Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Rick Edwards joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
Following Countdown's 40th birthday, the show now looks to its next Champion Of Champions series - which will crown the ultimate winner from the past few years.

BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

143: 2 * 75 = 150 10 - 3 = 7 150 - 7 = 143 50 * 3 = 150 9 - 2 = 7 150 - 7 = 143 10 + 3 = 13 9 + 2 = 11 13 * 11 = 143 75 + 50 + 10 + 9 + 2 - 3 = 143 10 * 9 = 90 50 + 3 = 53 90 + 53 = 143 9 * 2 = 18 75 + 50 + 18 = 143 75 * 9 = 675 50 - 10 = 40 665 + 40 = 715 3 + 2 = 5 715 / 5 = 143

Everyone confused Adam didn't play for points on his final pick. I guess he was a little too confident on it, since it's how he won against Tom.

I thought POLYAMBIC was a brilliant guess. It has a clear meaning...though based on the very little I know about poetry, it wouldn't be a particularly useful word. The Numbers rounds were rather boring with the 673 being the only moderately challenging one.

In the first round, I saw the contestants' solution and you could also do these similar solutions: 100 - 2 - 1 = 97 97 x 7 = 679 679 - 5 = 679 100 - 5 = 95 95 x 7 = 665 4 x 2 = 8 665 + 8 + 1 = 674 In the second round, I saw James' solution, but also had this one: 75 x 7 = 525 25 + 1 = 26 26 x 6 = 156 525 + 156 = 681 681 - 8 = 673 In the third round, I saw both contestants' solutions and also had these: 100 - 9 - 7 = 84 84 x 10 = 840 840 - 6 = 834 100 x 9 = 900 7 / 7 = 1 10 + 1 = 11 11 x 6 = 66 900 - 66 = 834 And this fancy solution: 100 + 7 = 107 107 x 9 = 963 963 + 10 = 973 973 x 6 = 5838 5838 / 7 = 834 It occurred to me that I had the means of making 139 x 7 while holding one of the 7s back to divide by. In the final numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions, but you can do a "four small" by factoring the target (13 x 11 = 143): 10 + 3 = 13 9 + 2 = 11 13 x 11 = 143

(100 × 9) - {[10 + (7 / 7)] × 6} = 900 - 66 = 834

For the first round, there is another way to obtain the target from 700: 7 x 100 = 700 5 + 1 = 6 6 x 4 = 24 24 + 2 = 26 700 - 26 = 674 For the second round, I got an alternative solution similar to the contestants' solution in the first round: 75 + 25 = 100 100 - 6 - 1 = 95 95 x 7 = 665 665 + 8 = 673 For the third round, an easy straight-forward solution is: 100 - 9 - 7 = 84 84 x 10 = 840 840 - 6 = 834 The final round is too easy. It can be easily obtained with the four small numbers: 10 + 3 = 13 2 + 9 = 11 13 x 11 = 143
