Located within Greater London, and around 15 miles south of central London, is the town of Coulsdon.
The first recorded reference of Coulsdon dates back to 675 AD when Frithwald, an Ealdorman and viceroy of King Wulfhere of Mercia gave land at 'Cuthraedesdune' to Chertsey Abbey. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as 'Colesdone'.
For several centuries, Coulsdon was a small manor owned by various wealthy families. In 1841 the first railway station in the town opened, and was called Stoats Nest, named after a nearby village. This was the first station to serve Epsom Downs Racecourse, although it closed just 15 years later, in 1856. In 1889 Coulsdon South station opened (originally named simply 'Coulsdon'). This was followed in 1899 by Coulsdon North (originally 'Stoats Nest and Cane Hill') and in 1904 by a third station, known as Smitham up until 2011 when it changed its name to Coulsdon Town. These opened up direct routes to both London and Brighton. Coulsdon North closed in 1983, although Coulsdon South and Coulsdon Town remain in use today.
Historically, Coulsdon was located within the county of Surrey up until 1965 with the formation of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Concurrently, the London Borough of Croydon was created, to which Coulsdon belongs.
