This to me was the best era for Sinatra. Basie and the boys were so truly talented and the music was swing and jazz with a very 60s hipster tempo and Sinatra, just kept getting better, more alive and his voice was better as he matured.

Basie and his men were an engine in this era - like a finely tuned Formula 1 motor; 18 men hitting a note as one ... Sinatra also knew (and admitted it in several interviews) that the Basie band pushed him like no other outfit could because they were stars in their own right - that if he was mailing it in, Lockjaw Davis would stand up and solo right over his vocal. Give Sinatra his props for being willing to play with a band that was willing to hold him accountable like nobody had done since Tommy Dorsey 20 years earlier.

When I was a teen ,I thought that was the corniest music ever made. Now at my ripe old age, I find it's some of the coolest music there is. Old Blue Eyes. Been a professional musician all my life. A few yrs back, I put together the, a one man RatPack tribute show. To studio back tracks. I did really well with it. As a singer,I found it the most challenging, but koooooool music to sing. I was .. Old Brown Eyes. I really miss it. Thanks for the post. Now that I'm old. ..That's Life.

My first acquaintance with Frank was ‘love and marriage’ from ‘our town’ tv production circa 1957. Then my dad bought ‘only the lonely’ great vinyl record we played on our fisher stereo with tubes, diamond needle and vinyl. The best way to hear the best singer ever. In the early sixties I bought two albums with Basie band then in 1966 Sinatra at the sands live album. Ecstatic.

Sonny Payne's drumming is definitive to this music! Sinatra accelerated his affinity for a backbeat swing as a kind of counter to the advent of rock and roll (a rhythm that kinda usurped his place in the 1960s pop pantheon). No matter. Still great. Just check out Sonny's dynamic physicality behind Frank as he plays in the shadows of all these marvelous songs.

There was a slew of songs, patter in between, Frank pulled cup of tea out of the piano and sat down talked about tea for a piece, he introduced Quincy Jones and noted the orchestra for applause... That's an old pro who's been performing for an audience his whole life just about.
