Counsell Ejected Over Umpire Fail | HP Ump Cancels Out His Original Call, Hoped Nobody Noticed

With the new pitch clock rules (yea those pitch clock words again), part of the rule implemented is pitchers are limited to two disengagements (pickoff attempts or step offs) per plate appearance. From the get-go, you can see Cobb try to go over the strategy in his mind about how to deal with Rowdy Tellez. Giants’ catcher Joey Bart notices this and quickly indicates he is taking a mound visit. So the home plate umpire throws up his hands signaling time out and then he does one of those cock your head in thinking moments where he’s like “I hope nobody caught that”. Fast forward to 2-0, Cobb will check on the runner at 1st and the first base umpire throws up “2”. Right after that pickoff attempt, Cobb throws to first again and the first base umpire signals “3” and sends the runner to second via a balk. Rackley would approach Riggs the first base umpire telling him apparently the mound visit cancelled out the first disengagement. Counsell comes out and goes kind of crazy.

I've said it once and i'll say it again, if umpires can kick someone out for arguing a bad call by umpires, the umpire or umpires should be fined so they like playes and coches could all have a reason to learn and rememver the rules.

Loving this random ump approach of signalling one thing and meaning another. This is like ringing a batter up after a 1-1 strike, and saying "yeah, well I know I signalled ball last time, but it was a strike really"

I think this more of a rulebook fail. I can't find anything that clearly states that if a mound visit follows the pitcher stepping off the rubber counts (or doesn't count) toward the disengagement total. At least adding an "Approved Ruling" to this new rule will help make it more clear.

I see pitchers complaint,can't just step off when they need to,guess pitchers should just be allowed to quick pitch.They want a fast game,as soon as pitcher gets ball back,throw another pitch,hitter better be ready!
@theburnetts
@theburnetts Жыл бұрын
The rule book is a little vague about this. It says that a mound visit does not count as a disengagement. So the question is was that first disengagement a mound visit? Or can you convert a disengagement in to a mound visit? Clearly the umps needed a bit more clear communication so that everyone was aware that the first disengagement had been negated by the mound visit. But ultimately I think they got it right.
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Жыл бұрын
So if the first disengagement was a pick off, and then the catcher went out to talk to the pitcher, does it erase the pick off?

@theburnetts Жыл бұрын
@@CommonSense823 Good question. I have no idea. I doubt it.
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Жыл бұрын
@@theburnetts Exactly. Step off or pick off is defined exactly the same way under this rule. They should be treated the same way under this rule, meaning the step off does not get erased by the catcher later coming out to talk to the pitcher. They are two separate acts. If the catcher was granted time before the step off, sure there could be an argument about erasing the disengagement.
@theburnetts
@theburnetts Жыл бұрын
@@CommonSense823 I get what you are saying. However even on a normal catcher visit usually the first thing to happen is the pitcher steps off. MLB wants to make catcher visits not count towards the number of disengagements. So usually the pitcher steps off, the catcher asks for time and then he trots out to the mound. However if the pitcher steps off and then there is a pause of like 4 seconds and then the catcher stands up to visit the mound should that count as a disengagement? It's tricky.
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Жыл бұрын
@@theburnetts exactly my point (and yours). It’s not that hard to make it not tricky. Just define clearly what is allowed and what’s not. They did a poor job writing this rule and two different umpires on the same crew ruled it differently resulting in this mess.

The umps screwed up. But this is a stupid rule. A runner can get the pitcher to throw over 2 times then take as big a lead as he wants because the pitcher can’t throw over or step off? Am I understanding this correctly?

In the footage, the commentary team said if you throw over *and don't get him* for a third disengagement, the runner gets the base. Seems sensible.

they’re making all these rules to “speed up the game”, but if the umpire screws up, and a manager knows it, well they’ll just throw him out of the game. Umpires should not be allowed to just toss someone for whatever reason. they should have limitations on player/manager ejections.

The home plate umpire overruled the call of the first base umpire saying there were only two disengagements, not three, bringing the runner back to first. The home plate umpire screwed up by not calling that first disengagement, saying it was only a mound visit. A mound visit is not considered a disengagement.
