Located in the county of Surrey, and around 17 miles south of central London, is the town of Caterham.
Caterham consists of two distinct areas, namely Caterham Valley, where the railway station is located, and Caterham on the Hill, about half a mile to the west. The latter is home to St Lawrence Church which was established by the Normans in the late 11th century.
In 1856 the railway arrived in Caterham. The site chosen for the station was Caterham Valley, around 200 feet below the initial settlement referred to as Caterham on the Hill. With this came a significant amount of development around the valley area, thus the town centre we see today is comprised largely of Victorian buildings. St John the Evangelist Church, seen at the start, dates from the late 19th century.
To this day, Caterham Station serves as the southern terminus of the Caterham Line to Purley, which in turn connects to the Brighton Main Line. Trains to central London take around 50 minutes, making Caterham a practical commuter base for those working in the capital. It is situated within the M25, and around two miles south of the Metropolitan Green Belt separating Greater London from the neighbouring counties - in this case, Surrey.
Actor Bill Nighy was born in Caterham.
