Evan, save yourself some money. Contact local basement water proofing companies, excavating companies and sewer installers. I never have to pay for fill dirt. Often times the “fill dirt” that arrives is topsoil and I can save on my topsoil costs. If you have 3” of topsoil, that’ll be fine for the grass to grow. I’m sure your soil is still warm enough to get some germination. I enjoy your videos, people can really relate to your projects.

I always tried to do it all by myself with my own material but have found, you are just as far ahead going to work and spending your time making money for your project at your regular job. Then, have it your material delivered like you just did.. where you need it. There is enough work in just doing the finish work without adding the hassle of digging a borrow pit and being hard on your equipment and yourself.

That fill dirt ain't half bad. Might even grow grass. I have seen a lot worse. After the first week in November, doubtful that it will germinate but if the weather co-operates, who can say. I would extend the downspouts so that they do not wash out the bare soil over the winter.
@jackmargason25943 жыл бұрын
You may not be an expert but you are pretty darn good at anything you try. I want to be like you when I grow up ( may be a little late as I am sneaking up on my 70th birthday). Also stick with the pit run. It worked up real nice and seemed pretty reasonable.

One suggestion when you're finishing an area for grass is to take a 4'x8' piece of chain link fence. Staple it to a 2x8 x 4ft board with 10' of rope stapled to each end. Pull it all over the area with your lawn mower to smooth out the tractor ruts... The ruts will hold water and get muddy faster than flat lawn that allows even absorption...
@VeilZuTun3 жыл бұрын
Seems the dogs already approve of the area. They were certainly enjoying playing while you worked.
@jimputnam20443 жыл бұрын
You are right on the fill. Some times just buy decent stuff, I got a bunch of free from the highway when they widened it and cleaned out the ditches. Was a lot of slop from a nearby swampy area a lot of bushes which try to grow back even after they are buried and tramped in, plus some doozy size rocks we had to pick. Free is not always the way to go.

It’s definitely late to plant for our area but you’d be surprised sometimes. It wouldn’t surprise me if it went ahead and at least had some germination. We have some warm weather coming in December. If it doesn’t you’ll see a good amount in the spring. I like to put some wheat seed in on something like that. It’ll germinate quick and grow later and sooner and you can get bin run wheat really cheap. But I think you’ll be fine. It’s looking good. Any time you have to haul fill it gets expensive. Keep up the good work.

I think you did it right. I wouldn't go borrowing dirt from elsewhere on the property unless you already have a pile sitting someplace from another dig project. Even that would take a dump trailer and a lot of scoops to get it where you wanted it. Like you said, there's probably good soil in the pond, but that might be a good project to do now, for when you need dirt next year. Give it time to dry out.

Compost works better if you dig some 5-6 feet deep, 20' Wide x 30' long hole to dump all manure and barn waste etc. They compost better if you add 5-6 inches of soil after every layer of 12-15 inches of manure, then cover it with a layer of dry/wet leaves. That's how we used to make our compost.

I think 50 degrees is kinda the germination magic temp. You probably don’t want it to germinate now, or colder temps in December will kill the tender sprouts. Maybe your mulch will help ease the cold. Best case is it goes dormant and sprouts in the spring. **If the dogs spend much time in there, won’t be much grass anyway!

Suggestion - Make friends with an excavator company in your area and might have topsoil or file dirt they need to get rid of for free or a small fee when they are in your area. Just tell them where to dump it which will save them time and money too.
