Many reasons. One being that in West Malaysia, Malays form the majority (>60%) while in East Malaysia, the ethnic composition is more evened out (roughly 1/3 Malay, 1/3 Dayak, 1/4 Chinese, and others making up the rest). Second, there were no conservative political parties in East Malaysia to stir the pot. Hi! Malaysian here. This is very accurate but a few more details: - on 13 may 1969, opposition parties did very well in the election a few days prior. It is unsure what started it (but probably something to do with malaysian-chinese parties doing well), but there were clashes between Malays and Malaysian-chinese mobs, leading to the death of ~800 people. This widened the racial divide - The university quota system caused many malaysian-chinese and malaysian-indians to study abroad (typically financed by parents taking out a mortgage), creating a brain drain. - From 1957 to 2018, a party called UMNO (United Malays National Organisation, malay nationalists) were in charge. They were defeated in 2018 (even though they were gerrymandering lol) 2018-2022 saw two succesive coalition governments collapse, but now the current government is stable. - Currentlty, malaysia is the most democratic country in Southeast Asia, and the third longest running Asian democracy Great video!

The issue isn't as simple as this video suggests. Malaysia's post-independence policies need to be understood in the context of demographics - the British brought in massive numbers of immigrants, creating a situation where indigenous populations risked becoming a minority in their own land. In a democracy, being a minority means losing political control since majority votes shape the country's direction. That's why many policies were created - not out of racism, but as necessary measures for cultural and political survival. Also worth noting - most English content about Malaysian history tends to come from urban, English-educated perspectives that often miss crucial context. If you look at similar situations in other former colonies, you'll see how complex these issues really are. The separation with Singapore wasn't about "racism" - it was about preventing deeper conflicts over fundamental questions of sovereignty. This isn't about being "poor" or "rich" - it's about maintaining cultural and political autonomy in our ancestral lands while balancing modernization. Easy to criticize from one perspective, but reality is way more nuanced than this video suggests.
@Ghenouveau2 күн бұрын
Makes sense that people get upset when you try to force different cultures to become one artificial "unified" culture. Our own history already explained why the laws exist to protect Malay race. Back then, during British era, Malay was purposely being kept poor and not knowledgeable. they being separated from working at place that provides more money, and school only being given to a select few. This is the main goal of British to make the Malay weak so they can control the country. If not because of that case, do we really think the laws of wanting to protect Malay exist? This video simplified a main historical events that led to WHY the laws existed.

They are still ongoing. These crooked politicians and rural people (predominantly Malays that were exploited by their own Malay politicians) will make sure such racist policies continue on so they can benefit themselves (even though the rural people only get pennies while the politicians get millions).

Edited time stamp for people who don't pause the video. It is now 7:00 instead of 7:03 which goes to next slide in 1 second. Also I do read your replies. I still think its a sad situation and hope Malaysia can do better for everyone in the future. As @mayonotes mentioned, the rural Malays also don't have much help from the government and don't see much of the benefits compared to politicians and their friends. Malaysia for Malaysians should be the way, not just for malays (or any specific race).

@@herokiryu2652 I don't like to argue over things like this. Rather be positive. He also had no mention of the infamous killings on May 13th. There is also no mention of this in the textbooks that reflect reality. The reality is why the 40% minority population went down is because of that day (they died or left the country afterwards). A lot of people mainly minorities died that day. All sides of the situation will blame the other side for things and history gets lost to time or buried intentionally. The communist insurgency happened as a result of this massacre / killing where the military opened fire with guns on civilian minorities which had nothing or only knives. The racist policies, the political opposition, the May 13th killings, the communist insurgency (listed in order). Its a tip for tap where nobody wins and the country becomes poorer and everyone suffers as a result.

Malaysia is a federal country, quite unique system and different system than the rest of the world. From our pov, every state in Malaysia is a sovereign state.The only entity that hold us together is the federal gov. Thats why there are so many different administrative systems( oligarch, monarchy, theocracy, etc..) in a single country. The problem with Singapore is they demand too much like, no involvement from the federal gov in singapore, they manage them self their economy and many more. Basically, " your money is our money, mine is mine" while we just gone through ww2, japanese invasion, indonesian confrontation, communists insugency and many more. Dont forget Singapore is the favourite child of the British. They got all the infra, port, and money while 80 % of other state still had no paved road. Im tired of Singapore narative that they kicked out of Malaysia just because of racial issue( peneng, sabah and sarawak also majority non-malay and didn't kicked out) while amnesiac about all of those absurd demand. Our 1st Prime Minister said Singapore is like " duri dalam daging" or thorn in your meat. It will eat your from the inside.

It requires a both side to cooperate. If thenon malay refuses to practice and be fluent in the National Language, it begs the question on whether they are truly part of that nationalities. To say the chinese contribute to higher tax income in Malaysia is pure myth. Based on Inland review board (IRB), 63% of income tax are contributed by the malays, followed by chinese 13%. (Old data : 2015-2018). Malay contribute in major areas of income and economy in Malaysia, so let's be fair and don't downplay each races role. Regarding economic policies, there are few initiative by government to aid the poor non malay compared to the aid to the native (malay included). Albeit lower, there's an increase in effort to cover all poor income families regardless of race. Not enough, but it's a work in progress. There's also an issues of the non malay (non native) that refuses to join government offices due to it being perceive as lower valued job, menial job etc. every year the amount of applicant by non malay(non native) are very very low. 😅

I came into this video thinking it would be another Singapore hit piece but it was a (mostly) balanced look at Malaysia. I am not sure why people are talking about race , but as a mix-race person (and therefore objective) I will add the following to the conversation: (i) Its easy to label Malays’s as being racist for what happened with Singapore but this is done based on today’s moral standards and lens. The Malay’s at the time had just gained independence after centuries of colonisation. Statements of Malaysian Malaysia at the time would look to them, like neo-colonialism. (ii) Brain drain has nothing to do with racism but perceived low wages in Malaysia. Saying brain drain is due to racism overlooks the fact that Malays also leave Malaysia for greener pastures and that racism is also prevalent in the UK, US and Australia, where Malaysian diaspora usually are. Nice touch at @6:47 , the “unofficially dominated by ethnic Chinese” is crossed out in reference to Singapore oppressive censorship of freedom of speech.

The Malay elites use systematic racism against any Malaysian national that isn’t Bumiputera, and use the racism that the lighter skinned races project as a card of “hey, you do it too” in an attempt to blur the line of systematic and individual racism so they could pit the darker races against the lighter ones (gain pity points from darker skinned peoples, even when those darker than Malays are still no less discriminated than the much lighter in skin Chinese).

We can choose to settle down in kampung and still connected to modern world. We don't have a group of rakyat surviving on garbage. Calling ourselves poor is kinda lowkey disrespecting our people and neighbors. But I agree if we say we are not as rich as we could be. The Chinese and Indians migrated in large numbers and outnumbered the local population. Imagine forcing the natives to speak English as the common language instead of their own language in their own land. Do you see how problematic this is? The separation of Malaysia and Singapore was necessary to prevent a domestic conflict similar to the Bosnian War. Any narratives about Malaysia in English are often biased towards the Chinese, as they tend to write more in English and present their own version of history, which often portrays the Malays as racists and the Chinese as infallible.
