I see it everywhere, especially pm American videos, I can't seem to process why it isn't comparing women to objects. I think it’s just a saying. People say “I don’t know her” in reference to many things. I understand why you would think it is weird to gender items but in languages like Spanish objects have a gender technically. They have a masculine and feminine form of the word “the” and some words end in “o” or “a” which helps determine which form of “the” to use. I’m not sure if it makes sense but Americans also gender other things as “her” like ships for example.
