I was in the crowd in Philadelphia, and we watched the Queen performance on the Jumbotrons, and when Freddy started his "crowd control:" routine, we responded. All the way on the other side of the ocean, we were responding, just like the crowd in London.

They used Freddie's 'call & response' from Queen's 1986 Wembley concerts at the opening of the 2012 Olympics in London. 20 years after his death they still needed Freddie to get the audience involved. Not sure what that says about present day performers....

At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 34 years of active service, and over 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears. My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise, we also went to the last Queen concert they ever did. I saw Queen live 8 times in all (my wife only 6 ha ha), they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.

You are right. Queen's performance at Live Aid is voted MOST ICONIC festiwal moment of all time. You must keep in mind that this was not a Queen crowd, but still THEY STOLE THE SHOW. The crowd even didn't know they were coming because Queen were added to the list when all the tickets were sold out. Freddie commanded the crowd at 2 stadiums simultaneously (Wembley and Philadelphia) and had them in the palm of his hand. Check out Freddie's solo Barcelona - the theme song for the 1992 Summer Olimpic. Exercises in free love - you'll be shocked when you hear his voice.

Four acts that could have potentially beat Queen were The Who (very good but under rehearsed), David Bowie (very good but didn't have the audience repot), Led Zeppelin (should have stole the show but poor song choices and being horrifically under rehearsed put pay to that) and Hall & Oats (great opening numbers but then dedicated the rest of their set to essentially being the Temptations and then Mick Jagger's backing band. Also by the time they performed it was around 0430 in Britain and Europe so most viewers in those territories had gone to bed)

Imagine a 20 minute set of Immigrant Song, Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot and Rock 'n' Roll... Agree re Queen. Queen and Bowie where the tightest and best sounding acts at Wembley and it's no coincidence both were the only acts at that venue to not only properly rehearse and tailor their setlist (a real shame that with one days notice for timing reasons Bowie dropped his closing number, Five Years) but also to take their own sound crews.

@@williamjordan5554 This was around the time he started to feel the symptoms of the HIV virus which had been in his body for around 5 years at this time. After contracting HIV back then it usually lay dormant for around 5 years before the first symptoms started to show - more sore throats, infections, thrush etc, which hit Freddie in the mid 80s. Then by '87 it had developed into full blown AIDS. So that person is right, although he hadn't been diagnosed yet, he would have at least suspected he could have AIDS, especially as he knew some of his former partners had started getting ill already. And it had been in his system for a few years already by '85. But they're wrong to say he was 'very ill' at this point. He wasn't, he had a sore throat though and was advised not to sing. Sadly the movie was BS and made it seem like he went on stage that day knowing he was dying 😬
