you could put the whole float valve and pipe inside of a 3”PVC pipe to protect it from the pigs messing with it

IBCs are the best things on the farm! Storage, housing, water, etc! You can pipe the drain water elsewhere to let the pigs play in the water in a different place.

I wonder if it would be worth taking the plastic that you cut out and maybe drill a few holes at the top, attach it with wire and make it kind of a swing door. Maybe that would help keep them from getting all the way in and keep more debre out. Also, I feel like if it becomes an issue with the pigs getting in and messing with the float valve pvc piece, maybe you could move it back the the rear of the tote a secure it to the back wall. Probably do that with a few elbows or maybe even drill an new spot up top.

Awesome design and love all your videos as I’m preparing to get into this life style next year. Only thing I’d add to the design would be a shit off valve at the end of the hose where it connects to the pvc pipe that way you won’t have to shut off the main source just that like when moving the contraption or if you have a leak due to the pigs breaking the pvc pipe won’t have to run back to shut it off. Keep the videos coming please

Jordan has a "frost free" drinker that I'm going to build. We don't get a lot of hard freezes here either but we can get a cold snap or two during the winter. I've been thinking about building a water trailer with 2 IBC totes and a pump to shuttle water back and forth for times when we have to cut the hoses off. Not sure what I'm going to do this winter myself. Plan to have a lot more pigs this winter than in years past.

I’ve got a question what would you do in the winter with this set up? I have a suggestion on if the pigs are pushing on the pvc holding the float valve you might could put a 90 at the top and run that pvc to the back of the tank instead of the middle and that should eliminate their ability to push on the pvc holding the valve... just an idea 💡

If I am getting feeder pigs at 60 or so pounds will this waterer work just as well for them or does this work better on larger pigs?
@JenniferRodriguez-yc7dk
@JenniferRodriguez-yc7dk Жыл бұрын
I feel like you could have the same result and have a lot less water waste if you used a smaller container. This one here can only water one pig at a time because of the hole size.. Would be a better idea maybe to take a trough that's got an edge just high enough for the pigs to get their heads in, fill it with some concrete up to about 5 inches from the top, have a wide PVC tube in the middle with some holes drilled in it to house that float valve apparatus, then position it so it would keep the tough filled only a couple of inches high. That way the pigs can get a drink from any direction, it's too heavy to knock over, and the amount of water sitting there collecting dirt spit and mosquitoes is minimal. :)

Wound have been better to use the nipple instead of cutting the hole on the tank. Would have had zero water contamination and the pigs wouldn't be able to tamper with the float valve. Still a great idea🖒

And add in the cost of water hoses. Where the pigs or going here we need about 1,500' of hose. I like this pig waterer and will probably setup a gravity bulk tank for water so the hose run will be one to two hundred feet at the most. Then find an affordable water tank on a trailer to fill the bulk tank. Gonna need to sell a LOT of bacon!

What happens with smaller pigs, do you use a different setup? It doesn't seem like the amount of water held in the bottom is a whole lot, do you guys have freezes where you are, do you keep the water on to the tote 24/7?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Thinking about a design for the smaller pigs. May use the same style IBC with a shorter front on it. It is self filling so the water level stays the same. Doesn’t need to hold a lot of volume that way. There is a frost free version that we are going to be building soon. That will be our winter version. We do get some freezes but not long stretches of below freezing weather.

It is a MUCH better design on the 55 gallon barrel to connect a short 8-12" piece of garden hose to it and then put the nipples on the end of that. That creates a bit of give and so they don't rip the nipples out of the side of the hard plastic tank. This water is filthy and one with cup waterers or nipples would be much better.

Not had any issue with that. As they get bigger, it tough for them to get much past their shoulders through the opening.

I'm concerned. If that float stops working my well will run dry and my pump will burn up.
