Is It Really Niantic's Fault for Pokémon GO's problems?

Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.
Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

I am convinced now niantic want their own stand alone game that is basically Pokémon go without paying royalties. So they do this incompetence to make sure Pokémon go never ever gets too big.

Ingress. It was Pokémon Go before Go, and it is still around. Go got more popular because it has the Pokemon brand behind it and a collection mechanic.

Niantic does not have an open dialogue with their fan base with their other games either. There other games are also plagued with problems. Niantic would fail without pogo.

Im pretty sure the Pokémon company didn’t tell niantic to completely ignore all communication with its players. It’s all niantic. Niantic said they would improve communication but that only lasted one post.

In comparison, Pokemon sleep's team has been super on the ball with communication and bringing in requested features. It's a great experience as a F2P player, unlike PokeGo which I quit a while ago.

It’s both the companies. Pokemon company has not put love into the franchise, but if were as you say it is, Niantic would’ve leaked long ago that their hands were tied by the Pokemon company. So it’s both of them.

I think the pokemon company has most of the say what is done with the pokemon but it's niantic fault with most of the Decisions they have made for this game. We have seen how great this game can be now we have 3/4 of all the stuff that made each day better to play gone.

Niantic not listening to reasonable feedback, not acknowledging us, yes thats their fault. Nintendo(which basically owns Pokemon) has historically never listened to their player base, so that tracks. Its the same for a lot of developers, not just Niantic. There isnt much i can say beyond that. Which is sad. We all need to remember Pokemon Go is just a product and a means to make money to both Nintendo and Niantic. So if they just continue ignore us and the game closes due to their failings, something else will rise to take its place.

I don't have high expectations for Niantic, however, they promised years ago to have better communication with the community. But as soon as they get any negative feedback from the community, they just clam up and refuse to have a dialogue about it. They are fair weather only when it comes to communicating.

Based on S&V, BDSP & now pokemon go the only common link is the Pokemon company. Yes Niantic is the face of the game but Pokemon ultimately signs off on the direction of every game

well.... considering they are just every m.g.c. in recent history. taking shortcuts, releasing content before thoroughly testing, not fixing prior bugs and issues, not listening to the players concerns, avoiding context various means, being willfully ignorant. yes it really is their fault.

They don’t deserve slack. You can’t worry about being negative if they are always negative towards us. Why are we always the ones that are having to be positive and they could continue being negative and not hear us? I think there is some portion of "blame" to lay at the feet of TPC (and how PGo might "just" be a marketing vector to them); but when I read interviews Niantic do give, I find Niantic's paradigm for PGo to just be very alien to the gameplay. Ie I really don't feel like Niantic is designing for play game, they are designing for their "vision". On Niantic communication: I sincerely don't believe that Niantic would change any game mechanics based on player feedback; Comms is just advertisement, so just announcements it is.

The main line Pokemon games have lacked quality, innovation, polish, and substance for several entries now. Not surprised laziness, corner cutting, and greed has plagued spinoff mobile games like PoGo. Big name Nintendo games seem to be generally known for quality more than quantity but I think Pokemon has been an exception. If Nintendo is this lax with what they let the Pokemon Company and Gamefreak? get away with resulting in an embarrassing product, similar sentiment probably affects how the Pokemon Company oversees Niantic.

well, the problems are the suits, in offices from both parties. people who don't play the game and get a paycheck. Overall Niantic has no excuse what is given to them, and it seems they fail over and over again. raids don't run well, getting kick out of the app just taking a picture or game freezing just spinning the poke stop. Not beginning able to load the game in the timely manner and having to drive a mile just to load game since it called pogo should be done anywhere. my issue is why do they care how I play the game, it a game right and everyone plays it differently, it an open game with no rules. regardless Niantic still has to preform and have the game running well period! am really tired of support, get the bots and never getting anything resolve since you have to give them everything under the moon since they can't look at what happen with the game.

I do think it's killed the events I mean at home earlier I saw seasonal spawns and non event spawns, feels like there no purpose to play now apart from com days 🙃

This game has drop drastically ever since the remote raids nerve there lack of communication and the problem is they make a stupid update and make the game 10x worse the bug the glitches when they drop new update like biomes and still don't care to even respond to there community they care about money though or big event they want you to spend your hard earned money for them and people do so that's why this game stay afloat.

I would place at least some of the blame with Niantic - all their other licensed games flopped, likely for the same reasons pokego is being criticized.

I'm going to point out that Nintendo has over the past 2 years has fucked over the smash community and pushed out several poorly optimized even outside the pokemon company. More and more companies are going full Disney without having the respect or building it. Nintendo and square enix especially, are stupidly pushing to new new new without thought to the reality of their fan bases. The pokemon company has been hamstrung for about 5 years. Every publisher has been over correcting since COVID started and the strangling oversight has cracked both development cycles and the trust from everyone involved. The make or break moments for this year in gaming will be black ops 6 and the new assassins creed. There's absolutely no reason right now to think that any designers or developers at or near a given project want this kind of poor to absolutely dog shit experience, my personal experience with this sort of thing is entirely at the publishers feet, pre forsaken destiny 2, ea forcing an all in for the Jedi series nearly at the expense of apex, Nintendo not playing to the switches strengths nor giving any of the developers at any level the necessary time to fully understand and tune the little things. These massively bloated groups that are pure accounting types that only want big number to get bigger have really harmed the industry at large in a massive way and need to get a reality check or the medium is going to fragment in a massively unpleasant way for everyone involved. Niantic doesn't need to do a ton of work for most of the qol since imo, it's a lot of things like permanent 2 free raid passes working 1/2 hatch distance in to a season that way the would have the time to rebalance the remote raid passes, seek to rerun or build new apex research, rebuild the pvp cycle and work to finding and fixing bugs before the summer season gets underway. I hope that it doesn't take more than a year to polish this game there's far fewer big bugs and unbalanced things in this game than in season 7-8 league of legends it would basically kill the growth the game has had if it does.

I don't believe it for a second! To me that sounds like blaming others. I can't imagine that Nianatic needs a commitment from Nitendo or Pokemon Company for everything in order to enforce something. If this were the case, then all processes would take significantly longer until something gets a commitment... but the opposite is the case, we get events continuously that disappoint us or changes in the game that are supposed to advance the game. So yes, it is really niantic´s fault for all the problems! Period.

What do you mean? Niantic is the one that regulates and updates Pokemon Go and is the sole game development company doing so. If any bad changes are made to their game of course it would be their fault. What sort of question is this?

It's Niantic.. you definitely don't play any other pokemon games ppl are pissed With GF and the PC because games are rushed and all the Broken glitches and visuals Niantic went woke and just want the money it's Niatic PC and GF will tell them what pokemon they can release and story wise content but it's all on Niantic

I am a 2016 player. I am now 61 years old. I am level 50, I play daily still, do the walking when the weather cooperates and pay for things sparingly because gym coins just aren't enough and I am blessed to be able to afford to spend a little on my hobby. What's concerning to me is that, at the slow drip of releasing new pokemon or shinies, I will be dead before I complete my pokedex. I would like to see more levels, more medals to work on, and at least 1 or 2 new releases per month. I understand that there are a lot of newer players and they need Kanto, but geez. As for the avatars, if they just tweaked the heads a bit bigger and the hands a bit smaller, I'm ok with my body. In real life, my hand does not span my entire head.
