JudithB Well, stuff happens!!! I would take a hammer to the gutter pipe to straighten it out some and stick some duct tape on it for temporary. I would put some road gravel under the spout or a rain saver barrel!!! I would move the rest of that dirt pile along the cement edge and smooth it out so its safe to mow it. I am still waiting for cooler weather to arrive and have a long list to do before winter. Those dogs sure have grown!

In 2011, I brought in 92 truckloads of dirt to help repair a ravine. Tilled the dirt and sowed bags of grass seed. 16 hours later hurricane Irene followed by tropical storm Lee dumped heavy rains nonstop for a week and I had 12" deep gullies to repair. What are the odds I would choose to do this project just before the worst rain in 39 years hit Pennsylvania..

First thing you do is take a weed trimmer to that pile of weeds before hauling it over. Second, rake in the seed and third, a lot less hay; otherwise, you will kill the new grass.
@jonkwin9620
@jonkwin9620 3 жыл бұрын
Probably most folk would use around 3 pounds of grass seed raked in and 1/4 of a bale of hay. Maybe if you get all that hay off just as the seed starts to germinate, because that heavy mulch of hay will kill the grass soon after it sprouts.

You need to take half that hay back off. At the thickness you have now, it’s a weed suppressant. This means it will also inhibit any germination of the grass seed. There should be just enough hay to slightly shade the seed and keep it from washing away. Even half that much hay might be too much (hard to see from the camera angle). But definitely get half of it off.

Super "Big Boy Toy" playing in this video. So glad you got a chance at the new TYM tractor Evan. You sure needed it. Nothing against older equipment---most of it was built "bullet-proof" (or it wouldn't still be around...) but enlarged capabilities come with more update engineering. But I'd certainly SOD that back-fill a.s.a.p. Or maybe hydro-seeded (depending upon your climate and season)

To those who bash us for giving constructive criticism.......No, we don't live in "mommy's basement" and shout out criticism. Many of us have been/are actual farmers for more years than Evan has been alive. We have..."been there,done that"...and when we see things done blatantly wrong yet applauded by posters we speak up. I believe Evan has mentioned he was a novice at farming. And yes, many gardeners put down a thick layer of hay/straw to PREVENT weeds/GRASSES from emerging. Highway construction crews seed the ditches with grass and then put bales of straw in a chopper that spreads a THIN layer of chopped straw over the grass. (key word) "thin"

.....if nothing else, the "4-wheeler" is more fun to drive....I've used a "side-by-side" with knobby tires in lieu of a proper cultipacker for a couple years to broadcast plant cover crops. The "dimples" created by the knobs on the tires make little depressions which "catch" rain drops. And in those spots the seed is brought into firm contact with the soil (even if it's not completely buried...) If you drive fast enough (over dry sandy soils) the tires "spray" the dirt out and this helps cover the seed. A "French drain" at the edge of your slab, "Teed" into your roof downspout's distribution system might help.

Dude I have to admit I LMAO when you caught that downspout with the loader. 🤣 I think your a little closer to $50 to replace it, plus you’re going to want to add some 6” PVC or similar material to go underground and away from the building a ways. You’ll be fighting erosion issues forever. I’d also bring in at least two more loads of fill to soften that slope and plant some grass on it, if you get a gully washer all your work is going to be down the hill about 100 yards.

Well the dogs like it! Hopefully it grows. Just wonder if it may be a area to put larger stone. Possibly to make a stone area. You might be able to get the plastic drain hose to put on the down spout. Hopefully you could cut it above the cut. I thought the cut was for checking to see if there was a blockage. I won t tell if you move it to the back of the building lol. I think that spot is going to be a pain for washout. Maybe a trench of rocks so the water flows away. Just some Ideas. I thought if plants got sit in too much water they died. I hope things work out with the field. It is hard to be patient. Let it get good and dry. I talked to a old farmer he laughed when I told him the issues I was having. He stated he had a 6 or 7 bottom plough and it got so hard he could not pull it through the clay soil. The corn he grew always looked good do to the soil holding water. He always ran a plough in the fall. The disc usually compacts the soil also. Hope your having a great weekend

A small tip that I learned when getting dirt from a pile that helped me out. Curl the bucket down and bring it down on top of the pile and "scrape back" to loosen it. Do it a couple of times, then fill the bucket. You won't spin the tires as much. I used a product called "contractor's seed" or something like that to get "something" growing quickly, and it did the job. I then over-seeded with what I wanted. I got good results doing that. Of course, my climate here in North Florida is not the same as yours, but for a "virgin" spot of land you might consider going that route.

Mike taught me that as well. I have a smaller (and much older), 2WD tractor, and it doesn’t have enough traction or lift to fill the bucket with soil or even gravel. But dragging it down to loosen it and get some out in front of the pile, move into it and curl as you go, and fill the bucket. It’s easier on the tractor’s drive train and hydraulics. Mike knows his way around his equipment.
