I think they already _knew_ she was a rapper; I'm sure I recall she had some rap training at another label before she joined Happyface. But yeah, here they basically had each member do the whole song to decide how the line distributions would work. Everyone was so impressed with Gahyeon's flow, and how it complimented Dami's, that she basically got promoted to lead rapper on the spot. Added to that the fact that (at the time) SuA had decided to step back from rapping to focus more on vocals and dancing... _that_ lasted. 😜

A Piri is a type of Korean flute with two reeds often compared to an oboe. The song is roughly about the anxiety and fear of being alone and the Piri is like an S.O.S for help. The lyrics can get pretty dark once you understand the meaning behind the song.

Yes, but IIRC it is also a general term for other blowy things; specifically I think I read that horns that warriors would carry into battle for signalling would also be called 피리 "piri" (more specifically, 뿔피리 "bbulpiri", a horn blowy thing). And that is what Yoohyeon found, and what made the sound as Yoohyeon touches it.

So I've been going through my kpop collection(500+ songs) listening to everything. Almost every single group has at least one b-side that I just CAN'T listen to at all. Dreamcatcher is the only one that I've found so far that I will not skip a single song. It's not a bias thing, I give every song and group at least one listen to get a feel for it. There's a few groups that are 99% no skips. Dreamcatcher is the only group that is 100% no skip.

Leez and Ollounder have the magic touch, plus now all the members have written their own stuff and all of that is good, too. This on top of the fact that their B-sides cover like 15 different genres, and yet they still don't miss. I have no idea how they pull it off over and over again, it's one of the mysteries of the universe.

Well, we _do_ call Dami "Prince Dami" a lot, and this video just contributed harder to the nickname lol. This was Gahyeon's rap debut! She continued to rap going forward; you've heard it in "Scream"/"BOCA"/"Odd Eye" already, as well as in "MAISON" and a _little_ in "VISION." But she also raps a ton in their b-sides~

This is Gahyeon's rapping debut. We all freaked out when that happened. Also, the Double Jiu shot? That's precisely why Yoohyeon has the same hair, so they could film that moment. That's some good shit right there. Also watch Breaking Out, it's an alternate version of this story. This is the Bad End, Breaking Out is the Good End. Technically this is the end of the Nightmare Series, but Breaking Out is an alternate ending.

Fun facts about Piri: That iconic whistle melody is a sample, so you might have heard it in ads or maybe even on a different song, still cool how Leez and Ollounder built everything around that sample. Fun fact #2: IIRC this might be one of the first, if not the first song where Gahyeon raps (then rapping in Scream and BOCA seeing the success she had) Fun fact #3: Apparently Handong dislikes outfits from this era, we don't know which specifically and I sincerely don't know why she doesn't like them XD I am SOOOO EXCITED for Deja Vu, you will love it!! Handong was not happy with her styling in "You and I", "What" and "Piri", especially her hair, which looked like an orange and blonde mop in "You and I" and just ORANGE in "What". That dissatisfaction played a part in her decision to go to China for "Youth With You 2", as she felt that one reason she was perpetually the least popular Dreamcatcher member was that they stylists just didn't make her look good. While Handong was in China, Dreamcatcher changed the hair & makeup artists that they work with to the current team at Studio Oui Oui, and the new team have built off of the great looks that Dongie had while she was in China. (Needless to say, Handong is MUCH more recognized and popular than she was in 2018-19…) Fun fact #4: This is the final Dreamcatcher title track for which the dance was created by Choi Sun-Hi, the group's original choreographer. Ms. Choi was freelancing for many groups, including Red Velvet, and in early 2019 SM hired her full time. That meant Ms. Choi could no longer work with other groups, but that opened up the opportunity for former Happyface trainee Hwang Sooyeon to return to the company as choreographer and Performance Director, beginning with "Deja Vu".

I didn't know that about the stylists issue, I didn't know she decided to go to China, it seems like they just sent her there, which was a good decision, but I can't believe Handong actually wanted that, she was so frustrated in Youth with You... But she definitely looks WAY better and WAY more recognizable since she went to China (that red hair... wow!!) I still like the orange tho, hehe. And about the choreographers I knew Hwang Sooyeon stepped in near this time but didn't actually know she did Deja Vu, which makes sense cause Deja Vu starts being one of those iconic Dreamcatcher dances with layered movement, iconic steps, and carefully thought formations, makes a ton of sense. Thanks again for all that info, always happy to learn something new about Dreamcatcher :)

I love this mv too, no it's not as fancy but it has a haunting beauty to it, I find I really like DC's lower budget mvs because with low budget you can go two ways you can either go "eh it's a low budget mv no one's gonna expect much from it" and let it be just that or you can utilize everything at your disposal to enrich the storytelling knowing you can't just rely on fancy visuals and create a more subtle, eerie horror (my fav genre) and that's something DC does SO well.

Kpop is bringing forth so many interesting and varying singers and groups that it deserves more attention in the rest of the world. But among all of these amazing idols you have discovered the top tier artists : Dreamcatcher and Mamamoo are by far the most unique and talented artists ! Both of them coming from a small company without the massive support of the big producers, they have followed their own way against all odds. Because these ladies are more than pretty looking dancers, they are able to perform in all circumstances - every single one as a true soloist and even better together as a group. As far as Korean Language songs, this is the last of the Nightmare Series. However, on the YT channel called Pony Canyon, DreamCatcher has some Japanese Language releases. One of them, 'Breaking Out', is said to be the 'alternate ending' or also sometimes called the 'true ending' to the Nightmare storyline. (I personally think it ties things up very nicely). All of their Japanese releases are HEAVIER than all of their Korean releases. Even with me telling you this, you might still be shocked. It's all AWESOME! If their Korean stuff is 'Light Rock' music, their Japanese stuff is Rock to actual Metal. Have fun. Luv ya both!

I'm so glad you guys finally made it to Piri, I've been waiting for this reaction since I started following your DC journey. Piri was the first DC song I ever heard and I was immediately hooked, and it remains one of my favorites to this day (though with Deja Vu next you might need to prepare to have your mind blown). One thing about Piri, the whistling sound you hear throughout the song is because the Piri they're referring to is a traditional Korean instrument like a flute. Blow the Piri is somewhat like Call out to me. BTW: Currently getting caught up on your DC livestreams on Patreon. Some information for you... If you Google Piri the majority of the responses will tell you that it's a traditional double reeded Korean flute. However, it goes a little deeper than that. "Piri" literally translates to "pipe" and is used in Korea to generally refer to any pipe-like wind instrument such as a flute, recorder or even a hollowed out animal horn (see where this is going?). You called it. The piri in this case, according a statement SuA made during an interview, is the animal horn Yoohyeon picked up from the chair at the beginning of the MV. In the days of yore, before the invention of radio, Korean soldiers used to carry a piri. They would use this to call for help or sound an alarm. Hence the lyrics "Blow the piri" and "Emergency emergency". The story in a lot of Dreamcatcher's MV tends to be two-fold, one based on the song and one based on the imagery. Most of the time they overlap. Based on a statement made by SuA during an interview, this MV is primarily about loneliness, being separated from loved ones, etc. You might recall that at this point in the story line Yoohyeon has been stuck alone in the nightmare, separated from the rest of the group for some time. Another aspect of the MV is depression and anxiety, which is depicted in a lot of imagery within the MV. For instance, the clocks represent the passage of time, getting older and possibly never having enough time to do the things you want to do. The dolls represent the loss of childhood and innocence. My best guess about the telephones would be responsibility (work / parenting / etc related phone calls) and interruptions. And obviously the depression and anxiety brought on by loneliness. Knowing this, "I've had a gun for a while" takes on a whole new, much more ominous meaning. As for the song and MV... Well, we all know that, in the overall scope of kpop, Dreamcatcher is an S-tier group. For me, Piri is one of Dreamcatcher's S-tier songs and MV's. It's easily in my top 3.

1:15 Yoo's hair is a similar colour to JiU's, which apparently allowed her to serve as her double in a couple of scenes... Shrewd... 😜 1:25 In this case, it's more of a distress signal. Or... kinda "Here I am, come to me". The girls are separated, and Yoo's using the horn to call them together to where she is. 2:05 I _loved_ Dami's super-short hair; she looked _stunning._. She indicated at the time she might keep it short for a while, but immediately started growing it back out. 2:15 Bizarrely, Dongie was apparently _not_ a fan of her outfit in Piri... 2:35 Note this is the first time Siyeon had blonde hair since her time in MinX... My favorite title track! I may have stated with Boca, but this is my favorite! It was my 4th or 5th song. Siyeon solidified… or stole co bias with Dami by being blonde. And Dami.. the short hair. I used that as inspiration for my current hair cut. I love the choreography! Gahyeon rapper debut! I love Siyeon and Dami’s suits Soo much.
