If you are interested in working with people, or finding out about yourself, or you are curious about human relationships; counselling is a field of study that may interest you.
Lecturer in Counselling & Psychotherapy, Dr Madalena Grobbelaar, discusses the Counselling courses offered by ECU's School of Arts & Humanities. She says ECU's Counselling course is taught by a team of counsellors, psychotherapists and clinical psychologists. Staff in the area are practicing clinicians.
Madalena says the course introduces students to therapeutic concepts across the human lifespan, from infancy to old age. The course covers individual counselling, family and couple therapy, group psychotherapy and working with children and adolescents.
Psychology and Counselling student, Brigid Morrigan, discusses why she chose to study a double major in this discipline with ECU. She felt that ECU's program would give her the most well-rounded view of what it is to be a counsellor or psychotherapist. She says that the program covers both the Psychology aspect, in learning about human behaviour, as well as the Counselling aspect in covering the developmental cycle, the human life cycle and the psychodynamic properties of what people go through.
Psychology and Counselling student, Shivani Vekaria, says she chose ECU because the University is well known for its Psychology and Social Science degree and the flexibility it offers in terms of course structure and study options.
Psychology and Counselling student, Jared O'Neil, says the lecturers have helped a lot and are very approachable. One of the things he's found personally helpful is that the lecturers have encouraged him to focus on being passionate about what he's learning rather than just focusing on grades.
Psychology and Counselling student, Courtney Devereux, says a huge factor in her decision to study with ECU is that it is the only university to offer Counselling and Psychology together.
