Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. John Virgo joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
#Channel4 #Countdown
BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

I didn't like Colin as a host at first but he's really settling into the role well.

Wow, that is by FAR the easiest Countdown Conundrum I've ever seen. I'm pretty terrible at the Conundrums normally, yet I got this one before Barry buzzed-in, and he buzzed-in within 2 or 3 seconds.

212; there is one other way and it’s divisible by 4 so if you say; 50+3=53 53*8/2=212 Rachel poached my solution for 383 so nothing changed there. 176: there’s a way of making 189-13; 9*3*7=189 189-10-3=176 Rachel even poached my 647 so left it at there. I’m sure there are more solutions to the target.

I: Good easy one to get the game started, including for the contestants. II: I think that's the weakest part of my Numbers Game, when you gotta start adding to odd figures and then somehow dividing it out and you facepalm at the end of it when you see it actually works! III: Took about 45 seconds on this one, different path: 9X2X10 = 180 7-3 = 4 180-4=176 What took the last 10 seconds and then I had to stop was what Rachel showed about getting 11X16. IV: See II. GDI. Could get to 1, and that took extra time.

I did the 176 completely differently. 3*3*10=90 9-7=2 90-2=88 88*2=176 I just focused on the 2 for some reason and came up with this pretty quickly. I know Rachel loves products of 11 etc. though.

@@lilysowden4035 Yeah, I heard that, but you've got to then work out what you get when you divide by 11, then find whether its possible to make that number or not all within 30 seconds. And if it doesn't go to plan, you've got to find something else very quickly. Not really something I'm up to - although I do enjoy the numbers rounds and can often get the simpler solutions without any issues.

Lots of factors work and experience. I guess it's just finding factors to multiply, and sometimes you add/ subtract at the beginning, middle or end of the calculation to solve 98% of the targets xx

Actually 9 times is fairly easy to spot, since the sum of the digits always shares the same remainder after dividing by 9 you can just repeat this till you get a single digit: 6+4+7 = 17 1+7 = 8 So obviously this is 1 short of being a multiple of 9, adding anything one more than a multiple of 9(like 10) would give an answer that's a multiple of 9. Seriously though I think she got it the same way I did. With only 75 as the big number you immediately check the closest multiple: 8 × 75 = 600 9 × 75 = 675 675 looks promising, but it's too big, so try subtracting one of the remaining digits from the 75 first to get closer: 9 × (75 - 2) = 9×75 - 9×2 = 675-18 = 657 And from there it's obvious with an 8 and 2 left we've got a working answer. That's how a lot of these are solved, it's not about knowing 9*73, it's about being able to rewrite it in your head to something you already know to narrow in on something more workable to reach the final answer.

You don't, what I think Rachel does is look at the multiples of 75 nearby, that serve as a building block for the next stage: 647 is next to either 600 or 675, 8 or 9 times 75. 47 isn't possible with 4,5,2,2 so you try 28 with 8,2,2. With 75*9, you can use that 9 by taking off from the 75. Rachel knew she could take off 2*9 by taking 2 from 75. That leaves 10 left which is done with 8 and 2.

In the first numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution at once as well as this quickly after: 50 + 3 = 53 8 / 2 = 4 (or 6 - 2 = 4) 53 x 4 = 212 So I amused myself by spending the rest of the time coming up with this fancy solution that used all the numbers: 50 x 25 = 1250 8 x 3 = 24 24 - 2 = 22 1250 + 22 = 1272 1272 / 6 = 212 In the second numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution but it was the only one. In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, except I made the 16 with 9 + 7 and the 11 with 10 + 3 / 3, but I also had these other solutions: 10 x 9 x 2 = 180 7 - 3 = 4 180 - 4 = 176 Which turns out to have been Colin's solution. I paused the video before he made his comments. 10 x 3 x 3 = 90 90 - 2 = 88 9 - 7 = 2 88 x 2 = 176 10 x 3 = 30 30 + 7 = 37 3 + 2 = 5 37 x 5 = 185 185 - 9 = 176 in the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and I also had this solution with a similar idea, but approaching the target from below: 75 - 2 - 2 = 71 5 + 4 = 9 71 x 9 = 639 639 + 8 = 647 And I think that's it for solutions. You can rewrite my solution in different ways (e.g., 2 + 2 or 2 x 2 and then subtract from 75 instead of 75 - 2 - 2), but it all comes out the same way. I wasn't able to find any other solutions.
