Did the puppies exhibit symptoms? Rabies is extremely scary, but as far as I know it's not contagious until the animal actually starts exhibiting symptoms (i.e. sudden aggression or sudden lethargy, excessive salivating, refusal to eat or drink...) If the puppies aren't showing any symptoms, it's a shame they were euthanized. They should've just vaccinated them as a precaution.

Negligence by the rescue. Putting UN-vaccinated and under vetted puppies in a public adoption event is a HUGE no-no with all the rescues I've fostered and worked with. Puppies at intake are carried to clean holding ONLY with litter mates. No paws on the ground in common areas. People have to wash up before handling them. Everything is sanitized. Once a puppy has full vaccinations then it is allowed to go to events. Puppies are easy enough to adopt out without public events though, people are always happy to do a private meeting with a puppy if it isn't fully vaccinated. This was 100% preventable.

How completely heartbreaking. Intellectually I understand the need for the risk mitigation. A 4-month separation-especially at this stage of the puppy's development-would have been very difficult for both the puppies and the dog parents. It's sad situation all around. I'm sure the Moms & Mutts rescue is mortified about this situation as well. I hope they are tracing where the littermate was exposed to rabies.

These puppies were too young to get the rabies vaccine. But quarantining them for a couple weeks before adoption would have allowed the rescue workers to catch the symptoms before the positive puppy exposed other people.

Im surprised. Yes, to test, any animal would have to be put down to rule out rabies, but i wonder why they didn't give the other options? If the puppies were vaccinated against rabies or were close to the right age to get it, they could have done a quarantine. Were those options given? How old were the puppies?

The puppies weren't vaccinated from the original press release. They had unvaccinated puppies from different litters at the event. A huge NO-NO in the rescue world for this reason. Normally the fear is parvo. Absolutely horrible.

@Bunny11344 unfortunately no. The effects of rabies happens in the brain, and the only way to see it is by examining it microscopically. Also, there isn't just one specific place where the effects would be seen. So the whole brain has to be removed and sent out to be thoroughly examined.

@Bunny11344 I'm pretty sure it's the same for humans testing wise. I might be wrong on this, but the only difference is when they would get the brain. Rabies is deadly, so in most cases, the infected human would pass away. Then, their brain (or whole head) would be sent out for testing.

Unless the dog or animal in question who was infected by Rabies bit another animal, then you'd probably have to put the animal to sleep. But it they were not bit, then there is no need to do it.

You can only test for rabies post-mortem. A negative test doesn't mean the puppy didn't have rabies, it could also mean that the puppy was infected but the virus hadn't reached the brain yet.
