Questions on filling out the accounting equation. A startup receiving $100,000 from an investor. In exchange, the investor owns 10% of the company. The startup founder has to repay the investor the $100,000 investment plus 10% interest at the end of the 2nd year. I have problem how to formulate the accounting equation for this scenario. The $100,000 is cash to the company. So, it is an asset (aka, left side of the equation) The $100,000 is also a liability because the founder has to pay back (plus interest) to the investor at the end of the 2nd year (aka $110,000). Since this # is the amount owe, so it is a liability, and it is on the right side of the equation. 1st question: The amounts on the left and on the right do not balance out. What to do? 2nd question: This problem is complicated by the fact that the payback ($110,000) is at the end of the 2nd year. How to deal with the timeline in the accounting equation? 3rd question: The investor has 10% ownership of the company immediately after the investment. Since investor is part of the ownership, this 10% should be reflect under Equity on the right-hand side of the equation. How to express this 10% equity in the accounting equation? If I can express this 10% equity in the equation, then the left- & right-side of the equation is thrown into further chaos in term of balancing the left & the right. What to do?
