Grab the short course for $1! 👇👇👇 Stop making the 10 most common Mistakes English Learners Make!
www.mmmenglish.com/grammar-ch...
In this course you’ll practise what you learned in this lesson about countable nouns with quizzes and worksheets. PLUS, there are 9 more grammar lessons and quizzes to help you practise!
So many of YOUR English mistakes are related to the way that you use nouns! In this free video lesson, we are going to improve your use of English nouns!
There are two types of nouns - countable and uncountable. Knowing the difference between them and how you can use these types of nouns is really important. It affects how you use:
- articles (a/an/the)
- much/many
- some/any
- a little/a few
- so/such
Learning and understanding how countable and uncountable nouns are used differently in English will DRAMATICALLY improve your grammar!
I've made a worksheet that you can download so you can practice what you learn in this lesson.
This video, we’ll focus on countable nouns. You can check out my lesson on uncountable nouns right here: • Uncountable English No...
What you need to know about countable nouns:
Some nouns are ‘countable’ - very simply, you can count them!
We can say there are three, five or ten of these nouns.
Countable nouns have singular and plural forms.
For example: one lemon (singular), three lemons (plural)
You can use the articles 'a' and 'an', with the singular form of the noun: a glass, an apple, a banana…
What about plural countable nouns?
When you have a plural countable noun, you can use the number to say how many. Or you can use ‘some’ (when you don’t want to be specific about how many)
You can say: some red chillies, some potatoes, two forks and three zucchinis!
Most English nouns are countable nouns. Other examples include: day, week, hour, minute, dollar, task, story, job, coin, accident and appointment.
Countable nouns:
- can be singular or plural.
- use a/an when using the singular form
- Use some when plural, but you don’t want to be specific
- Use the number to be specific!

Hi Emma :). I appreciate your videos and I have used some of them with my classes already. One thing you didn't mention in this video, which is something many of my Chinese adult learners have trouble with in addition to knowing whether a noun is countable or not ("knowledges" comes up a lot, and "vocabularies" is a bit confusing, since it's also a word, albeit with a different meaning), is knowing when to use the singular or plural form of a countable noun, since the Chinese language doesn't have singular or plural forms. As a general rule of thumb, I usually tell them that if there could be more than one, or none, then we use the plural form (e.g., "I don't have any *tasks* to work on right now," or "Do you have any *tasks* you'd like me to work on?"), though this isn't always the case, particularly with idiomatic phrases like, "Do you have a minute?", or in the case that you are asking for just one of something (e.g., "Do you have a pen?").

I work at an American-owned software company in Xi'an, doing communication and cultural training for the staff here. I definitely appreciate your videos and the work you do--thank you :). Sometimes it's hard for me to find content that's suited for my adult learners, particularly because I have a range of ability levels that I work with, from beginners to advanced. Also, it's common in China for younger people to have moderately good English reading and writing skills, but listening and speaking skills tend to be very minimal because it's rarely practiced in most schools (Chinese English teachers often primarily use Chinese when teaching English...) When I look around online for material that might be good for using in listening practice or in quizzes and tests, a lot of it tends to be either too hard or too difficult, or not relevant, but recently I've been able to use some of the videos that you and Lucy have done with pretty good effect. So, again, thanks :)
