This is the first song I really got into on the album. Everybody I shared it with thought I was mental or depressed, or whatever. This song is BEAUTIFULLY HONEST.

The 'new' verse at the end is phenomenal! "Sometimes it snows in April. Sometimes the skies are grey. Sometimes it all looks so familiar to me, and sometimes it's just so fucking strange. So can't you hear me cause I'm screaming, and I did not go outside yesterday. Don't wake me; please don't wake me cause I was dreaming, and I might just stay inside again today. I don't go out much these days. Sometimes I stay inside all day."

@@owenco2273 even being aware of that, the way he belts it in Perfect Blue Buildings chokes me up every single time. Can't help it. And actually, "Sometimes it snows in April" is the title of a Prince song, whereas everything between that and "Can't you hear me" I think is original to the live cut. I *think.* Also, Recovering the Satellites is one of their best albums.

This song has always represented depression to me. I have read comments on other videos of this song that says it's about addiction. My depression is like"a dead man trying to get out" and often "I wanna get me a little oblivion" and the best thing for me to do is "keep myself away from myself and me". I'm starting to self-isolate again and I don't go outside all day when I have days off. My depression is a struggle between one part of me trying to give up and one part struggling to survive. Adam Duritz describes it perfectly in this song.
@josephsmith7290 Жыл бұрын
I understand depression too. It creeps into my dark soul on unexpected times. Adam Duritz is emotionally naked and very in touch with his deep insecurities. I value music that makes me cry as well as smile. August & Everything After represented a strange, familiar place in time. I've seen Counting Crows once live but it wasn't what I wished for. This '90s album captures the innocence as well as the moodiness of being in relationships that falter. 😘 .

This song (and album) were central to the lowest point of my life. Between August and Everything After and Peter Gabriel’s Secret World Live lie almost every bad memory I’d love to erase. Anna Begins brings me so much pain but I have a sadistic obsession with listening to it.

Just down the street from your hotel, baby I stay at home with my disease And ain't this position familiar, darling Well, all monkeys do what they see Help me stay awake, I'm falling... Down on Virginia and La Loma Where I got friends who'll care for me You got an attitude of everything I ever wanted I got an attitude of need Help me stay awake, I'm falling... [CHORUS:] Asleep in perfect blue buildings Beside the green apple sea Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby Try to keep myself away from me (myself and) me It's 4:30 A.M. on a Tuesday It doesn't get much worse than this In beds in little rooms in buildings in the middle of these lives which are completely meaningless Help me stay awake, I'm falling... [CHORUS] I got bones beneath my skin, and mister... There's a skeleton in every man's house Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody There's a dead man trying to get out Please help me stay awake, I'm falling...
