Freddie was unapologetically him. In a time where it wasn't generally celebrated. His talent shone through and made people believe that as long as you're not hurting others, being who you are is to be celebrated and cherished. He was one in a million and the world is all the lesser without him.

At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, whilst the Bands were raising money for the people we were there to help and protect. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 35 years of active service, and over 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears. My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise, we also went to the last Queen concert they ever did. I saw Queen live 8 times in all (my wife only 6 ha ha), they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart. P.S. In 2007 I was walking in a part of London called, Putney, with 2 of my fellow service members. We were on our way to see an ex member of our Troop when I spotted a man I recognised, but I couldn't think of where from. Suddenly I realised who it was and shouted out "your John Deacon"! He nearly jumped out of his skin, and I immediately apologised for scaring the crap out of him. My two colleagues thought I'd lost my mind, until I told them who he was. I'd listened to Queen on Base and when we were Posted to Iraq, Afghanistan and a lot of other places all the time. Mr Deacon invited us for a pint at his local pub, which I said yes to, as fast as giving an order on Parade or when under fire. So there I was having a beer with a Legend, Queen's Bassist, talking about all the times I had seen Queen live, starting as far back as 1977 when I was 13, and also that my wife and I had "You're My Best Friend" as our song at our wedding (which he wrote). I told him the impact that hearing Queen at Live Aid had on the refugee's who could hear it at the camp in Ethiopia in 1985. And how It was Queen that actually got some of the children dancing, how they pulled some of us up and ended up dancing with them, and after that moment the children and some of the women started to trust us. The fact that we were able to build on that basis, and in other Country's being able to use music as a way to break down barriers that people who had suffered so much naturally build. Then my colleagues decided to tell him that I had a habit of singing Queen and songs from other bands like the Electric Light Orchestra, Earth Wind and Fire, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy and so on when we were in combat, and how it would help calm the younger Trooper's and soldiers. I just wanted to become invisible at that moment, but he asked me what I sang, so I ran of quite a long list, he said I had good taste. After a couple of pints we went on our way, I had the autograph for my wife. He was a humble and incredibly nice man, and I have such a great memory in meeting one of my hero's. However, as soon as we were out of sight, my colleagues ran for their lives.

But Freddie won me over, along with the whole room of musicians that was watching with me. His command of the stage is just stunning. Mother Love is the last song, recorded in May 1991. He couldn't finish the last verse due to being too ill so Brian sung the last verse when they revisited after Freddie died in November 24th 1991.

To do all those songs within their allotted time of 18-20min was also a huge feat of precision timing and perfect arrangement. I read that Freddie felt they were being left behind when pop music came in, and Imo, they gave everyone a reason to remember why there so great. They loved performing live and were used to large arenas and commanding a large audience with participation. They also had great roadies and were in perfect tune with each other; back up support from the others when one needed it (without anyone noticing unless looking for it). Finally, all members were classically trained and knew their instruments inside and out; Freddie knew how much he could push his voice and when he needed to change it up to give it a break. All of that and more is what made them a well oiled machine, a team, a band... and friends forever If you want a great play by play of the performance broken down technically, Fil from Wings of Pegasus has a great video. It's lengthy, but worth every second. He points out even more reasons that this great performance blows your mind!!

Like someone else said below, the timeline for the movie is different from the real life one. It wasn't until way after this he found out he had AIDS or contracted it. Still even until he passed away, he sang and made music. Mother Love was his final song, he sung the first half and Brian May sung the second half after Freddy passed away. They didn't come back to that song for a little bit. Freddy passed away in November of 91 if I'm correct. But Queen has a catalog you would not believe. Stevie you have to listen to it, I think all Queen fans will tell you, you will love it! This is dope your doing this. Your girl will love this too. Enjoy the ride if you go back and listen.

I was a MAJOR Queen fan back in the day, and I remember when I first heard Freddie had died. It was ALMOST like I had lost a family member. It was just SO horribly sad -- He was so young, and had so much talent. I miss the music they could no longer make. I bought the last album Freddie participated in: "Innuendo". That album was just amazing. Freddie was so sick when they were recording it. Everyone feared they wouldn't be able to finish the album, but they DID. You can pick almost any song from that album and appreciate each one. My favorites were "Don't Try So Hard" and "My Bijou" (Brian May's guitar work was awe-inspiring).

Freddie didn't know the was HIV positive at this point. The timeline of the movie is not correct, because things were changed because it was a movie. This is a great show anyway, so it is worth your time watching it. Freddie did care, he cared about putting on the best possible performance every time he was on stage and the rest of the band also felt the same. Queen was/is always there for the audience and their concerts are absolutely amazing in both music and spectacle. Freddie was so brave, he worked right up to the end. He is a legend both living and dead, and always will be. Freddie thought that having 4 extra teeth had something to do with his voice but in fact that is not true, removing his four extra incisors would not have changed anything. You are cheating if you did not watch all of this concert because in order to appreciate Freddie, you really need to appreciate the amazing band that he was a part of. Crazy Little Thing Called Love was Freddie's tribute to Elvis who Freddie highly admired. This was not Queen's largest crowd by any stretch of the imagination. In Rio, Queen had crowds of 300,000 each night and huge crowds in Japan as well. Even their concert in Hyde Park had a larger attendance than this one which had somewhere between 72-80 thousand but was broadcast around the world .

As far as Freddies voice, they did studies on his vibrato (the vibrations/little wiggles in his voice when holding a note) and it was like way above the highest range. If you isolate his voice the microinflections and little nuances are simply brutally amazing. He could have easily been an opera singer.

He was a dream artist. He worked until he died no matter how weak, he loved his music so much. I always cry at his live aid performance because the circumstances. As a mom I felt like he was saying goodbye to his momma. Amazing

Some parts of the movie was made up. During the Live Aid performance, Freddie Mercury didn't know he had AIDS. It's not known when he got his diagnosis. Also, the band wasn't beefing when he went solo

Freddie was truly , in every sense of the word "True to himself" He was not afraid to be absolutely what he was born to be , and to hell with conventional thought, and naysayers. He and Queen became utter Legends in spite of, or because of this. Whose to say. But you know something .. That is the definitive definition of Genius. I heard another famous musician say once, " There are only so many things you can sing about in a song. Love , Life, politics, fear, pain , and joy. There are only so many ways you can say these things. A popular musician learns to say it in a different way that no one else has before , but a Legend says it in his or her own way that no one else EVER COULD "! Freddie was a Genius , because no one can do what he did , the way he did , and as well as he did . RIP Freddie , there will no doubt Never be anyone like you again.
