Not really known fact but in the beginning of the thirty years war the german population was 20 million. When the war was over the population was only at 13 million. The number of people that died during that conflict is mind-staggering when you compare it to the total population of germany back then and compared to other conflicts during that time. It's one of the deadliest conflicts in human history and the germans basically were the punching bag of all of europe during that time, with people from all over europe slaughtering germans within their country. Also one of the greatest war-crimes of european history, with thousands and thousands of villages, towns and cities completely destroyed and it's population butchered ... but it's easily forgotten these days. And some of the countries that considered themselves as the biggest humanitarians, like sweden, were a big part of that slaughter. Still, to this day, Gustavus Adolphus is worshipped like a hero by many, even if he was responsible of the death of a considerable portion of germany's population back then.
