In case you didn't know; we are actually building this reactor in the south of France. It's taking the combined effort and resources of 37 countries and, if successful, one reactor could power all of the U.S. (meaning the one in France should, theoretically, provide power for all of the EU. It will use nuclear fusion, combining hydrogen atoms until they form helium, the most stable gas we know of. The risk of meltdown is non-existent, if the reactor fails to maintain the temperature needed for fusion it'll just lose the heat and we're left with hydrogen and a very large and expensive storage unit for it. If it does reach fusion temperature, than we have a truly unlimited and clean fuel source.
@MDP17022 жыл бұрын
Where do you get it from that it could power all of the US? The current one being built would if successfull produce a fraction of a current large fission power plant. At this moment it isn't even clear that it will generate enough power to offset the power needed to make it function, and even if that happens whether it can be made economical.

@@huangshabaizhan326 China's tokamak is useless because you don't have the technology to heat ions. China's tokamak only heats up electrons. On the other hand, our tokamak raises the temperature by heating ions. That's the difference between you and us.
@one.two.three.2 жыл бұрын
@@huangshabaizhan326 To put it simply, heating the electrons is necessary to maintain the temperature of the plasma for a long time, and heating the ions is literally necessary to occur nuclear fusion. If you can't heat the ions, you don't even need to heat the electrons. Nuclear fusion is a reaction that occurs when ions are heated to more than 100 million degrees. If the temperature of the ions isn't maintained at 100 million degrees or more for a long period of time, the nuclear fusion won't occur in the first place.
