Jake (me) finds himself in a mall in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Which turns out to be a great place to learn about viruses - what are they, how do they affect you, how do you stop them…and can they give you zombie super strength (i.e. ripping off some limbs with your bare zombie hands)?

I feel the same as you... what I think is crazy though is, our government actually has a real plan already set up, incase zombies actually became real. What confuses me though is... if zombies were real, they'd have to be the slow type of zombie but, only for a short period of time, until the body decomposes.. wouldnt they, eventually, just be a puddle on the ground?

Something you didn’t take into consideration when it came to discussing zombie strength is that human purposely limit their strength to avoid damaging their own body. A zombie does not feel pain and has no sense of self preservation, therefore they would not limit their strength an could rip someone apart.

I never understood why zombie survivors never deck themselves with biker leather and chainmail. Chainmail is easy to make and, combined with leather, could offer a lot of protection, at the very least, for your delicious, bite-able limbs.
@kyoshi1643
@kyoshi1643 2 жыл бұрын
It's too heavy, it also comes down to things like joints. Chainmail is really heavy and it takes a lot of energy to carry around. If you were to cover yourself in chainmail, you won't be able to cover 100% of your body and the energy required is way too much.
@critterkhan8147
@critterkhan8147 2 жыл бұрын
@@kyoshi1643 a chain shirt and coif would add a lot of protection to the right areas (arms, neck). The weight is pretty well distributed, one would get used to it right quick. Any where you wouldn't wear chain, you would supplement with leather. I have heavy leather pants, add suspenders and they pretty well float. My ancestors practically lived in this type of armour. Could I sprint for long in this type of clothing? Nope. But I'm not a sprinter anyways, so my only tactic would be to fight.

“2.5 times a person can generate” then just have three zombies pull on ur arm. I’m sure it’d come right off.
@WWalton1996
@WWalton1996 2 жыл бұрын
Also human limits come from self preservation, the same reason you can't bite your finger off at the joint, despite the fact that you absolutely can, just your mind tells you to tone it back. Your muscles don't want to be ripped irreparably apart so the human body places minutes on what you can do which can be exceeded with adrenaline or, in the instance of zombies, death. A corpse with no sensation of pain and no self preservation could potentially output more force than a living human, but they'd not be able to keep it up over and over without destroying their arms.

@@WWalton1996 I mean if one zombie could rip your limb off what would stop their limb from being what’s pulled off? Especially if it’s a rotting corpse. You also got to factor in things like grip and traction. I think your fingers are way more likely to snap or break off before you manage to pull someones limb off.

When you were talking about pulling limbs off and were saying about Max strength of humans. People have a mechanism that says for example, "that hurts your jaw. Don't bite so hard." Zombies don't have that shutoff switch, so they can use full human potential at all times, within the limits of their rotting flesh. So, were those numbers tested with alive people, or is it the absolute most a human can do, given our structure?
@Robinlarsson83
@Robinlarsson83 2 жыл бұрын
Also, as a grown male I'm more than confident that I can generate more than 640N of pull force, that is just ~64kg. Perhaps not easily with just one arm with the torso stationary, but who says that you can't use both hands and generate the majority of the force with your legs? 1600N is a fair bit, but far from impossible with a good grip.

I think Jake ignores the fact that if you have two zombies (that were once pretty strong humans) pulling in opposite directions could maybe achieve a pull force 2.5x the size of an average human, and pull off a limb. Or you could have 3 or 4 zombies pulling on one arm in a horde. It's probably very likely that a mob of zombies could quite literally rip you limb from limb

Apples to oranges. Both fruit, I mean viruses, but Covid is highly survivable. The zombie virus is almost always portrayed as apocalyptic, a death sentence. Also ones a respiratory virus, the other is more like an STD needing body fluids like blood, saliva or things of that nature.

Lets not forget that the zombie part of a "realistic" zombie apocalypse would only last a few months at most. Undead zombies would decompose in a few weeks and rabies zombies would be dead in a week tops, since people/animals with rabies can't really swallow anything, so they don't drink

Thing is it would be a parisyte and since the body always has the potential strength it gains from adrenaline meaning in that situation the limiters the body put in place to prevent the body from overly damaging itself would be gone and the body would pretty much be in a permanent adrenaline induced state (same state mother's use to lift cars and other things when trying to save their child).
