A heartbreaking true story about the demise of American family farmers. Today our produce comes from all parts of the world, picked weeks before it's fully ready for picking. At one time Santa Clara Valley in Northern California was known as the bread- basket of the world where a variety of fruits and vegetables were grown. Here many canneries existed year- round contributing to the valley's economic prosperity and a great place for summer jobs for high school and college students. That rich earth was plowed under to build millions of homes for an expanding population headed westward to make their fortunes. Today the Valley is called Silicon Valley where housing is too expensive for many hard-working middle class citizens to buy. In my opinion, this is not progress for many Americans but an example of greed.

Because we have too many G.O.P.s in rural areas who want to see more housing tracts built as well as factories and warehouses. For starters, if more factory and warehouse owners would use railroads 🛤 as transportation, or possibly independent or self-employed semi truckers known as owner-operators instead of using inland waterways everything would truly be normal in our nation. For example, inland waterways often intersect with highway bridges that are paid for with tax dollars. Therefore, both the railroads and the independent semi truckers are the better choices for the transportation of farm products.

I feebly explained that I didn't vote for him, and no one that I associated with voted for him, and that in the same State that he was Governor in (My State) he was collectively hated by most of the population because of his racist policies, ultra establishment rhetoric, and his war mongering tone during the Vietnam War. Several farmers in Eastern Kentucky lost their land in the late 1960s to early 1970s all because it was near the Ragland Oil Field, which was forced by the administrations of U.S. Presidents Johnson and Nixon to cease production of crude oil in order for the Army Corps of Engineers to build Cave Run Lake so sporting fishermen would have a place to catch trophy sized muskies.

Hi Mike, great comment. See my following comment. I come from a Northern Irish family, they too have suffered by loan sharks and bad European Union policies. One of the best reasons for the UK to leave the EU is the unfair subsidies given to certain countries, at the expense of others.I had a small farm in Portugal, I could not sell my oranges, because the Spanish farmers got 50% more for their oranges by subsidy, also they did not have to pay for water. When I visited the local supermarket in Portugal, all the fruit and veg came from Spain. But if you drove along the Algarve, you would see many small farms with the fruit rotting on the trees for lack of water etc. Because my Uncles farm in Ireland is small, they get no subsidy, but if he had the same land in France, he would get huge help from the EU coffers. .

Alright. This movie needs to be ranked as one the top movies ever made, along with “Race Against The Harvest, 1987”. I was born and raised on a farm, and grew up exactly like the family did in this movie. Everything is precise and accurately displayed. I haven’t teared up or felt pain through a movie before, well maybe once… but I can empathize with this one. Even had a Gleaner combine! Again, perfectly portrayed and more realistic than I expected, and my expectations are almost impossible to meet when it comes to movies and such. I remember this period in time for agriculture. One day your a millionaire (or at least on paper) and the next you are broke/bankrupt. And it literally seemed about that quick. The cash just didn't want to flow with the depressed commodity prices. Banks were throwing money at you one day and then seemed like only would lend to you if you had sufficient cash and did not need a loan. Some survived and unfortunately some did not, depending on your uniquely individual situation. I know we really had to tighten up and thank God we made it. Dad would tell me, "we are broke and you just do not know it". Dad, being older and thru more, would also say: "If we can just hang on, it will get better"(just had to ask yourself how long/when) and "in farming you have to be in the game when things get better to cash in on the upswing".

The way it was ...... Now its the money that takes care of the farmers, its the commerce worldwide. Here in France, where i'm a farmer, and in the Netherlands where i was a farmer, things are close to the point this movie is about. With the difference, farmers nowdays are one eachothers concurent, and the debts are much bigger! In France today, more than one farmer par day kills him/herself every day. The onlything that interrest the money (and by that the gouvernment) is the agriculture production, and young farmers are obliged to grow bigger, or leave.

Right on Michael 🙏🏻 My Mom was always growing something edible in our tiny suburban backyard. It doesn't take too much land to grow fresh, and plant fruit trees. I cried when she passed away, because although she was hard-hearted, and always had to have her way, she provided for our nice foodstuffs. We had tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, zucchini, a fig tree, persimmon tree, orange tree, apple tree, grapefruit tree, and a cherry tree on the lot that was originally a walnut orchard, so it had 6 walnut trees on it too. But we're talking a city lot is all. The greatest threat is taking loans, and I was strictly warned even about having a credit card, so why do farmers take such big risks?

I beg to differ. Having worked in NYC for law firms and trading firms I can assure you they did not get up at 5 am in the morning, dig tunnels through snowdrifts (13 - 14 feet) to go "milk the dairy cows". (twice a day). No unemployment or "safety" net or "stimulus checks" if your crops got destroyed (weather, bugs whatever and then came the depression.) My mother grew up on a farm in upstate NY (we saw her house when we visited relatives and it was smaller than a "tiny house" ( 7 children). It was during the depression and tough work. Healthier eating. People would trade what they grew with others. She told us that during the depression people would drop off what they grew and they would drop off milk and eggs.
