To everyone in the comment section saying "What about Biafra?". That country declared independence in 1967, and rejoined Nigeria in 1970. It doesn't exist anymore. This video talks about countries that declared independence but isn't recognized by anyone in present day. Not 50 years ago.

Sorry nigeria has had two other countries that attempted breaking out but was unsuccessful apart from the ogoni land. Bakassi peninsula attempted it but after a reaffirmation of the offshore territory between Nigeria and Cameroun it was settled and bakassi if I spelt that well remained in Nigeria. Then the republic of Biafra quite successfully declared independence, minted her currencies, had a flag and a governmental system then ruled under Lt general odumegwu ojukwu, who led biafrans into a civil war with Nigeria that didn't end well for the biafrans. Due to untrained soldiers and lack of access to heavy military weapons like tanks and jets as Nigeria had kept majority of their military machineries off the biafran regions before the war so the biafrans being out of substantial weapons, had to fight the war with locally made bombs and limited guns as there were more soldiers to fight than the weapons available. Eventually they lost and was reintegrated into Nigeria. Though recently they've started making noises about seeking to be granted independence.

Honestly, Azawad existing would probably make Malis situation better. Africa is dominated by Islam in the north, but in the south its actually the christians posing the majority, with Mali being right on the border. And well, i think we can all agree that a country having a cultural rift like that, especially if its in africa, tends not to be a good thing for the country.
