Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Ben Hanlin joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.

BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Knowing your 75 times table doesn’t mean you know your 71 times table. 😂

Knowing 75 * 8 is 600 then seeing 568 is 600 - 32 (i.e. 600 - 4 * 8) is what they mean. I doubt I'd be able to see that under the pressure but I was able to get that in 30 seconds whilst watching along.

I love my 75 times table and my 4 times table - then I just subtract one from the other.

I went a bit different for the 568 9-1 for 8 multiply by 75 for 600 then (10-2)4 for 32, Take away from 600 for 568

The 3rd and 4th numbers rounds were super easy, love it when we have some easy numbers. For the second one I got to 2 away with 316. The 1st one I got nowhere on, don't know my 71 times tables and frankly put I can't be bothered to learn them either.

I got that solution by recognising that 8x7 = 56, so 8 into 568 goes 71 times. No need for the 71 times table, but the 8 times table was pretty handy!

You don't need to know your 71s table. If you know your 75s, then you know 75x8 = 600. This is 32 away, but 32 is also divisible by the 8 you used to make 600. So if you subtract the 4 first, you are effectively doing (75 x 8) - (4 x 8). Although in this particular case, you can actually make the second 8 anyway.
