The power Anthony Quinn projected onscreen was something he possessed inherently. He came into a store I worked at, in the 1990's, when he was no longer young. Though he was friendly, warm and mild-mannered, he still filled the place with a sense of that raw power. It was just there. He was a presence.

Hi, that must be in Bristol R.I.. he lived next door to my father, and the first time I met him, he was sitting on the front porch chilling out. It took me two takes my jaw dropped to recognize him, and then I was speechless. Then I said thanks for the great movies. He nodded and then asked if he was my father. I said yes, then apologized for anything he had said out of line. He chuckled and then said he was a character, then smiled at me. I can only imagine the conversations they had together.

I agree with you about the quality of the movie. It's very, very good. But this wasn't one of Anthony Quinn's first films at all. He had been appearing in big-screen films since 1936, when he made an uncredited debut at the age of 21 in THE MILKY WAY and, later that year, his first film credit in PAROLE! He had also already won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for VIVA ZAPATA! (1952) and would win another in 1957 for LUST FOR LIFE. Believe it or not, he was 40 years old when he made this movie - one of four films he made in 1955.

Anthony Quinn was one of my very favorite actors too, but all this time I thought he had greek ancestry, I guess because he played such an excellent part in Zorba the Greek. As it turns out...Anthony Rudolph Oaxaca Quinn was born in Chihuahua, Mexico of poor Irish-Mexican parentage. His maternal grandmother was a Cherokee Indian. His father, Francisco Quinn, who spoke Spanish with an Irish brogue, fought with the Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa. As a boy, Quinn's family moved to California to pick grapes.
@greekveteran27152 жыл бұрын
Telly Savalas was Greek, Anthony Quinn was Mexican. I was also confused when I was younger, I thought both where Greek, but it was the Movie Zorba the Greek, that has given us that idea!! Irene Papas , Jenifer Aniston, Maria Menounos, Zach Galifianakis, (Hugh Jackman (He has Greek blood, but not 100% Greek as most mentions here)) Kelly Clarkson, Melina Kanakaredes. Those are some of the most known Greek actors in Hollywood, there are many others. Most Greeks do not live in Greece.The new World Order, even though they run all the world since hundreds of years ago, so it's a lie they are "new" they don't want Greece, to be where it could be. They hate Greeks. It's not for only one reason, for example Greece is a Christian Orthodox Country, and they are Satanists. Thats only one reason, there are a lot of other reasons. That's why, most educated Greeks, where taken in the USA and the non educated or talented ones, are in Germany, Australia and allover around the world.

There's no denying Tony Quinn was a bonafide legend. He was so good an actor that when he played the part of an Italian, people thought he was really Italian. When he played a Greek, people really believed he was Greek. Hell, some people thought he was an Eskimo after he did 'The Savage Innocents'! Yes, boys and girls. When Dylan sang Quinn the Eskimo, he was singing about Anthony. But this legend in his own time was actually Mexican. When I found that out, it blew me away. I saw him in person when he was acting in Zorba the Greek on broadway. The woman I was married to at the time was doing some art work for the people who adopted him when he was just a kid and she wanted to say hello, so we waited for him to exit the theatre after his performance. He looked to me like seven feet tall. He was very friendly and surprised when my ex told him that she knew his 'parents'. She got his handshake. I wish I had. I collect handshakes instead of autographs.

A tour de force in acting! Very good story and Quinn hits his mark every time. Even the look on his face when he turns and leaves Bancroft on the front porch conveys in a split second what he is thinking. Despite having second star billing, Anthony Quinn dominates this movie both in the plot line and in screen time. A young(er) Anne Bancroft gives a decent performance as Quinn's sister. Farley Granger was basically at the end of his Hollywood movie career, having bought out his contract from Samuel Goldwyn to pursue acting on the stage in New York City. Granger was about 30 years old when this film was released. He basically reached the peak of his career in Alfred Hitchcock's 1951 masterpiece, "Strangers on a Train."

Great performance by my favorite Farley Granger, very intense, and emotional....and my other favorite great actor A. Quinn, always so demanding, and virile....

Bertha Martin, You think Farley Granger was the father of Stuart Granger? Just thinking out loud.
@stevecolley67505 жыл бұрын
@@swordoff7 Damn, you are stupid! Stuart Granger was 6’ 2”, born in London in 1913 and Farley Granger 5’ 9” was born in San Jose, California in 1925 and was openly gay. Perhaps you should keep your thoughts to yourself.

Jean Claude...I never thought much about Anthony Quinn until I saw him in a few movies someone suggested, then this one I was not aware of until I wanted to really see Anne Bancroft in it (a fine actor and gorgeous besides) ...and I never knew Quinn played a part as he does here; it is very good, one of his best performances.

Wow! First thing I notice is A. Quinn leaving his dear mother to serve her own stew. Then gross table manners, then cussing his sister for "getting herself jammed up!" Good Grief! 🙄 Yes I know it's only a film (and a good one) and those were the way things were back then but...😠. Now will watch the whole thing...

It's not "back then" - it's just some people's manners or not - regardless of WHEN.
