DIY Pig Trough and Pig Waterer

We are building a pig trough and pig waterer out of 55 gallon food grade barrels. The pig trough will use half a barrel and a wood frame that is anchored to the ground, so the pigs can't move it around. The trough will be a great place to feed the pigs or throw food scraps to the pigs. The pig waterer will use bulkhead fittings though the barrel to help prevent leaks. Then a pig water nipple or bite valve will be threaded into the bulkhead fitting. I placed them at 3 different heights so there will be a good place to drink as the pigs grow and get bigger.

Very smart idea and very well done. One thing that I would suggest is possibly making two "cover plates" for the big hole, only drill a large hole through them both and possibly "sandwich" a screen over the top. It would serve two purposes. For one it would allow air above the water level to prevent a "sealant suction" block that may happen if they happen to be drinking a lot of water. The other thing it would do is allow rain water to enter the tank. One other thought, a drain of some kind at the bottom with a valve might be useful as well just in case the tank does start getting some algae or other unwanted debris in it. You would be able to "rinse in place" rather than pull the tank out. Just some ideas that I'm throwing out there not criticizing the great work that you have done. You have given me many ideas and I just thought I would share my thoughts regarding it.

If you attached it with solid hinges at the top instead of carriage bolts you could clean it out by flipping it up over the top and dump it. The pigs usually can't make it flip, though. Rinses out well that way, too.

That circular slab, where you burn your limbs, would have been a perfect place to raise pigs. They only smell bad if they wallow in the mud. They always poop and pee in the same place, so it's easy to clean up and spray off.

Wrap the entire water barrel in heavy black plastic and secure it tight to the barrel. Light is your enemy when it comes to algae forming. Also, when you fill the barrel you can put approx 2 Tbsp of bleach into it to sanitize the water (proportionately less if the barrel still had water in it. Not that the pigs need it, but it helps to keep the barrel sanitized.

It's been my experience that if a pig can get his nose under it he will flip it. I don't think those 1' spikes will keep them from upending that feeder. ON a side note, I'd get some wood chips, or old hay in that pen because they are ripping it up. Might be time to put up some temporary electric fence and let them travel over to the right of the pen into that brush with the fuel tank in it for a few days to clean that out for you.

All you have to do is get a piece of copper pipe and put it in the bottom of the barrel no more algae

I use a dog waterer to water my pigs, it screws onto the hose spigot. Pigs bite it and it lets out a little liquid.Tractor supply has them. Pigs learned to use them immediately. No more flipped water bowls

you might want to drill some weep holes in the feeder so it won't fill up with water after a rain

Beware of algae growth Evan! Lol. Got me pretty hard when I did aquaponics. Good work. If it is an issue look into a phosphorus remover. I haven't looked into if there are any food safe versions but I thought I would mention it as people use it for ponds. May be inherently safe not sure.

Evan you need to add water to their dry grain it well ferment ,takes a couple days to do so. It well help them digest there food with little waste.Google fermenting hog feed

You might be able to paint the barrells a darker color. I saw a mangalitsa pig farmer on youtube putting those rubber bowls inside of what looks like a truck tire to keep the pigs from turning them over. They fit perfectly inside of the tire.

I used a brass bulkhead fitting now and the water nipples are still doing fine. Mine leaks around the bulkhead fitting a little. Been meaning to take it apart and use silicone sealant around the bulkhead fitting. But overall still doing good.

Use a blue barrel, it cuts down on the amount of sunlight so that algae growth is lower.

I used these 3/4" UNISEAL Flexible Tank Adapter (Bulkhead) - 5 Pack www.amazon.com/dp/B00FAFH08U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_8AC1M8QPVQ5HSAZJCN7D?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Use a 1 1/4” hole saw for the seals then a piece of 3/4 pipe bout 10” long though it with the nipple on the end, push it all the way in. This way the nipple can move and have flexibility and not snap off and you have a muddy mess
