Today we are processing our meat chickens. We have been raising some Cornish Cross chickens we bought for our local farm store. They have been on pasture the last few weeks in a chicken tractor. Now it is time for them to be processed. We use shrink bags to freeze the chickens in. And we will also make a big batch of broth or chicken stock.

We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acres homestead. We just finished building our log cabin overlooking our pond. We are trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey living the rural life and developing our property and becoming more self sufficient.

I've watched many of you homesteaders butcher chickens and when we were on the farm my parents brought the water to a boil then grabbed the chickens feet and dipped it brought it up and maybe dipped the chicken one more time that quick and it was enough to pluck the feathers off. You do not want to leave the chicken in the water for any length of time because it will start to cook the meat. Just dip, up, dip again then pluck. You won't need to check the temperature we just brought the water to a boil then started the process. We would process 100 chickens in a day and there would be sometimes 15 or so people helping each with their own jobs. Loved the fresh chickens store bought is not the same. Wishing we lived closer and I would come help you guys. Love the show. Stay healthy.....Hugs from Minnesota

Great and informative video as always! You and Rebekah always do the best job at explaining and showing how you do things. That's why you guys are mine and hubby's favorite KZbin homesteaders.

Great video. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the other one where you show the process more in depth. When I was a kid my mom would roast the chicken hearts too. They are so yummy!! ❤️

What makes these videos so appealing is the unnoticed presence of running water and electricity for freezer, boiler, etc. makes me think back to my grandparents’ farm. I am old enough to remember pumping water out of a well and gathering potatoes from the root cellar, etc.
Taking the pigs to the processor. What was our feed cost?
