Inolvidable

Whenever I've seen or heard the Count before he seemed easy going and certain things I've read suggest he was. This put a different perspective on him and I can see why he was able to get so much greatness from his ensembles. He looks as if he could tell people what to do if he had to (a la Rich or Ellington).

starts off with a rhythm changes jam, after which the questioner (leonard feather?) asks "is that how they played the blues in Kansas city". Basie's answer is priceless.

Sonny's brush work. Yikes! Those upstrokes on the underside of the hi-hat are terrific.

The drummer on that first cut... ZOWIE! He's got some serious shit goin' on! Basie is his usual elegant, interesting self and the guitar and bass also just kill in the mix when it's just right for them to do so.

I like his style, relaxed, easy listening./ Not like Tatum orO.P. So many great pianoplayers, Wynton Kelly, Hank Jones.... etc.
