For 576, Rachel often likes doing a perfect square multiplication when possible. Here she did the simpler solution, but it was there, with 9*3-3 = 24, 100/5 + 4 = 24, 24*24 = 576.

For 738, I did 100+10+10 for 120. Times 6 for 720. And then 9 times 2 is 18 and add it on.

Rachel was showing off a bit for 675 (20:47), for 27*25. Another way is 6*(100+8+4) +2+1

Well, given her role in this programme, I suppose she is supposed to show off every now and then. Maybe the producers even want her to do that at least once every episode?☺️

if found the 164 rather quickly in another way 9x25 = 225 & 9*8 = 72 -10 -1 = 61 & 225 - 61 = 164 or you also change the 9*25 & 9*8 by (25-8)*9 = 153 + 10 +1 (than of course you have add the 10 & 1 instead of subtract)

the 490 in a different way: 25-2 =23 x 3 = 69 +1 = 70 x 7 =490 OR 25x3 75 & (9+1)/2 = 5 so 75 - 5 = 70 * 7 = 490 (so basically getting 70 without using the 7)

476 (Wed #1) Knowing that 576 = 24², I instantly factored it as (24 + 10)(24 -10) = 24² -10² = 476 using Difference of Two Squares. 10 + 4 = 14 25 + 6 + 3 = 34

@The Insider , yes, that would be the normal person's way of doing it. I shared mine because my brain is weird, but also because knowing Difference of Two Squares can help people with other problems. It being 100 away from a perfect square instead of, say, 64 or 121 made a difference in why my mind saw it that way.

Monday: For the first round, I got another alternative: 6 + 5 = 11 11 x 4 x 2 x 9 = 792 792 - 25 = 767 The second round is easy. Since 490 = 2 x 5 x 7 x 7, there are a couple of factoring solutions: 25 + 9 + 1 = 35 7 x 2 = 14 35 x 14 = 490 25 - 2 = 23 23 x 3 = 69 69 + 1 = 70 70 x 7 = 490 25 x 2 = 50 50 - 1 = 49 7 + 3 = 10 49 x 10 = 490 The third round is another easy round. Apart from Myles' obvious solution, another easy solution is: 50 + 10 + 1 = 61 61 x 3 = 183 183 + 4 = 187 10 - 1 = 9 9 x 25 = 225 225 - 50 = 175 4 x 3 = 12 175 + 12 = 187 50 + 1 = 51 51 / 3 = 17 25 - 10 - 4 = 11 17 x 11 = 187 The last round ia a tricky round. There is only a single solution: 25 x 5 = 125 125 - 9 - 9 = 107 107 x 6 = 642 642 - 10 = 632

Tuesday: For the first round, it is easy to notice 576 = 24^2, so one possible solution for 24 squared is: 100 / 5 = 20 20 + 4 = 24 9 x 3 = 27 27 - 3 = 24 24 x 24 = 576 For the second round, it is easy to notice that 205 = 41 x 5, so the easiest solution is: 50 - 9 = 41 41 x 5 = 205 In addition, there are several ways that uses only the small numbers: 9 + 8 + 3 = 20 20 x 10 = 200 200 + 5 = 205 9 + 8 = 17 17 x 3 = 51 51 - 10 = 41 41 x 5 = 205 For the third round, in addition to the obvious solution, another possible solution is: 75 x 2 = 150 150 + 1 = 151 151 x 10 = 1510 8 / 4 = 2 15150 / 2 = 755 The last round is too easy. Notice that the target is divisible by 9, so we can just use the small numbers for the target: 6 x 5 = 30 30 - 7 = 23 23 x 3 x 3 = 207 6 x 5 x 7 = 210 210 - 3 = 207

Wednesday: For the first round, it is noticed that 476 = 4 x 7 x 17, so one possible factoring solution is: 25 + 3 = 28 10 + 6 + 1 = 17 28 x 17 = 476 Besides, you can also come with 500: 3 - 1 = 2 2 x 10 x 25 = 500 6 x 4 = 24 500 - 24 = 476 For the second round, it is found that 504 is divisble by 9, so another solution from 504 is: 6 + 3 = 9 6 x 10 = 60 60 - 4 = 56 56 x 9 = 504 504 + 5 = 509 The third one is easy, there are couple of ways without using the 50: 9 - 3 = 6 7 x 6 x 5 = 210 For the last round, the one-aways are: 8 + 1 = 9 6 + 5 = 11 6 x 11 = 66 66 + 1 = 67 67 x 9 = 603 6 + 5 = 11 8 + 1 = 9 9 x 6 = 54 54 + 1 = 55 55 x 11 = 605

Thursday: For the first round, there are a couple of easy solutions: 75 + 9 + 6 - 8 = 82 5 + 5 = 10 82 x 10 = 820 For the second round, there is a simple solution: 5 x 100 = 500 8 - 5 = 3 10 - 1 = 9 3 x 9 = 27 500 + 27 = 527 For the third round, Rita is close to the target: 9 x 9 = 81 81 + 1 = 82 10 - 8 = 2 82 x 2 = 164 The last round is too easy, and there is no point to find any alternatives.

@deepowls
@deepowls Жыл бұрын
She said she used her favorite trick...implying that it was the divisibility by 9 test of adding up the digits. Divide 738 by 9 and you get your 82. The main thing you need to know with your 82 times table is that 82 * 2439 = 199,998 = 2 * 99,999. That means that fractions with 82 as a denominator repeat with a period of 5, starting with the hundredths place due to the factor of 2. 2/82 = 1/41 = 0.02439 02439... 1/81 = 0.0 12195 12195...

Lost the entertainment component, limited to only those who are good at numbers, not enough competitors.i presume the bean counters took over. Tuesday Countdown In the first round, I saw Rachel's solution (although I made the 6 by 3 + 3), but I also had these alternatives: 9 x 5 = 45 100 + 45 = 145 3 / 3 = 1 145 - 1 = 144 144 x 4 = 576 9 x 4 = 36 100 - 36 = 64 64 x 3 x 3 = 576 100 x 3 = 300 300 / 5 = 60 60 + 4 = 64 64 x 9 = 576 In the second round, I had the simplest possible solution: 50 - 9 = 41 41 x 5 = 205 You can also do the same thing as a "five-small": 9 + 8 = 17 17 x 3 = 51 51 - 10 = 41 41 x 5 = 205 And I also had these two: 10 x 8 = 80 (you can also do 10 x 9 and subtract the 5) 80 + 5 = 85 85 x 3 = 255 255 - 50 = 205 9 + 8 = 17 17 x 10 = 170 5 x 3 = 15 170 - 15 = 155 155 + 50 = 205 In the third round, I saw way the two contestants did it, but for the sake of doing something different I also had this: 8 - 2 = 6 75 - 6 = 69 10 + 1 = 11 69 x 11 = 759 759 - 4 = 755 In the fourth round, I saw the contestants' solutions, but also had this "five-small" solution from factoring (23 x 3^2 = 207): 6 x 5 = 30 30 - 7 = 23 23 x 3 x 3 = 207 And I had this solution: 6 x 5 = 30 100 - 30 = 70 70 x 3 = 210 210 - 3 = 207

Wednesday Countdown In the first round, I saw Rita's solution and also had these based on factoring (17 x 7 x 2^2 = 476): 25 + 3 = 28 10 + 6 + 1 = 17 28 x 17 = 34 25 + 6 + 3 = 34 10 + 4 = 14 34 x 14 = 476 25 x 10 = 250 3 - 1 = 2 250 / 2 = 125 125 - 6 = 119 119 x 4 = 476 And I had this one that isn't based on factoring: 3 - 1 = 2 25 x 10 x 2 = 500 6 x 4 = 24 500 - 24 = 476 In the second round, I saw the contestants' solution, but I also had these two by reaching the easily factored interim target of 504: 10 + 4 = 14 14 x 6 x 6 = 504 (or you can do 14 x (6 + 6) x 3 = 504 if you want to use all the numbers) 504 + 5 = 509 10 x 6 = 60 60 - 4 = 56 6 + 3 = 9 56 x 9 = 504 504 + 5 = 509 In the third round, I saw the way the contestants did it because I'm accustomed to doing low-target, one-large problems as "five-small" problems. Another way is: 9 - 3 = 6 7 x 6 x 5 = 210 And if you use the 50, you can do the same thing they did this way: 50 x 7 x 3 = 1050 1050 / 5 = 210 And you can do either 9 - 1 or 7 + 1 = 8 and then: 50 - 8 = 42 42 x 5 = 210 There's nothing in this problem to make it interesting, alas. In the fourth round, I had these solutions for 1 above and 1 below: 6 + 1 = 7 8 x 7 = 56 56 - 1 = 55 6 + 5 = 11 55 x 11 = 605 6 + 5 = 11 11 x 6 = 66 66 + 1 = 67 8 + 1 = 9 67 x 9 = 603

Thursday Countdown In the first round, I saw both contestants' solutions, but I also had these: 8 - 6 = 2 75 x 2 = 150 150 + 9 + 5 = 164 164 x 5 = 820 And believe it or not, this is based on the same idea as the above: 8 + 5 = 13 75 x 13 = 975 975 + 9 = 984 984 x 5 = 4920 4920 / 6 = 820 The logic is that 75 / 6 = 12.5, 13 x 12.5 = 162.5, and therefore I only needed 1.5 to bring it up to 164. That's what 9 / 6 was. In the second round, I saw Matt's solution and also had these: 100 x 5 = 500 10 - 1 = 9 8 - 5 = 3 9 x 3 = 27 500 + 27 = 527 100 - 10 = 90 5 + 1 = 6 90 x 6 = 540 540 - 8 - 5 = 527 In the third round, that _can't_ have been the only way Rachel saw, because as soon as Rita gave her solution she would have seen that this was possible (as indeed I did): 9 x 9 = 81 81 + 1 = 82 10 - 8 = 2 82 x 2 = 164 Not mentioning this fact was clearly Rachel being tactful. Another method is: 25 - 1 = 24 24 x 8 = 192 192 - 10 - 9 - 9 = 164 In the fourth round, it's not worth coming up with another solution. I did 50 x 8 x 2 like everybody else.

Friday Countdown In the first round, I saw Rachel's solution, and also had this related solution: 8 + 1 = 9 100 x 9 x 6 = 5400 5400 / 4 / 2 = 675 I got this first because the ratio between 6 : 8 is 3 : 4, so it was a way of turning 100 into 75, but then of course when I saw that you divide by both 4 and 2 at the end that you could do 2700 / 4 too. However, I also had these two: 100 + 8 + 4 = 112 112 x 6 = 672 672 + 2 + 1 = 675 100 - 4 = 96 8 - 1 = 7 96 x 7 = 672 6 / 2 = 3 672 + 3 = 675 In the second round, I saw the contestants' solution and also had these ones: 7 x 5 = 35 35 + 3 = 38 38 x 25 = 950 7 + 3 = 10 10 x 9 = 90 100 + 90 = 190 190 x 5 = 950 In the third round, I saw Matt's solution and also had these: 4 - 3 = 1 50 - 1 = 49 49 x 9 = 441 441 - 2 = 439 50 - 2 = 48 48 x 9 = 432 432 + 4 + 3 = 439 50 x 2 = 100 100 + 9 = 109 109 x 4 = 436 436 + 3 = 439 In the fourth round, I saw Rachel's way of solving it along with this similar solution, which was probably her "other way": 100 - 10 - 6 - 2 = 82 82 x 9 = 738 However, I also had this "five-small" solution: 10 + 2 = 12 12 x 6 = 72 72 + 10 = 82 82 x 9 = 738 And this solution: 100 - 9 = 91 6 + 2 (or 10 - 2, as you prefer) = 8 91 x 8 = 728 728 + 10 = 738
