I think a video on "surprising friendships between countries" might also be interesting. For example, it's obvious that Czech Republic is really good friends with Slovakia, nothing surprising about that, but it can be surprising to many that Czech Republic and Israel are also very good friends...

Probably one of the most bewildering friendships I've seen is with Israel and India. They're two COMPLETELY different cultures and faiths, vastly different in size and in different world regions, yet they have developed extremely close and warm ties since each got their independence in the late 1940s.

In the Vietnam- Cambodia section, the video kind of missed out an important part of the war in 1979- Vietnam intervened to kick out Pol Pot and put and end to the genocide that was starting to spill over their borders. Which then led to the odd situation where during the 80s the US, the UK and China, were all supporting Pol Pot and his former government, against Vietnam and the USSR who were supporting the Anti-KR government.

He should add more detail in that part. For like more reason why Cambodian hate Vietnam, here: -Anti-Vietnamese sentiment made by Cambodian pro-US politician (Sam Rainsy) -The lost of the Khmer Krom (Southern Vietnam) -The Vietnamization of Cambodia during 17-20 Century. (The reason why Pol Pot attacked Vietnam) -The support of Khmer rouge during Vietnam war

Vietnam and Cambodia have always had a checkered history. People often point to the 20th century, but the reality is that Cambodia has traditionally viewed Vietnam as "the hereditary enemy", with the Vietnamese as an expansionist people who have annexed eastern Cambodia. Historically speaking, Vietnam viewed the Khmers as uncivilized barbarians. This difference is all the more evident if you consider how Vietnam's culture has Sinosphere roots, while Cambodia, like Laos and Thailand, is culturally more indianized.

The political status quo is not stopping people from all singing while holding hands under the stars, it's stopping us from killing each other. Thank you for explaining it in a clear and interesting way. I really enjoy your videos! Another region that is rarely discussed: Central Asia. I’m partially Uzbek and Tajik from my mother’s side. Growing up I’ve always been told that Uzbeks are culturally closer to Tajiks than Kazakhs and Kyrgyz people, despite Uzbekistan being a Turkic nation and Tajikistan being Iranic/Persian. Both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have each other’s ethnic people living as minority groups - probably due to former borders, empires and history. Tajiks still claim Uzbek land (cities of Samarkand and Bukhara) to be theirs while Uzbeks say they have lost a piece of their land (Sughd region (with cities of Khujand and Istaravshan) to Tajikistan. I know it sounds very complex. Also, when it comes to clothing pattern and cuisine, these two countries fight over where the national dish Plov and Adras/Ikat pattern originate from. Personally, I believe they all originate from Uzbekistan, while Chakan pattern being Tajik. I may get a lot heat for saying this, but that’s how the rest of the world know it too 😅 Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan don’t have the best ties either, but gladly the Central Asian countries have not been in war with each other and don’t seem to hold grudge the same way as the countries described in this video.

Argentina's hatred towards the UK goes back to 1806, when they tried to invade Buenos Aires during the Napoleonic Wars. They tried again in 1807 (also invading Montevideo), being unsuccessful both times. This actually strongly helped to create the Creoles patriotism that would declare independence in 1810, as the Creole militias repelled both invasions with little to no help from the Spanish Army.

That was quite good to have other rivalries in South America being covered apart from the ones of which I am already aware, between Peru and Chile and, by extension, Chile and Bolivia, in counterpoint to Peru and Ecuador and Bolivia and Paraguay, as evidenced by the Peruvian-Ecuadorian War of 1941 and the Chaco War of 1932 - 1935, which perhaps get overlooked in Europe. I'll never forget reading the words 'Peruvian Blitzkrieg' looking into the Peruvian-Ecuadorian War, two words which I never expected to see next to each other! I run the Fan Blog ('Bananas For Breakfast') to Valérie Čižmárová - who, incidentally, recorded a tribute song ('Huascarán') to fifteen mountaineers from Czechoslovakia who perished in the Ancash Earthquake of 31st May 1970 in Peru - who was a Hungarian-Slovak, despite performing virtually all of her recorded repertoire in Czech in Prague, so perhaps you could look at Hungarian-Slovak rivalries to go with Hungarian-Romanian ones sometime, which themselves led to another largely forgotten war of the 1930s/1940s in the spring of 1939, which was strange to see between two notional allies of Hitler's Germany.

I know this is just a quick overview video, but I'd say that you tend to misattribute and oversimplify the starts of conflicts, e.g. for India-Pakistan, the main source of the dispute was originally a religious one (hence why the huge population exchange), with Kashmir being a symptom of that, not the other way around. As for Armenia-Azerbaijan, even though the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in its modern form began in 1988, ethnic tensions have been around since the mid-19th century with rising nationalism + discovery of oil in Baku and subsequent social inequality.

true with the India-Pakistan conflict there is a lot of things that caused the conflict. Basically initially Kashmir was an independant princely state following independence however, from what i understand Pakistan later tried to annex the country and Kashmir to India for help and India agreed on the basis that Kashmir would join India. India did help yet, they only were able to gain what became Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan claims the area based on religion as the area has a muslim majority population wheras India claims it based on the agreement made, personally i would prefer either Kashmiri independance or it joining India over Pakistan based on this agreement as i do realise that the agreement itself could be identified by some as invalid based on the circumstances.

@Lyallpuriya Жыл бұрын
@@paintingdreams290 The Raja of Jammu & Kashmir had already signed an agreement with Pakistan to either remain neutral (not joining any of the country) or later join Pakistan with some later agreed terms & conditions. The Dogra Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir violated that agreement by signing an instrument of accession with India. Secondly, Pakistan didn't invade the state of Jammu & Kashmir! A full-on invasion means one sovereign nation-state invading another sovereign nation state with its national army, like Russia invaded Ukraine with its national army in 2022. What Indians call "Pakistani invasion" was not the official invasion of the state of Jammu & Kashmir by the Pakistani government, rather it was the Pashtun & Tanoli tribesmen from the erstwhile FATA region also known as "Tribal Areas", who went into the state passing through Swat & Amb, which were other 'semi-independent' princely states just like Jammu & Kashmir, bordering J&K and FATA, to assist the local rebels who succeeded their territories from the Maharaja. Pakistani government, in 1948, didn't declare any war on Jammu & Kashmir. Not a single Pakistani soldier set foot in the state before 22 October, 1948. Pakistan invaded the state after Maharaja signed the instrument with the Indian government, which was the clear violation of an agreement that he already made with the Pakistani government before, to remain neutral until the further negotiation to join Pakistan comes to any conclusion. As Pakistan saw this as a violation of the agreement by the Maharaja, Pakistan invaded the state and boosted its support to Muslim separatists in the state who were demanding to end the minority-led monarchy in the state and later join Pakistan. Jammu & Kashmir was one of the 567 princely states of the British colonial India. They were in a subsidiary alliance with the British government under which the individual states will have internal autonomy within their states but the Viceroy of India (representative of the British monarch in India) will be responsible for the foreign affairs of all those princely states. Princely states were 'semi-independent' as they had autonomy to rule their states whatever the way they wanted but all of their foreign affairs will be the responsibility of the British government. More than 78% population of the state of Jammu & Kashmir was Muslim while 15% was Hindu. So, it was a Muslim majority state in 1947 but it was ruled by a Hindu Dogra Maharaja. From 1846-1948, an Apartheid system was established in the state by the Maharaja just like an apartheid system in South Africa where minority was ruling the country through oppressing the majority. In the state of Jammu & Kashmir, the ruling dynasty was a Hindu Brahmin from the Dogra-Punjabi ethnicity. So, the royal family ruling the state was a minority within a minority in the state. To understand the politics of the state you need to understand that Jammu & Kashmir was (and still is) one of the most ethnically, linguistically and religiously diverse states in the Indian subcontinent. Despite being 78% Muslim majority state, it also had a very strong non-Muslim and non-Kashmiri minorities i.e. Hindus (15%), Buddhists (4%), Sikhs and others (3%). On the ethnolinguistic/racial side, the population was divided into Dardic (Kashmiris, Shins, Kohistanis, etc.) with 43%, Punjabis (Pahari-Pothwari, Pahari-Dogri, Hindkowans, Gurjars, etc.) with 31%, Western Tibetans (Ladakhi-Baltis) with 12% and others (Pamiris, Brusho, Pashtuns, etc.) with nearly 14% population. Overwhelming majority of Hindus in the state belonged to the upper castes like Punjabi-Dogra Brahmins and Kashmiri Pandits. There were many discriminatory laws against Muslims in the state such as Muslims were completely banned from purchasing weapons while Hindus and Sikhs were allowed to own firearms, Muslims had to pay more taxes than Hindus and Sikhs, there were more limits on Muslims of the state to purchase property than Hindus. Over 100% police of the state was composed of Hindus and Sikhs. Not a single Muslim was allowed to join the police. Muslims (from all backgrounds) of the state had been protesting against these discriminatory laws and oppression and were trying to overthrow the monarchy through an armed rebellion since the early 1930's. Their struggle against the Maharaja was much older than the Pakistan movement though it was heavily influenced by the Pakistan movement of 1930's & 40's and the Two-Nation Theory which asserted the notion that the Muslims of the British India were a separate nation (civilisation) than Hindus. To make a balance in India and to save it from a Civil war after the British withdrawal, two states must be created from the British Indian territories (provinces, states and agencies): one a Muslim majority state/dominion (Pakistan) and the other a Hindu majority state/dominion (Hindustan). Many Muslims supported this movement as they believed that in order to safeguard their interests and to protect their identity & culture, they must have a separate homeland where they were in a numerical majority. This principle is essential for the right of self-determination of any nation. Many Hindu nationalists also believed that in order to protect their Hindu identity, culture and national interests, Hindus must be in a numerical majority (Hindutva). Many Muslims from the state of Jammu & Kashmir started supporting the Pakistan movement and demanded that the whole state must join Pakistan. Maharaja knew the ground reality of his state. That's why he made an agreement with the Pakistani government to 'remain neutral until further negotiations to join the Pakistani Dominion comes to any conclusion'. With unnecessary delays by the Maharaja, most of the Muslim population rebelled against his rule. They were extremely successful in defeating the forces of the state and annexing them with the Dominion of Pakistan. Almost 36% territory of the state of Jammu & Kashmir joined Pakistan this way. Many British officers, who were stationed there, also supported this rebellion. After losing several districts and agencies of the state, the Maharaja called it as 'interference from Pakistan in his state' and called India for help. Later India, annexed the territory by signing an instrument of accession with the Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir, which Pakistan to this day considers 'illegal'. Even Kargil and Leh were also liberated by the Muslim freedom fighters of the state but were later occupied by India while some other parts like Kotli and Poonch were later occupied by Pakistan after the war started b/w India & Pakistan. Later, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru went to the UN and called for the ceasefire and demanded the UN to solve the Kashmir issue. It was the Indian government that brought Kashmir issue to the United Nations in 1949, and then in Jan 1949, UN called a ceasefire and created the famous Line of Control (LoC) b/w India and Pakistan. India and China went to a war in 1962, which resulted in Indian defeat and China occupying a large chunk of the Indian occupied territory of the state. China also have some overlapping claims in that region (Shaksgham valley, Fukche valley and Aksai Chin). Since then, 55% of the state is occupied by India, 30% by Pakistan and almost 15% by China.

The Indians and Pakistanis are of one origin. The so-called (Pakistan) separated from India, because of the Islamic religion, which forbids and criminalizes living with others. And the name (Pakistan) means the land of the pure, as opposed to the country of the filthy who separated from it, and the policy of (divide and rule) the British colonialism played a role in igniting that.

In the India & Pakistan topic, you forgot to mention the Radcliffe line. It's part of the reason why Pakistan has claims on Kashmir other than the basis of it's muslim majority population. Basically the British viceroy Lord Mountbatten hired one of his friends (Sir Cyrill Radcliffe) to draw the boundary line between India & Pakistan. That guy hadn't even stepped on South Asian soil before and he got to draw a fragile boundary line between the two countries. He was hired because the British viceroy at that time had personal ties with the Indian founding fathers including Nehru due to which he had pro-indian bias. This way he gave so many exclaves & districts to India which were supposed to go to Pakistan like ferozepur & even kolkata who's Achoot caste hindu population were opting to join India at one point. When it came to kashmir, Pakistan already had enough with this injustice & it's Pashtun tribesmen went in to liberate the area from Mahraja Hari Singh who was busy doing brutal massacres against the Muslim population in the state and other areas.
