I grew up living for a period of time within 200 yards of Mel Street. Mel lived right outside of Bluefield, WV in a little community call Brushfork for a few years. Little did I know that Mel would go from the local TV stations 'Country Showcase' to Nashville and a number of country music chart toppers. Smokey Mountain Memories is my favorite song by Mel. I also worked with his brother Harry. Read the book by George Jones titled 'I Lived To Tell It All'. George was let out of a Louisiana jail to travel to Nashville where he sang at Mel's funeral. Mel left us at the young age of 42. RIP..............Mel Street

Mel's music invokes memories of jukebox tunes playing in a small town dimly lit, smokey filled "beer-joint", while ceiling fans whirled above. Every other beer on the bar was a PBR and the place was serving up steamed blue crabs and shrimp (Chesapeake Bay country) on a breezy warm summer's nite. Think 1964 - 1972.

Thank you. I see comments under some of his songs saying he was from West Va. And I've replied to a few that No, he wasn't, he was from. GARDEN CREEK (which name changed years ago to Rowe Va, even a post office closed and they combined 2). Which wasn't far from Grundy Va. But there on Garden Creek is a marker stating this was Mel Streets birthplace. Just to the road was my Daddy's homeplace. He was CM "Kin" McGlothlin, last son of 14 kids of Neally & Margie McGlothlin. They lived up Rosen Camp rd, a little ways up on the left. My Aunt Ruth Street lived there for many years after our grandpa died, until she was up in age and her & her husband moved in with her youngest daughter right beside her. At the edge of that road is the marker for Mel Street.
