moneys the matter If you’re in it for love You ain’t gonna get too far-ar-ar Woah here she comes watch out boy she’ll chew you up Oh here she comes She’s a maneater I wouldn’t if I were you I know what she can do She’s deadly man, she can really rip your world apart Mind over matter oh the beauty is there but a beast is in the heart Oh here she comes watch out boy she’ll chew you up Oh here she comes She’s a maneater

This movie has to be thee best movie I’ve ever seen or at least in a long time. Beautiful scene and honestly adorable vibes in the movie. I watched it last night and might watch it again if I can watch it with someone that never seen it before. Also, I only ever heard of Jennifer Lawrence as a name never put a face to it cause I didn’t really care to be curious about it just knew she was famous. I didn’t know she was so beautiful until she caught my eye in the movie I’m like hold up she’s gorgeous. Beautiful woman funny moments and overall a phenomenal movie. Love it! I hope they make more movies on that like a sequel or something. I need to watch more of it lmao. I also love how the movie starts out making her look stupid and then her intel randomly pops out when the parents basically interviewed her 😂 had me like woah your first impression wasn’t good at all but okay you’ve impressed me ahaha. Love the movie. 120% recommend it!!

Imagine being skewered and dissected, in front of a crowd, by someone you see as a child, singing a SONG.
@zacharias72848 күн бұрын
I’ve always loved the obvious subtext of this scene (she’s the maneater and she realizes this as the song goes on). But I never noticed how some simple camera work/cinematography really captures that intensity and almost makes it feel like an intimate moment between them. When he first sits at the piano, the head-on shots of both of them are fairly wide. But they keep pushing in on them until that big moment of realization. Her facial expression (and his) help sell it, but the camerawork really helps it transition from him playing for a restaurant to him playing for (or almost AT) her.

All great comments. Only thing I would add is his voice when she says she’s gonna tell everyone what a great lover he is he is confident, “go ahead, about time they knew,” immediately followed by him sounding like a scared little kid with his voice cracking “what do you want me to play!” Great acting in showing his dimension. Such a wonderful and impactful scene!!
