The way I’ve always looked at countering in the early game is if I’m gonna play the card in the next two turns I won’t counter, but into the mid game I try and expect the face a lot of 7k attacks so counter the 6k ones

Ive definitely seen people countering out of swings too early, even when they have 5 life still. To try and dissuade this, I try and frame it like so: if you expect your opponent to swing at your life the same amount in a future turn, take the life for the draw. So if the opponent is swinging 5k at your life and you can counter with 1k and you still have 5 life, then its way more likely that your opponent wants to use all their don to play characters to the board on future turns, and so its likely that another 5k swing will come later. You can use that same 1k counter to get out of that future attack, and now you have drawn from life early to give yourself more plays, or given yourself more counter to protect your characters. However if you are at 2 life and face a 5k swing, you are more likely in a situation where the opponent can attach don to characters to just try and rush you down, and that future 5k swing may never come, so you have to think about whether you want to counter this swing a lot harder. There are exceptions to this; leaders like Reiju, Boa and Rebecca being major ones as they want to control hand size for leader/character ability, but its a good rule of thumb to get you thinking on how to view your life as a resource
