#SayNOtoROE
Herring biomass has fallen from 130,000 tons to an estimated 56,000 tons in the last four years in the Strait of Georgia.
Despite public outrage and internal scientific recommendations urging a reduction of the allowable quota, Fisheries and Oceans Canada continues to mismanage this essential and fragile backbone of our coastal inland sea.
Conservancy Hornby Island members describe the arrival of the first commercial fishing vessels of the season, and express concern at DFO's mismanagement and lack of leadership at a time where herring, a critically important species continues toward the brink of collapse.
Thank you to our colleagues and friends at
SeaLegacy, ecologyst, Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards and Pacific Wild for coming together in defence of herring.
