In this episode of into the mountains, I learn and practise important skills for ski mountaineering, such as how to rappel into a couloir, also known as "abseiling". The word is german for "ab" meaning down and seil translates to rope which gives the lovely word abseil "to down rope". I also had the pleasure to practise the scary skill of making a snow anchor to abseil off down an ice fall into a lovely little couloir. The last skill I was pleased to get to practise was how to ski cut (to try to release an avalanche to make the couloir safer afterwards). Enjoy.

Really interesting to see all the subtle differences guides teach on this kind of stuff. No right or wrong answers only unsafe ways to do it and its about understanding what makes it unsafe!. Great video as always Jens and looking forward to seeing you soon!

Love the honest commentary! It’s fine to have a beginner mindset when you are learning a new skill that’s completely different to what’s in your skill set, but when it’s just a little sideways step from something, you’re good at, it’s hard to stomach, the embarrassment and feelings of ineptitude. Good on you for putting yourself out there and being so open about it!

@@StompItTutorials Thanks for clarifying! And the proof was in the pudding: you remembered it easily. Good shit. Just a mnemonic way to do this particular "pilot's checklist" before dropping - momentary clarity about what's most important to be focusing on, as you envision your drop in.

We are Incredibly lucky to access this type of expertise for free. This rappel with backup its pretty good protocol but the wood trick was 🔥 the whole point of snow picket is hacked away with a piece of wood! You could backup with a ice axe or even with a bucket belay. Im going for my second season of skiing, looking forward to this channel!

Glad to see you’re making dreams come true! I could see maybe attaching a rated ring onto the cordelette that is being used on the wooden plank. This would help to eliminate rope on rope friction when pulling down the rappel rope after descent. Love this series. Keep going. Be safe out there.
@StompItTutorials
@StompItTutorials Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that :) Yes I why that could be good idea. But I think this is how the experienced guides etc do it mostly.
@camilocarrillo2132
@camilocarrillo2132 Жыл бұрын
No you don't understand, it a minimal rappel anchor you left behind. 1: A rated ring cost a small fortune, maillon rapide would be even worse to retrieve an icy rope. 2: the friction only wears down the cordelette fixed point, which you will left behind, not the rope. 3, it's icy anyways, even if it cuts down it's trash that was left behind and hopefully cleaned after the season.

some feedback: 1) ALWAYS use the stop knot. not only if you think it might be too short 2) put something like a figure 8 on both ends and not just a tiny knot that can slip through your belay device. With the method shown in the video, if you have uneven ends going down you risk falling still. Apart from, that, great video!

a question when you rapel down how do you take all the carabiners that you you to connect the rope with the rocks
@SviatoslavRimdenok
@SviatoslavRimdenok Жыл бұрын
the rock anchor at the top is already made of the bolt and a metal ring attached to it (sometimes it could be a metal chain connected to two bolts). You put a rope through that ring and don't leave a carabiner at the top. Also, it is a good safety practice to carry so called "quicklink" - they cost ~3bucks, but you can always leave them on top in case a bolt does not have a ring (i.e leave your own "ring").
