Fun Fact: The first shot America Fired during the war was a 5 inch shell fired from USS Ward at a Japanese Midget Submarine attempting to scout out Pearl Harbor. The shot was fired by members of the Minnesota Naval Reserve from the Ward's No. 3 gun. The shot would land just at the base of the sub's coming tower, sinking it. The Ward would go on to become a armed transport during the war and was sunk in a Kamikaze attack. However the gun used during the sinking of the sub was removed in a refit and now sits outside the Minnesota State Capitol, commemorating my state's contribution to the opening of the war.

Yep, not sure why people think NATO existed before WW2, we had no real reason nor requirement to help Europe, the fact that we ended up sending millions was an act of huge selflessness, not "being late" as many ungrateful people or soviet dividers put it. Now we do, and I'm glad we're all allies, it just sometimes feels like some allies fall for kremlin propaganda that implies the US was "late" to ww2, can't be late when you're not in an official alliance, and US was sick of European wars. I'm glad we ended up joining and saving the world, but it's almost like some people feel they were entitled to it and mad we didn't do it sooner, despite FDR doing everything he could to help Eurasia. At that point, sending millions of people to save other people on a whole different continent was crazy and unprecedented, even today it's still crazy, I don't remember any other continent sending millions of its own people to save another continent. I guess lots of Indians, Australians, New Zealanders, and Canadians served in WW2, so maybe that's the closest example? But they were all in the same empire, we helped completely different civs, and sent way more to help them. So yah, I still think to this day what the US did was unprecedented, instead of late, we were pioneers in a new world where democracies help/protect each other.

Historical inaccuracies: 1. The modern Chinese flag wasn’t the official flag until after the civil war 2. The Japanese didn’t go to war with the French and British until the pearl harbour attack 3. The queen wasn’t the head of state until after WW2 4. The nuke was invented in 1945 (this is 1941) 5. The rising sun flag was never really the national flag in WW2. They still used the modern day Japanese flag, but the circle on the flag was a bit darker

I think this severely under-represents how massively America aided the allies before "officially" joining the war. From the start, they provided tons of nonmilitary supplie, then eventually military supplies. In fact, it is very similar to what America has been doing for Ukraine for years now. We have now mastered the art of helping allies at war without going to war.
@medical-cyanide1526 Жыл бұрын
If memory serves Pearl Harbor was just like the perfect fucking storm brewing on the day of the attack. The attack happened on a Sunday I think, so the ships and bases were running with basically skeleton crews as a majority of servicemen were in chapel or off base. The plans were all laid out on the air field because the base commander was afraid of sabotage or something, ammo and what not was also Uber lock and key I think so it took time for AA to respond. And much more I’m likely forgetting. But also in the sense the Japanese kinda messed up the attack I think, while they did heavily damage and sink several ships I don’t think they hit fuel depots, the sub base, or the dry docks I think. So for the most part it did slow down American response and limit resources, it didn’t take too long to at least get things moving again. Interesting side note, if I remember correctly many historians argue that if America jumped in sooner in either world war America would’ve probably wouldn’t of had the same impact as it did, if not actually hinder it. For the First World War for example, active duty servicemen numbers were actually quite low as well as industry, since America took a bit to enter the war it gave time for industry to slow shift to a more war focused one. It also greatly improved economy overall I think
