Probably most folk would use around 3 pounds of grass seed raked in and 1/4 of a bale of hay. Maybe if you get all that hay off just as the seed starts to germinate, because that heavy mulch of hay will kill the grass soon after it sprouts.

Evan, The grass may come up as thick as sheep's wool. Well, it would have but you put far too much hay on it. That was enough seed to plant an area 10 times the size of that small plot. Since you put out too much hay and too much seed, it will be a contest of survival of the fittest seeds. I'll say one thing. You need to take half that hay back off. At the thickness you have now, it’s a weed suppressant. This means it will also inhibit any germination of the grass seed. There should be just enough hay to slightly shade the seed and keep it from washing away. Even half that much hay might be too much (hard to see from the camera angle). But definitely get half of it off.

Dude I have to admit I LMAO when you caught that downspout with the loader. 🤣 I think your a little closer to $50 to replace it, plus you’re going to want to add some 6” PVC or similar material to go underground and away from the building a ways. You’ll be fighting erosion issues forever. I’d also bring in at least two more loads of fill to soften that slope and plant some grass on it, if you get a gully washer all your work is going to be down the hill about 100 yards.

What are the odds I would choose to do this project just before the worst rain in 39 years hit Pennsylvania..

Well the only thing you should have done is raking the surface properly before seeding - to make it fluffy, then seed the soil and then use the lawn roller to thicken it - done! .. there's absolutely no need to cover everything with such thick layer of hay .. seems to me you're trying to kill your future grass, preventing it from germinating coz grass plants need light to grow. However, thumbs up anyway for such amount of excessive work! :))

Many of us have been/are actual farmers for more years than Evan has been alive. We have..."been there, done that"...and when we see things done blatantly wrong yet applauded by posters we speak up. I believe Evan has mentioned he was a novice at farming. And yes, many gardeners put down a thick layer of hay/straw to PREVENT weeds/GRASSES from emerging. Highway construction crews seed the ditches with grass and then put bales of straw in a chopper that spreads a THIN layer of chopped straw over the grass. (key word) "thin"

Sorry, but this is a video on how not to seed grass. The thick hay will inhibit growth - except for the weeds and other seeds in the hay itself. Always use straw, not hay, and apply very thin. A bluegrass mix is far better than the 'all-in-one' stuff, and the seed should have been lightly raked-in. Finally, when seeding in summer you will need to water every day (if there is no rain) until the grass is established or it will sprout and die.

The "dimples" created by the knobs on the tires make little depressions which "catch" rain drops. And in those spots the seed is brought into firm contact with the soil (even if it's not completely buried...) If you drive fast enough (over dry sandy soils) the tires "spray" the dirt out and this helps cover the seed. A "French drain" at the edge of your slab, "Teed" into your roof downspout's distribution system might help.

Mike taught me that as well. I have a smaller (and much older), 2WD tractor, and it doesn’t have enough traction or lift to fill the bucket with soil or even gravel. But dragging it down to loosen it and get some out in front of the pile, move into it and curl as you go, and fill the bucket. It’s easier on the tractor’s drive train and hydraulics. Mike knows his way around his equipment.

Don't complain about the rain. Up here in MN we have not had any for close to two months. Farmers I know are down half to two thirds less then normal hay supply and will have to sell some of the herd or buy really expensive hay. Great video's keep up the good/hard work

Good thing you only clipped the downspout and not the post😀. The downspout can be replaced in just a few minutes. The hard part maybe matching the color, but I think it is a basic black color so should be easy to match.

This probably doesn’t help, but some of your “goof-ups” are the same exact experiences I’ve had! I appreciate that you do not edit them out, reminds me that I’m not the only one!

Well the dogs like it! Hopefully it grows. Just wonder if it may be a area to put larger stone. Possibly to make a stone area. You might be able to get the plastic drain hose to put on the down spout. Hopefully you could cut it above the cut. I thought the cut was for checking to see if there was a blockage. I won t tell if you move it to the back of the building lol. I think that spot is going to be a pain for washout. Maybe a trench of rocks so the water flows away. Just some Ideas. I thought if plants got sit in too much water they died. I hope things work out with the field. It is hard to be patient. Let it get good and dry. I talked to a old farmer he laughed when I told him the issues I was having. He stated he had a 6 or 7 bottom plough and it got so hard he could not pull it through the clay soil. The corn he grew always looked good do to the soil holding water. He always ran a plough in the fall. The disc usually compacts the soil also. Hope your having a great weekend

Evan you could cut the downpipe and put in a water drum to catch water and put in an over flow pipe away from the building. Love the videos, keep em coming 🖒👍

TIM from Canada why would you go and do this taking the weeds from one end of your yard and putting them on your driveway.. you should have dug a test pit this way you can get as much dirt as you need and it is not full of weeds... digging test pits is a good way to find the best dirt on your property...

I would turn the gutter back down then burry a pipe out thru the new soil to crop out on the existing soil to stop erosion.

You need a tooth bar for that bucket. I made one for mine and it makes the world of difference when digging like that and you get way more dirt into the bucket per scoop. Reducing travel time

now that you've done all that work my thought is you might have wanted to put a perforated drain pipe right along the concrete with a tee at the downspout and run the water off away from the concrete under ground so you don't have to mow around it. i feel that even if you get a stand of grass you will have washing along the concrete and especially at the downspout. well we will see what happens when you get a good rain! by the way a mower makes a good mulch spreader just flake off and run it through the mower

The downspout is a cheap warning device that you are getting close to the post. A curb feeler so to speak. jack

to fix your digging in issue with your allis chalmers you need to adjust the traction booster. right now you must have it set to its lowest setting. if your raise the handle on left side of steering wheel up about half way it will prevent your blade from digging in.

A whole lot of "what not to do" in this video. That first bag of seed was more than enough, but a lot of the grass won't come up because you didn't rake it into the ground and you covered it with way too much hay.

Don’t need to bury grass seed just needs ground contact. Did you buy the seed? No I doubt it, too much is better than not enough!

It might have been easier to use grass turfs if you can get them, as this would have protected the soil from runoff
